Boy, this took a long time to get to this point. In addition, other various penalties including loss of practice days and four years' worth of official visits.

I know there has been a myriad of speculation for the last two+ years on this...

Ultimately, what is a "Show of Cause?" And what does the two-year (vs. three year for Montgomery) look like?

Way I understand it...

If Montgomery elected to try to get another job, the new employer would need to show cause to the NCAA of why they should allow them to hire Montgomery for the next 3 years.  2 years for Semling.  Also, I would assume that both of their current employers will need to show why they would keep them on in their current capacity to the NCAA.  I could be wrong on that though.

That is it basically ... but if they are employing them, what they are going to do to oversee the employee to keep the infractions and others from happening under their watch. They report back to the Committee of Infractions (COI) with details on how they are overseeing the individual - to the nth degree.

It's essentially a suspension (like a player being suspended for a number of games) with the allowance that someone can employee the individual ... as long as they go through a number of hoops to be sure everyone and everything is in compliance.

It can be a very serious headache and time exhaustive process.

1) The story has been edited. When I originally read the story, that information was not added. There's no indication on the headline on the main page that the story has updated. Plus, Dave already linked to the story.
2) The news article includes video from the press conference, which is in addition to the d3sports.com coverage.

The basic "show cause" language is that if another NCAA institution hired them during the show cause period AND the new school did not want to implement the penalties they suffered because of this infraction, the school would have to "show cause" for not implementing those penalties.

There's still paperwork that comes along with employing one of them, even if the new school accepts the penalties, plus the added reputation hit that goes along with it.

I think it will be interesting to see what the relationship is between Stevens Point and Semling after the season ends.

Greek Tragedy

Not a big issue now, but I would guess Point would be ahead of Whitewater with a better SOS and also the fact they beat the Warhawks. Whitewater's loss on Monday isn't taken into consideration for today's rankings.

Gotcha. By the time you made your post, the update had long since happened. As in once we could get someone from UWSP on the phone.

Greek Tragedy

Oshkosh heads to Platteville. The Titans are rolling. Platteville is Jekyll and Hyde. Which team will show up tonight?

Whitewater hosts Point in the biggest rivalry in recent times. Whitewater trying to salvage another poor WIAC season. Point trying to salvage a potential Pool C bid.

La Crosse traveling to River Falls hoping to rebound from a shock loss to Platteville at home. The Falcons trying to catch Whitewater.

Stout welcomes Eau Claire hoping to get their 1st conference win. Eau Claire only a game back of Platteville and Point for 3rd.

This Oshkosh team is deep and balanced. Any of four or five different players can step up when needed. And they have versatility to play big or small. They have been a joy to watch this season. Very difficult to go through the WIAC undefeated. I'm worried this could be a trap game with Point and LAX on the horizon.

Greek Tragedy

Hardly a trap game. The Pioneers have already beaten Stevens Point and La Crosse.
