Couldn't tell whether Flynn traveled cuz of the camera angle, but considering the guy announcer's protestations to the contrary I think he probably did travel. The guy announcer, as has been noted, knew nothing about bb. I don't think he is somebody in training. The gal announcer knew more than he did, but that's setting a low bar. However, they are kids, looking a lot like high school age to me, so I can only wish they knew more, had at least played h.s. ball. If only they would stay away from trying to analyze. The guy kept saying he was out of words to describe how bad he thought the officiating was. If only he would have quit saying that after one time. Still, they were better than having no announcers.

I kept realizing how much the Titans have coming back next year:  Flynn, Fravert, Duax, Peterson (only a freshman) plus others who may not have had much impact last night. Factor in that Boots had a sub par game and they still won and you see the Titans will be tough again next year.

Student announcers! Give them a break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was amazed how UWO almost blew the game at the end!  Turnovers, bad fouls, etc! Did you guys think Flynn traveled on the Dunk?

There is a difference between learning the craft and understanding it's an NCAA broadcast.  Someone failed to inform them they can't call these games like they do during the regular season.  Student announcers are students, but by their fourth game (remember they had the women opening weekend), there should've been some changes made.  You live and you learn - taking criticism is certainly part of that.

Maybe the duo was informed but chose to ignore.  It is not like the plug will be pulled on the broadcast.

Ok, Ok, we get it. We don't have experts like the CCIW.

Exactly who are you going to upgrade your broadcast team to? Maybe they need to be told to "be better"? I'm fine with nearly all D3 broadcasts throwing production to students. Video was great

Where is the CCIW reference coming from? Ryan certainly isn't coming from that angle.

I actually consult and oversee productions at the college level and I encourage students being trained and given opportunities to do this work. Heck, I was the only non-student on the entire team of 20+ at Stevenson who ran the productions (unfortunately, students were not given the opportunity to be the voices). That wasn't the only program I have overseen, consulted, trained, etc. You give them a chance to learn, fail, and learn again. You treat it like a real-world job and in my experience they thrive with it.

That said, you also hold them to certain expectations. I appreciated many aspects of the Titan broadcasts, but some aspects could use some better training - IMO. That included the broadcasters. They tend to go with what they think is what broadcasters do - rail on officials, though I would argue probably not with a true understanding of the rules.

At the same time, there are specific things written in the NCAA handbooks about these opportunities and that info is supposed to be passed on to anyone calling the games. I have been in the student's shoes in my early PA announcing days. I was told if there was anything I shouldn't or couldn't do and what I could do. That's how I learned.

Not bashing officials is one of the top things the NCAA mentions - for good reason. Sadly, that message may not have gotten to the broadcasters. Hopefully this is an opportunity for them to learn from it. That is all I hope for in this case. Unfortunately, those kinds of comments resulted in some muting the broadcast - that may have taken away from what might have been a good job otherwise by the team.

Again - I am thrilled when students get the chance to call these games. However, that doesn't mean you don't hold them to a certain level and expectation. Let's not conflate the two.

And schools don't have to necessarily "upgrade" their broadcast teams, but they do need to monitor and help educate their student teams. That's all many would hope for.

I got the Guiford info from Titan TV! H!ey Titan TV you did a great job on both games

I agree. Great job!

Yikes!!! The guy and the girl????  You guys ara too kind to your locals. The guys that did the Augie Wheaton game were outstanding.  I had to turn the audio of the Oshkosh game off....just my humble opinion.

Ok, it wasn't Ryan. But, that was the last of too many posts criticizing the student announcers. We get it. They were bad. I was just trying to support their efforts. They probably did better than I ever could.

I will follow up that there was a "professional" I listened to at another sectional (or was it a regional) who wasn't that prepared and clearly came in with assumptions and expectations that were not accurate. He didn't do a great job, either. Wishing there be better efforts isn't exclusive to students.

I believe the reserved section near the court is the school allotment - not all of those are sold out, presumably, but you'd need to contact one of the four schools to get them.  Reserved seats in the second section back are and have been on sale through ticketmaster.  General admission on the other side of the court.

The Hamilton guy? He was at least offbeat and entertaining, even though he did drive his material into the ground (I wish that I had a nickel for every time that he mentioned that Whitman coach Eric Bridgeland had told him that Austin Butler was a "wrecking ball") and his delivery was eccentric enough to be a bit of a distraction at first.

Augustana came off very well in the broadcasting department this weekend, because Chris Ford and Dan Sand, who are Augie's regular broadcasting team, are the gold standard of all of the two-man booths I've heard in D3. And it's not just that, unlike the other sectionals broadcasters, they had the benefit of seeing two teams from their league to aid in their familiarity with what they were calling. They clearly did their homework on Marietta and Oswego State, too. And in-game analysis is their forte, and that's something that isn't necessarily influenced by game prep.

I turned down the sound on the UW-Oshkosh sectional games. After a few minutes of listening to St. Thomas vs. Guilford on Friday night, I knew that I wouldn't be missing anything if I muted that sectional for the weekend.

UWO Titan 78

It was really nice to see the fan support for the Titans at Kolf this weekend. I don't ever remember seeing the place that crowded for a school athletic event. We used to sell out the place when the WWE used to come (us football players got to escort the wrestlers from the locker room to the ring), but I've talked on the football boards how we don't often get fan attendance commensurate with the product on the field/court. The games looked better attended on TV than the figures indicate. Hail Titans!

We talked about tickets and all things "Fort Wayne" on Thursday's Hoopsville. It would be worth listening to our chat with Nathan Dennison: www.d3hoops.com/hoopsville/archives/2018-19/mar7
