Point tops Augustana 79-61 at Quandt yesterday. They were up 14 at the break. I'm pleasantly surprised with this result. Granted Augie isn't what they used to be, predicted 5th in the CCIW. Of course, Point was selected last in the WIAC. So, it's a nice win and they could be few and far between. Point heads to Whitewater on Wednesday before hosting Eau Claire on the weekend.

Safe to say La Crosse has its two biggest home games of the season this week against Platteville and Oshkosh. Huge week for the title race out of gate in December.

Wednesday's slate is interesting and I think we'll find out a lot.

The first week of WIAC games should be interesting #4 Platteville at #8LaX what a first conference game for both teams a repeat of last year's Championship game. #10 Oshkosh  hosts EC which received votes  in the D3hoops.com top 25 poll. Saturday LaX hosts  Oshkosh and Platteville hosts  RF which is off to a 5-2 start. Let the games begin.

Predictions for the Opening Night of the WIAC Season:

Home teams listed first

UWO vs UWEC - UWO

UWW vs UWSP - UWW

UW Stout vs UWRF - UWRF

UWL vs UWP - UWL

'95 Blugold

UW-O with a comfortable 69-60 win over the Blugolds tonight. Blugolds were a turnover machine and had no answer to the Titans in the paint. Difficult game to watch as a Blugold fan.

Pointers: 70 WARHAWKS: 83

The WARHAWKS built a 17 point lead during the first half and led by 13 points, 40-27, when it ended.  Point hit some three pointers early in the second half and cut their deficit to 5 points after the first five minutes but this time the WARHAWKS settled down, started hitting some shots and over the next twelve minutes built the lead to 19, 79-60, before Point closed to the final.  Derek Gray led all scorers with 19.  Gage Malensek (11), Jamer Barker (11) and Trevon Chislom (10) also scored in double figures.  Led by Jack Brahm's 10 the WARHAWKS outrebounded Point 44-25.  Garrett Nelson led Point with 16.

Platteville opens the conference season with a hard fought win at LaCrosse. Game was back and forth for most of the game until the Pioneers started to pull away at the end. Platteville  won the game at the FT line going 17 for 22 while LaCrosse was 6 of 8 but some of the Platteville FT came towards the end when LaCrosse was forced to foul.

Postgame, according to Scott Krueger, Stevens Point radio voice, UW-Stevens Point lost its 25th game when UW-Superior pulled out of a contract and canceled the game. The Yellowjackets and Pointers had played a single game every year since Superior left for the UMAC.

Superior added two nonconference games this year with CSS leaving for the MIAC, but are still playing their cross river rival Saints once this season. Because of this, it's hard to say who replaced the Stevens Point on the Superior schedule. Superior also not playing River Falls this year after playing the last four.

Did they happen to mention why Vander Velden didn't play last night?  Point got pounded on the boards last night.

I did not hear this. But when I miss the radio call live, which I did last night, I only go back to the podcast to listen to pregame, halftime, and postgame. If it was said during the game, I would've missed it.

We had heard that Point had several players missing due to covid protocol.  I never tried to confirm it but they only dressed 9 players and had more listed in the program.

Yikes, horrendous shooting night for the Pointers as they get smoked 72-56.'

Less than 30% from the field including less than 9% from 3. Ugly, ugly, ugly.

If it makes them feel better Oshkosh and La Crosse shot just 31 and 38 percent respectively. It was pretty ugly. La Crosse was also 0-15 from 3 and lost by 3 53-56. Oshkosh was just 6-28 from deep meanwhile. Each team with three double digit scorers.

They'll probably flip places in the poll. It'll be interesting to see how far La Crosse actually falls for losing to two great teams at home in games they were in most of the way.
