Greek Tragedy

After a 4-0 night including a very impressive win by Platteville (WIAC preseason #7) at North Central (CCIW preseaon #1), the WIAC improves to 30-8.

Badgerwarhawk had the WIAC at 31-8 before yesterday's games, so one or both of us is wrong.

Eau Claire 4-0: starts season off with win over St. Thomas
Whitewater 4-0: wins their one true nonconference road game
Platteville 5-1: huge road win at NCC
La Crosse 4-1: forgot to show up against Luther
Stout 4-1: surpasses win total of each of the last 2 years.
River Falls 4-1: opening win over St. Thomas
Point 3-2: 3-0 after 0-2 start
Oshkosh 2-2: tough road continues with Augustana tonight

I don't know about the rest of the WIAC W-L record, but it appears you're padding your numbers at St. Thomas's expense.  Only River Falls played and beat the Tommies.  ::) ;)

Also, in an earlier post, Fred Falcon, mentioned that Viterbo beat Bethel.   That happens to be Bethel COLLEGE of Indiana, not Bethel University of Arden Hills, MN & the MIAC.  ;)

You're welcome.

Nice win Platteville.  Some NCC supporters are calling it a trap game and one has gone as far as to say most in the gym recognize NCC was the more talented team.  I guess just not last night.  Of course most in the gym are NCC supporters so I guess that doesn't surprise me.  NCC fans are very high on their team this year and if that is the case taking them to the woodshed like the Pioneers did last night is a statement win.

Beloit: 70
WARHAWKS: 82

Behind three point baskets by Zach Knoblouch and Chris Jones and a layup by Scotty Tyler the WARHAWKS jumped to a 12-2 lead in the game's first two and half minutes.  However Beloit responded and reduced the lead to single digits, pulling as close as four, over the next seven or eight minutes until a layup by Jones extended it to eleven and it stayed in the 8-12 point range until three and half minutes remained and Beloit got within three points and stayed close until the half finished with the WARHAWKS up six 36-30.  Jones's 11 points and Andre Brown's 7 led the WARHAWKS while Drew Bryson pulled down 7 rebounds and had 3 assists.  Ex-Clinton HS star Cody Risseeuw led Beloit and all scorers with 14 points.  The WARHAWKS struggled to put Beloit away until late in the second stanza.  For the first seven minutes the WARHAWKS lead ranged from 3 to 8 points.  After that each time the WARHAWKS lead reached double figures Beloit would reduce it getting as close as four, 66-62, with just under four minutes to play.  At that point the WARHAWKS sank six consecutive free throws to go back on top by ten and Beloit would get no closer than eight the rest of the way.  The WARHAWKS finished 10-10 from the free throw line in the final three minutes to seal the deal.  Free throws were critical as Beloit's 22 fouls resulted in 23 free throws of which 16 were successful while the WARHAWKS 13 fouls only put Beloit on the line 5 times.

Chris Jones: 24 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal
Andre Brown: 15 points (10-12 from the line), 3 rebounds
Scotty Tyler: 14 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist , 5 blocks
Zach Knobloch: 11 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists
Drew Bryson: 7 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals...held Risseeuw to just 4 points in the second half
Team: 50% from the floor (43% three points)

You're right Greek.  I was interrupted when I was doing it and I must have counted some date more than once.  Me and math aren't the best of friends.  Once I run out of fingers and toes I'm screwed.

Thanks. Too many Saints. Obviously should be St. Norbert. And I'm not padding stats, I'm short-changing them. St. Norbert was ranked higher!  ;D  :P

Umm. Whats the bigger shock? Platteville over NCC or winless Luther over undefeated La Crosse?

It's proper and important that you make that distinction, Drake. But it should be noted for the record that, with all due respect to your MIAC and to the fans of the Royals, beating Bethel (IN) is more impressive than beating Bethel (MN). The scholarship-bearing Pilots have won three NAIA national championships over the past quarter-century, play in one of the best NAIA leagues in the country (the Crossroads League), and are coming off of 24-10, 27-7, and 28-8 seasons. This year the Pilots are 8-2, with one of those two losses being to Viterbo.

If the two Bethels were ever to play each other, I'd take the Pilots over the Royals any day of the week and twice on Sunday (although I doubt that they'd ever play each other on a Sunday ;)).

Well, they're both pretty high voltage, as far as college basketball shockers go. But the UWP win over NCC is more shocking, simply because the Pioneers not only won the game in North Central's airplane hangar, they held a formidable Cardinals offense that includes two preseason All-Americans to almost half of their season scoring average. NCC was averaging 79.3 ppg going into last night's contest, and UWP held the Cardinals to a mere 40. And, remember, this is a UWP team that was beaten by Wheaton, one of the most lightly-regarded teams in the CCIW, just seven days prior.

The Luther win over UWL, as impressive an upset as it was, was much more conventional. The Norse controlled the entire second half, but they never really pulled away until the final minute. The Eagles were down by seven going into that final minute, which is still a puncher's chance in terms of a game being competitive.

...

Thanks for pointing that out, and I stand/sit corrected as well.   ;)  I'm a little concerned about MN Bethel and watched a portion of their stinko game against Heidelberg, & the narrow escape against Luther. They may yet break UST's stranglehold on the MIAC regular season title, but I've not been overly impressed thus far.

Viterbo has been a poor, to middling NAIA team the past 8-10 years, and has occasionally sneaked out a win or two over the bottom half of the IIAC, MIAC, & WIAC schools.  After looking at their recent history, they do appear to be heading in a positive direction – notwithstanding the butt kicking by River Falls.

However, I've seen both River Falls & Eau Claire play several times in the past year, and I think they'll both have a strong say in who wins the WIAC this year.

Your guess is as good as mine Fred.  He's a nice addition for us.

In the blustery world of message boards, I find your understated style to be effective and refreshing BW. Yes, Chris Jones is a nice addition.  ;)

Well, Oshkosh was either tied or within one with less than 5 minutes to go, but couldn't pull out the win.

The WIAC is now 30-9. 7 more games involving WIAC teams this weekend with La Crosse at Albion and Eau Claire's potential Saturday date with Washington U probably the toughest of them.

That would be La Crosse at Hope and one could argue that to be the toughest matchup - my Hope bias obvious

Yeah. Thanks. Not sure how I missed that game on the schedule. My apologies...and yeah, that's a huge game.

That sounds like Anna Maria, in New England.  They are the Amcats and have some sort of feline mascot, but originally it was an acronym for the extremely original "Anna Maria College Athletic TeamS."
