stoutguy, et al--too bad I missed the "grammar wars" of a few days ago. Humorous!

And I got "forgiven" by bw, so I'm off his beers due list.

Just got off the Spurs chat line where I asked how Melzer would do this season. One guy answered that he thought Melzer would make the 13th spot on the roster because Melzer is "just the kind of player the Spurs are in dire need of."

What's that mean? Your guess is as good as mine.

Perhaps bw would put a case on Melzer not making it? I'll bet Melzer does make it.

Well, if that isn't the kiss of death for Melzer, I don't know what is!

Fred, haven't you learned not to bet beer with BW?  ???

He never loses when beer is on the line.

Tell you what. If you want Melzer to make the Spurs then bet against
him making it with BW.

It will cost you a case of beer, which apparently BW will forgive, and Melzer makes the team.  ;)

Just think, Fred---regarding that "grammar wars" thing, we used to do that for a living.  No wonder we are so poor that I have to farm beans and you have to run the city.  Why in the world would BW "forgive" your debts?  I imagine he just realized that he could never collect.  Hope your positve spin on Melzer turns out to be true.  He is a great kid and all of us, I think, wish him the best.  Stop in Menomone on Thursday and BDB will buy you a beer.  He sponsors the Gridiron Classic and I plan on hanging around for the games on Thursday.  Maybe he will buy me one too.

Opps, got my quote inside Freds.  See, that's why I am a bean farmer now and not an English teacher.

stoutguy--I faked bw out by SAYING I would pay him back. Then he "forgave" my debt. I've learned a few things in city politics!

bdb--you're probably right, but I'll try anything one more time.

Any movement on getting that main street renamed to BadgerWarhawk Blvd, Fred?  :D

I'm pulling for Melzer to make it.

bw--We'll take it up in planning commission next week. If we get it done, we can have you dedicate it at the end of the season when the Warhawks play football here.

Most of those schools bring along their own icings and little colored sprinkles.   ;)

Ironic you'd say that t2k...  If you look at Oshkosh's record over this period...

2000: UW-Parkside, Marian College, Edgewood College, Simpson College, Southwestern University, McMurry University(L), Mississippi College, College of St. Scholastica (7-1)

2001: UW-Parkside, St. Mary's University, Edgewood College, Marian College, St. Norbert College, Simpson College, Finlandia University, Viterbo University (8-0)

2002: Lawrence University, Marian College, Edgewood College, St. Norbert College, Transylvania University, Hamilton College, Finlandia University, Northland College (8-0)

2003: St. Norbert College, Lawrence University, Edgewood College, Marian College, Luther College, Kendall College, Beloit College, Finlandia University, Barat College (9-0)

2004: St. Norbert College, Lawrence University(L), Luther College, Marian College, Finlandia University, State University of N.Y.-Institute of Technology, UW-Stevens Point(L), Edgewood College(L), Beloit College (6-3)

2005: Edgewood College, Marian College, St. Norbert College, Finlandia University, Lawrence University(L), Carroll College, North Central College(L), Purdue University-North Central, Cardinal Stritch University  (7-2)

So, all together, of 25 different opponents that Oshkosh played during this stretch, Stevens Point played 9 of them (including Marian and Edgewood every year, accounting for 12 of the 51 games.  Oshkosh also played Finlandia and St. Norberts (hardly world beaters).  Trying to look at these objectively really doesn't work... too many different teams with different records, etc, etc.  I guess all we can really do is look at the body of work and compare.

During these  seasons, Oshkosh put together a nice 28 game non-conference, regular season win-streak.  Point strung together 45 straight, including 5 consecutive seasons.  In fact, Point had a 28 game home winning streak that fell this past season too.  That's an entire season's-worth of games.

When it really goes right down to it, though, you can say all you want about Point's non-conference schedule (which, by the way, included Oshkosh... That doesn't look too good when you hate on a team's non-con schedule, and it includes you!  IMHO also, it doesn't appear to be any better, or worse during this time period that Oshkosh's), but you really have to look at what happened AFTER the non-conference games.  In essence, the non-con gets you ready for the big show, which then gets you ready for the BIGGER show.  Point was 73-23 in conference during these 6 seasons, in which they won 5 conference championships, took second once, had four NCAA berths, 3 Elite 8's, and two National Championships.  Show me a team that dominated this time period as much as this, and I'll give them their due... but I really don't think you'll find it.

Nick Bennett joins Crean's staff
Posted: Sept. 8, 2006
Two seasons ago, Nick Bennett scored 27 points in an exhibition game against the Marquette Golden Eagles.

On Friday, the former UW-Stevens Point standout agreed to join the team he once torched. He'll replace the departed Tony Smith as head manager and director of basketball technology.

"Obviously the Bennett family name is not only huge in the state of Wisconsin but throughout the country when it comes to the game of basketball," coach Tom Crean said. "Nick is the next in line in that area."

A 2005 graduate of Stevens Point, Bennett served as a graduate assistant last season for the Pointers. A four-year letter-winner at Stevens Point for his father, Jack, Bennett and was a key part of the Pointers' Division III national championship teams in 2004 and 2005.

He's also the nephew of former Wisconsin and Washington State coach Dick Bennett.

My friend Swampgoon and I were discussing this.  What exactly is "Head Manager" anyway?  Is he in charge of handing out towels, getting water for the players and sitting at the end of the bench with a clipboard and pointing out the new subs that come in?  Or, is he in charge of the guys who do all of this? lol.  ???  :P  ;D  :D

I'm more impressed with his other new title, "Director of Basketball Technology". I picture Nick Bennett with a white lab coat and clipboard in some secluded corner of the Marquette science building, supervising a crack team of scientists that's assembling new contact lenses for the Marquette shooters that come complete with cross-hairs and computer-chip rangefinders. Or maybe he's going to revive Fred MacMurray's old experiments with FlubberTM.

As long as they didn't put him in charge of team defense I think they'll be alright. ;D

Seriously, everyone has to get their foot in the door somehow and this looks like a start.   Best of luck to him.

Thanks for the laugh, Greg.  That one was pretty good.

UWO has added some frontcourt help with the transfer of 6'8" F/C Dane Seckar Anderson.  Seckar-Anderson is transferring from the University of North Dakota where he appeared in 19 games last season.  (I believe the transfer may be a result of the current coach resigning at the end of last season.)

Seckar-Anderson has Oshkosh ties as he was a standout player for Oshkosh West HS from 2002-04.
