We talked about tickets and all things "Fort Wayne" on Thursday's Hoopsville. It would be worth listening to our chat with Nathan Dennison: www.d3hoops.com/hoopsville/archives/2018-19/mar7

Thanks, Dave. I really don't have two hours to listen to the whole show, so when does the Fort Wayne-specific part start?

It's easy to go to the page, click on the video and scrub through it. Looks like about the 57-minute mark.

I got the Guiford info from Titan TV! H!ey Titan TV you did a great job on both games

I agree. Great job!

Yikes!!! The guy and the girl????  You guys ara too kind to your locals. The guys that did the Augie Wheaton game were outstanding.  I had to turn the audio of the Oshkosh game off....just my humble opinion.

Me too. They were awful. The announcers they had for when UWSP played at UWO during the WIAC tournament (not sure if it was the same duo or not) were brutal too.

They were the same and I have to agree though I'd probably tone down the "brutal" thing a tad.  After all they're broadcasters in training.  They definitely could have been more prepared for the first game.
Was it me or were there no live stats last night?

The comment she made about the NAIA changing into NCAA DIII had me checking to see if I missed something important today.
I heard that too ... she had no idea that NAIA still exists and has its own championships.

Oshkosh Fans: How are you going to Guard the one man team Francis? Look forward to seeing you guys on Friday!

There was a time in the past when all of the WIAC was NAIA.  I don't remember exactly when it was (maybe sometime in the mid to late 70's) when the league transitioned to the NCAA DIII.

All of the WIAC schools were out of NAIA by 1993.

Ken Anderson's great UWEC teams were a regular presence in the NAIA tourney right up till they were the last of the WSUC teams to switch to D3 in 94. Never won it though. Those Dick Bennett UWSP teams in early-mid 80s were never better than runner-up too if I remember right.

I may be wrong, but I think UWSP went to D3 after the 1997 season.

I always wondered what "hold" the NAIA had on so many schools for so long.  Can any one share some historical perspective?  I know Illinois Wesleyan's former coach had a role in founding the NAIA tourney, so a sense of loyalty played a part in their sticking with the NAIA longer than most others in the CCIW.  I wonder about other schools, including those in the WSUC/WIAC

Maybe the NAIA was the big institution back then. I mean, wasn't there a time when the NIT was thee post season tournament, rather than the NCAA tourney?

The attraction of the NAIA was (and continues to be, for many) a freedom from requirements.  They just don't have the lengthy regulations that the NCAA imposes on programs, which makes it easier to administrate and manage.  Often schools with fewer resources find it more comfortable.  Lately, though, I think you've seen a move to the NCAA, because it tends to signify a better educational experience.  I'm connected to a few former NAIA schools who've transitioned recently and those moves were definitely driven by the admissions department and the President's office more than Athletics.

Yes, but the NIT was started independently of the NAIA by a group of influential New Yorkers who wanted to host a big season-end tournament at Madison Square Garden.

I did some half-assed internet research.  The NCAA was founded after Teddy Roosevelt had to intervene over the deaths in college football back in 1906.  It was originally a rules-making body that eventually started offering championships.  It was founded, originally, by some of the larger institutions and athletic programs at the time.

The NAIA come out of a national small-college basketball tournament that James Naismith (if I have to explain who that is on these boards, shame on you) started in Kansas City.  It was originally just a tournament to highlight small college programs (often midwestern) which got overlooked by the east-coast-based media.  It pretty quickly developed into offering other championships and into a larger organization, the NAIA.

I'd imagine, just knowing history, when the NCAA split into divisions in the 70's, it created a place for former NAIA schools to belong on equal footing and the NCAA had been winning that battle for a long time.
