And to your point that extra practices don't help, I can point you to plenty of basketball coaches who will laugh at the notion it doesn't help. It is also a tent poll with this division and presidents who believe that the student-athletes should be students first.

UWSP Men's basketball team GPA for 2014-15 was 3.48.

Caden Untiedt was recognized with the Elite 89 award at the Final Four for having the highest GPA among all of the student-athletes in Salem.

How did they have time to study, what with all of those extra practices?!

Your snark aside, lots of student-athletes have told us they do better in-season because their athletic participation forces them to manage their time better.

Last summer, UWEC's AD, Dan Schumacher, said in an interview with the local paper (EC Leader-Telegram) that only student broadcasters would be calling Blugold games from now on, citing he's there to educate individuals, and they are in college to get the experience that will prepare them for the workforce. He says the numbers of students at the college tv/radio stations has increased, and they are put in a competitive situation of having to try out for the broadcasting/announcing spots...

Thus, the longtime VOICE of the Blugolds, Mike Sullivan, who's been doing the commercial broadcasts of Blugold athletic events since the mid-70s, is no longer heard on the airwaves, except for high school games. That's sad, because this wonderful thing called the Internet makes it so you no longer have to be within the radio signal range to get UWEC games...

Needless to say, I did not listen to a Blugold football game last season, nor any M/W hoops this season so far. Sorry to admit it, but with the way football team has fared over the last decade (and M hoops, since Ken Anderson left), I don't want to hear the college kids learning their craft when the Golds are getting beaten yet again...

I'd rather listen to Sully, who at least can kept things interesting with his fountain of WIAC/Blugold knowledge and history. He's funny, professional, and a great guy. Bleeds blue and gold. Sad to see they let a legend, and Wisconsin HOF broadcaster, go.

OK. That's my rant for the night...  ;)

From what I understand, the concern from the Presidents is not so much about academic results, but how much time is devoted to athletics.  Really, they're looking for minimal required time focusing on sports - and are generally willing to sacrifice athletics results in favor of keeping athletes mostly students.  That's the "d3 philosophy" so many tout.

They were all fisheries management, forest recreation and paper manufacturing majors?

Just kidding, just kidding...those might be tough majors...I may have been a forest recreation major had I known that was something that could be studied.

I don't think the dude broadcasting the WARHAWKS/BluGolds women's game here was a student.  At least he didn't look that young.

After the game and when I noticed that he had finished I asked him if he had any idea why Erin O'Toole had decided not to play this season.  He had no idea who Erin O'Toole was and I had to explain to him that she was a BluGold and the conference's POY last year.

They and the rest of the Division have already voted down the idea of Division IV (twice?) and they aren't going to get money from the state to go DII (scholarships and all)... why would it even be a consideration? It isn't like they don't know the boat they are in.

The issue wasn't that UWEC wanted to let him go, it's that the radio group to which he was contracted would not allow him to call games on the UWEC-owned radio station. The university then went out and hired another professional broadcaster to mentor the students (probably who badgerwarhawk saw?) for the season.

My understanding is that Mike Sullivan's radio group has relented and will allow him to call games and he should be back on the air for football season.

This circles back to several weeks ago pertaining to UWSP and whether their post-season ban would affect if they are considered by the committee for regional rankings... and furthermore how they affect other teams.

I need (to) double-check (with the NCAA office) and as I expected, UWSP will be considered when it comes to regional rankings and thus they will have an affect on other teams. So they could be ranked, if worthy, and their games, WL%, SOS, and other items will be considered for themselves and for their opponents.

This will mean that IF UWSP were to "get to the table" at at-large selection time, they would simply be skipped over and the next team behind them will take their place. Big if, but I know people would wonder how that is handled.

You've come to the right board, D-Mac:

Yeah... was typing too fast while trying to multitask items with Thursday's marathon show and didn't "double-check" what I wrote. SMH I went back to edit and included the words I should have included the first time.

And as a Chicago Bears fan since I was a kid... no need to use Aaron Rodgers signage with me... I may just punch a computer screen. ROFL
