Greek Tragedy

The 2020 National Champions started off on the right foot tonight, as the Pointers topped the visiting Ole's from St. Olaf, 77-59

https://athletics.uwsp.edu/sports/mens-basketball/stats/2019-20/st-olaf-college/boxscore/8923

I watched parts of the game online and there definitely were some bright spots. With about nine minutes to go in the 1st half, it was 19-17. Point then went on a nice run to end the half at 46-29. The hosts were up by as many as 23 early in the second half, but the visitors got no closer than 14 with less than 7 minutes to go.

Four Pointers scored in double figures, Ehrke with 18 pts and 15 rebounds, Bublitz with 17 and 5, along with 5 assists, Mootz off the bench with 16 including 4-4 from downtown, and lastly, Spray with 13 and 6. the Pointers shot 51.8% from the field which included 12-25 from 3. The defense held St. Olaf to 40.7% shooting and 9-27 from 3. A good start for the team picked 4th in the WIAC over the 5th ranked MIAC team in the preseason. Up next is a trip the EdgeDome in Madison vs Edgewood.

UM-Duluth 6'8" transfer to La Crosse, Jimmy Volbrecht, is now no longer listed on their roster.  La Crosse had a lot of turnover from last years' roster.
I'm guessing Volbrecht was the guy rumored to be out for the season due to injury that I posted about before their exhibition game against Wisconsin...

Volbrecht played a few minutes in the exhibition loss to Wisconsin.
Well nevermind then! My bad!

Whoever was keeping live stats in the RF game last night was wildly off the Mark. The Falcons only had three in double figures and Stensgard leading with 23 points.

Whitewater nearly pulls off the big upset over Wash U last night. Hopefully Badger will fill us in, but it was a loss, so he may not.  ??? ::) :P ;D ;)

All the scores from last night's games are gone on the schedule page. Not sure what's up.

I can fill you in.

Kale and Ards are special players.  They were excuting.  Incidentally, Massey listed  the game as an upset by Washington University,  gave the Bears a 37% chance of winning.  30% chance of beating Platteville.

It is a sample size of one game, but I seriously think those two transfers are going to make some noise in the WIAC.  Whitewater needs a bit more from everyone else.

Tough loss of a game that could have been won.  The WARHAWKS build a comfortable lead leading by 15 with just over 2 1/2 minutes before WashU goes on a run cutting the lead in half 41-33 before the half ended.  WashU starts the second half with another run while we turn the ball over the first three times we touch it.  After a couple minutes they lead 43-41.  They keep the lead building it to 13 points with just under three minutes remaining.  We make a run down the stretch and get to within a pair a couple times.  But they make their free throws and hold on.  Despite all that went down we had our chances but just didn't take advantage of enough of them.  Their size was a problem. We struggled to match up with #32 and allowed 14 offensive rebounds resulting in 15 second chance points.

Baily has 25, Ards 24, Brohm10.  Chissom had a nice game with 13 points, 4 rebounds and a pair of blocks and steals

Platteville beats Wash U 76-63 Shields leads the scoring with 29 points.

WARHAWKS beat Viterbo 79-73.  In a script similar to the WashU loss we built a lead, though not as large as before, in the first half and then watch Viterbo erase it and take a 34-32 lead into the locker room.  Unlike the WashU loss however the WARHAWKS start the second half with a 11-2 run and maintain a 2-9 point lead the rest of the way.

Ards finishes with 25 points, 14 rebounds and a pair of assists and steals, Baily with 21 points and 11 assists.   Brahm adds 8 points, 4 rebounds.

Ripon at home on Tuesday.

They shot terribly and were still in it at the end.  Flynn was a monster in foul-limited minutes.
