A packed gym with 500 strong is better than 2000 in a half full arena.  We've all heard that before.  It's true, expansion is not always the best thing to do, making the small number of people that are there more comfortable is probably more important.

Mr. Ypsi

Would the 1500 who couldn't get in to the packed gym agree with you?  ;)

Of course not, that's why most of the time new arenas are built with more seating, or old ones are expanded to seat more people.  Nobody wants to keep paying customers out.  I'm just saying that the atmosphere is better sometimes with less people......try to convince that to an athletic director trying to make ends meet.

playdefense,
in response to your question about WIAC assistant credentials.... What about Koelbl?  Don't forget he recruited all the Point players.  That list of Oshkosh recruits, while nice, didn't bring them back to back national titles and all those conference rings.

Also, I can't post about WIAC assistant on this board without mentioning Jeff Berkoff at RF.  Got to be hard to recruit players to that school with facilities and location a factor.  But they are competitive along with winning a conference title two years ago.

The thing with Koelbl is he helped recruit but never had to coach.  There is no doubt the man can recruit talent but without having a jack bennett around to help that talent succeed things have lacked in La Crosse.  I sure hope that this is the year it turns around.  It sure looks like it will in La Crosse and us old balls(senior this year with a nice half year next year left) can finally watch a winning, competitive team.........It should be nice for a change

QuoteI'm sure the lack of a great facility like Quandt Fieldhouse in Point or the Kolf at UW-Osh has something to do with missing out on some recruits.

To be honest, even the Kolf Center needs a new face lift. Man..does that building look old already.

The Kolf is a dump.  It's like playing in a barn.  They don't even fill it half full so you can actually hear echoes during competitions.  It's an ugly building too.

Knoebel never had to "coach" at Stevens Point.  No offense intended Eagle but that's one of the stupidist things I've seen you type.

Sure, Jack did it all by his lonesome self.  Ken didn't have anything to do with it other than find the studs.  You obviously understand nothing about how a college staff functions?  Knoebel did a hell of a lot of coaching at Stevens Point.

Of course it wasn't club ball so.....

Yeah you are right.  That did come off bad and I didn't mean it to say that he didn't coach but he had a man ahead of him that was running the reins.  A luxury not had in Lacrosse, and so far he hasn't been successful from a winning standpoint.  I will be surprised if that doesn't change this year.  Totally didn't come out the way I meant on that and it does sound pretty stupid!

Mr. Downtown

In response when Kolf was built, I have no clue. I thought I heard that it was built in the 70's though. So its really not that old of a building. Though, right now they are redoing the sidewalks in front of the building, and apparently they are repainting some of it as well.

Now...yes we hear it all the time Oshkosh doesn't fill the place up. But when they do (and it is very few), the place rocks more then anywhere in the WIAC. Best example was the regular season finale against Point. There was barely an empty seat in the house. And I know...at least 1,000 of them were Pointer fans...but hey, at least in Kolf you have somewhere to sit as a fan of the opposition. Unlike some other schools...which is a pity. And is pure ignorance to say that "well they don't build an arena for opposition fans, they are only build it for there home fans!". Seriously, if anyone thinks that, then don't bother going on the road, wherever in the state to root for your team. Because you are just taking a home fan's seat that they built that arena for.

Quandt is a pretty cool place i think Titan 2000, but where the girls play is a dump.

Also, speaking of expanding...perhaps Whitewater should think about that. They have a very good home fan base and probably could use a couple of extra hundred seats to make it feel more "roomy".

Anyways, its all in our very humble opinion where is a cool place to see a game. Some say that Lambeau is the best place to see Football game...and having the chance to go to other stadiums...I can say i would rather go to Miller Park then Lambeau.

And also, you are guys are always welcome to visit Kolf...we have more then enough seats to share :)

Kolf was built in 1971 and the football stadium was built in 1970.

badgerwarhawk

The Kolf was state of the art....35 years ago.  But new sidewalks and paint ought bring it right back up to today's standards.  8)

When you travel to Oshkosh and take a game in at the Kolf the only thing you're doing is filling what would otherwise be an empty seat.   With one of the largest student bodies in the league and the largest market population to draw from the attendance at Oshkosh is pathetic.

But I anticipate it will improve this year as every bandwagoner in the Fox Valley hops aboard.

Without a doubt the worst gym in the league is UWRF, its an average at best high school gym

Kolf would be okay, but its actually too big.  They never fill it.

I like Zorn and Quandt

wischoops12

Berkhof has done a solid job, the biggest problem with UWRF is its a communter school with no solid identity.

Winneconne_Legend

RF is a tough place to bring guys into, no doubt, but Berkhof and Bowen have taken players that haven't been top tier guys coming out of high school (ie Kent Becker, Eric Kossoris, Ed Johnson...etc)  turned them into some pretty solid players. Yes, recruiting at times is an issue, but until a new gym and better facilities get built it will be tough to recruit there.

Mr. Downtown

To be honest BadgerWarhawk, we could be like Whitewater and play at Albee Hall that only seats about 1,000  :o

I guess beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. I think Kolf is hands down the best basketball venue in the conf..
