What's up with La Crosse?  I'm confused.

What do you mean?

La Crosse tops Albion 64-61. Schradle with a double-double.

Maybe it's being on the road, but I feel like that was way too close, especially after the loss to Luther.

Eau Claire scored 120 while Rhodes was in the 90 range.  Maybe Rhodes is playing the system now too?

Rhodes gives up 100+ a game. Some of us fantasy leaguers had at least 1 Eau Claire player on our team.

Nice story about a former Pointer by the name of Terry Porter, who is now coaching hoops at the University of Portland, his first coaching stint at the collegiate level.
TP reminisces about his years in Point... A class act, and a great player he was...

Albion actually isn't a bad team, their whole front-line is brand new and they've really been up and down so far and that will continue for most of the year probably.  Even when not full Kresge Gymnasium is still a tough place to go and get a win, especially when things get a bit tight like they sort of did down the stretch.

Lax was ahead by 7 or 8 the final 5 minutes, Albion scored two three's to 1 FT in the final 20 seconds to make it close, there was never really any danger of losing for LaCrosse.  They had the game under control the last 5, despite missing 4 ft's in the final minute.

I know Eau Claire is good but 41 assists!

Rhodes is like Grinnell lite.

This last game produced a box score that makes that look possible.  I'll have to make some inquiries - we've got a "System" update on tap for ATN in the Spring.  It would be nice to have more perspectives available.

I am one of the few posters, perhaps the only one, who remembers seeing Terry Porter play for Point. He was a great player and at one time was an assistant coach for the Timberwolves.

Here is a first-hand account of the Eau Claire 120-94 victory over Rhodes last night at Wash-U's Lopata Classic...

Rhodes uses a system where 5 new players enter the game at each dead-ball whistle.  It also tries to use a full-time, full-court press and wants to shoot 3s in the half-court offense sooner rather than later.  Unfortunately, it ran into an EC team that has veteran players, is quicker than Rhodes on defense, and had a great game plan drawn up by the coaching staff.

Net result...EC dissected and broke the press easily nearly every time, resulting in countless 3-on-2, 3-on-1, and 2-on-1 mini breaks from mid-court.  Using long pinpoint passes to players on each wing, EC was able to get lay-ups and dunks with regularity.  Rhodes was not quick enough to retreat to protect its basket once the press was broken.  EC was also quick on defense to get back before Rhodes could attack.

EC broke 3 Lopata Classic records--120 points, 53 field goals, 41 assists that had stood since Babson's appearance in '97 and Colby's appearance in '98.  EC shot 73% from the floor (53-73) and was 51-67 inside the arc (76%)...and outscored Rhodes 96-44 in the paint and 42-5 in fast-break opportunities.  96 of the 120 points were scored in the paint.  Rhodes shot a shade under 40% overall, 29% from 3pt range (12-41) and committed 21 turnovers.

In Rhodes' defense, it probably takes a full season to get the wrinkles smoothed out of employing an uptempo system, and head coach Mike DeGeorge hinted to that during a banquet Thursday night--calling it a work in progress.  The Lynx unfortunately had to confront a team that has few fundamental flaws...and whatever flaws it has, EC didn't show them last night.

Tonight's Lopata Classic championship game should be a dandy between #21 Eau Claire and #9 Wash-U.  The Bears have won 35 straight Lopata tournament games dating back to 1998, but they will have their hands full tonight.  Tip-off at 8 PM CST at washubears.com.

I'm in my 40s and I remember Terry Porter. I grew up watching him as my dad was employed at UWSP for over 35 years. Great times back then. I even remember going to some social at Sentry when he got drafted by the Trailblazers.
