Oshkosh wins 76-68

Oshkosh hosts Eau Claire on Saturday for the AQ.

I think if EC wins, the WIAC gets three teams in.

If EC wins you have a shot at four.  They had the weakest resume coming into the semis.

They won't need a "weakest" resume, because they'll have the AQ. I don't think La Crosse isn't getting in.

I think Augustana will move ahead of UW-La Crosse (behind Eau Claire).

Platteville got beat by a EC team that came to play. EC got off to a quick start and built-up a 19 point lead in the 1st half. Platteville woke up and got the lead down to 10 points at half. A scary moment 2/3rds of the 1st half Platteville's Justin Stovall went up to block a shot but the EC player decided to go underneath and drive to the basket or draw a foul. Stovall flipped over landing on his tail bone and he hit his head on the floor he laid motionless for what seemed like the longest time then took him to the training room.  They came and got his mother out of the stands to be with him. When she came back she said it was a lower back bruise and he would be sore for a while he came back to the bench in the 2nd half but did not play. Platteville started strong in the 2nd half and overtook EC and built a 7 point lead led by Shields with 31 points and Voelker. With about the 5 minute mark Platteville was in the the bonus and I was hoping they would win down the stretch with free throws but they seemed to slow the game down take time off the clock then drive to the basket and draw a foul. Give EC credit they held their ground blocked shots without fouling and Platteville missed some key free throws. Like I said a couple of days ago it's hard to beat a team in your conference 3 times in a year.

That generalization is simply not true. The WIAC had great balance this season, so this particular league, this particular season, might constitute an exception. But, by and large, the gap between good teams and bad teams is such that the good teams frequently win just as comfortably, if not more so, in a tournament after sweeping the matchup in a double round-robin situation -- making the old saw "it's hard to beat a team three times" a load of hooey, because just how close do you think the bad team is likely to get to the good team the third time around? Familiarity isn't going to resolve that talent gap.

Just look at the #1 vs. #8 tournament games this year in leagues that play a double round-robin schedule and have eight tournament participants. In the NCAC tourney, #1 Wittenberg beat #8 Ohio Wesleyan for the third time this season, this time by a 14-point margin. In the OAC tournament, #1 Mount Union beat #8 Otterbein for the third time this season, this time by an 18-point margin. In the PrAC tourney, #1 Grove City beat Thiel for the third time this season, this time by a 14-point margin.

When you look around the country at the other leagues that employ a double round-robin schedule -- again, the WIAC is not a good example because of its unusual balance this season -- do you really, honestly think that the top team in each league would have trouble beating the bottom team a third time?

Again, #3 La Crosse beat #6 River Falls for the 3rd time this season and #4 Eau Claire beat #5 Stevens Point for a 3rd time this season in the 1st round games.

'95 Blugold

This year's Blugold team has been a very frustrating team to watch. I don't know if I've ever seen a team have such large point swings in a single game as I have this team. I don't know how many solid double digit leads I've watched them build this season in games only to see them evaporate. On the flip side, I've also seen them down double digit only to go on a run and get back in the game. I can see the inconsistency maybe game to game and home-away type situations, but to see it on such a regular basis within each game itself can be very frustrating to watch as a fan.

Interesting both the men's and women's started off against Point in the opening round and both are playing Oshkosh in the finals of this year's WIAC tournament. Hoping for a Blugold sweep come Saturday.

I understand expense part and the your team earned the right to host the WIAC tournament championship game. Has the WIAC ever considered having the championship games  both men and women at a neutral site? This year would have been perfect with the Oshkosh and Eau Claire match ups.  I know at one time years ago the Dane County  Coliseum inquiried but it went no where.  Panther Arena in Milwaukee,  The Resch Center or Brown County Arena in Green Bay, Just a Game Field House in the Dells or the Menominee Nation Arena in Oshkosh are a few places that could host. I think it could be a good way to market the quality of WIAC Basketball and give the fans and players a fun opportunity.  Just a thought.

Oshkosh men complete the WIAC sweep. Blugolds got completely dominated on the boards and once again were generously sending their opponents to the foul line.

Overall not a bad season for them though. Gonna have some holes to fill next year.  Hopefully my hockey squads can come through next weekend.
