You sure Melzer didn't drop 200 and you were one of about 54 to see that game?

You are too funny! That has to be one of the best lines I have heard in a long time. I almost fell out of my chair laughing!  ;)

I was on here last season, prompting the Eagles fans to support both hoops teams, to fill Mitchell Hall, seeings they were having special seasons. Neither program has had much winning success...

But they really haven't ever had much attendance. I can remember being a youngster going through Mitchell Hall on a game day, and thinking it was intramurals going on, the crowds were so sparse...

I don't know why that is, unless perhaps the success of all the other UWL teams - football, track, etc. - over the years has had an effect on the hoops attendance? IE La Crosse is known as a football, track, etc., school, and is expected to win in those areas. But hoops is considered secondary, because they haven't had as much success, and therefore is not worth the time? Not sure...

Not sure the residents of La Crosse are big supporters either? That's surprising, since they had two CBA teams that drew well...

Bullk, I think the CBA teams are part of the trouble.  When they were active, support for UWL hoops dropped to almost nothing in the community.  The growth of the Viterbo men's program might have hurt, too.

I know that I went to almost no UWL basketball games when we had the CBA.  I had a season ticket for the Bobcats (2nd team).

I heard on the football board about Voice.  My thoughts and hopes are with him and all of his people.

Ditto. I'm sorry to hear about this. I miss seeing his posts here.

Wow, I don't know how I missed this!  My thoughts and prayers are with you, voice, and with your family.

Recently, he sent me an email in which he said he thought he would make it and that it was his spot "to lose." He said he had been placed on the five player group with Tim Duncan during practices and that TD was putting in good words for him with Popovich. Evidently they weren't good enough.

Fred,

I know former player Shawn Timm still talks to Rich quite a bit and Rich was quite confident that this was "the year".  I didn't watch the Bulls game, but followed it on nba.com and I couldn't believe the next morning when he got cut.

If you have any updates on his next move, let me know.  I will do likewise.

Pointer's roster is filled with FR and SO and only 5 JR/SR.  A 7'2" FR center? Obviously a project. When's the Purple vs Gold game? Need to see this big guy in action!

Hoops Junkie

What is point going to do with 20 guys on the roster....

It seems that they have added some size...

Any predictions on the league standings..

I'll get it started

1. Stevens Point
2. Whitewater
3. Oshkosh
4. LaCrosse
5. Platteville
6. Stout
7. Eau Claire
8. Superior
9. River Falls

Sorry to say that the top stay good and the bottom stay that way..

Hoops Junkie

I wish Melzer the best in his next step...

I would think if he plays NBDL he would have a shot as a call up.

Money is probably better overseas..

Probably the best WIAC player in at least the last ten years...

Winneconne_Legend

Very Early Predictions...

1. Oshkosh - Talent is very good, chemistry and loss of Bryce Welch make it a tougher pick

2. La Crosse - Best Player, Good Coach, Can backcourt keep up?

3. Stevens Point - 1 Senior, 3 Juniors...any other year and this is a recipe for a .500 season at best...

4. Whitewater - Freund has to improve for WW to have a chance

5. Stout - Could've been #1 if not for the loss of the backcourt

6. Platteville - Flying with Goose Gossens

7. River Falls - I like the new coach, I like the new recruits, I suspect this will be a team that will improve a lot in the 2nd half of the season

8. Eau Claire - What's it going to take to get Gibby out?

9. Superior - Cobb / Hildebrandt and a whole bunch of guys who have no business in the WIAC

I seem to remember that roster changing about 20 times before the actual season started.  ??? (one day is was this, the next day it was that.)  I think it changed even after the purple/gold game.

A couple of interesting tibits.

Jeremy Krull is the brother of Jon Krull.  The younger Krull played at Whitewater two years ago.  I didn't know he transferred.  Guess I missed that.  With the conference rule, he had to sit out a year and is now listed as a junior.  Do you lose a year of eligibility as well?  Two years ago is was a freshman at Whitewater, but if he didn't play last year, could he be a soph. this year?

The brother line continues with Pete Rortvedt's younger sibling, Ross, joining the team.  I'm sure some of the nine freshman will probably "grey" shirt this year.

Brad Kalsow was injured during last weekend's football game.  I was told he was stretchered off.  I hadn't heard if he was thinking about playing basketball this season (he's not on the roster), but the injury might have effected his decision, depending on how bad it was.

Freshman Chris Dorner weighs in at 275 lbs...at 6'6".  That's a big boy! lol.  Ryan Luecht is 7'2", 233.

chmarx -
My post about La Crosse was to suggest that it was a pretty good basketball city, since they drew well for both CBA teams.

You make a good point, though, about how those two teams probably did take away from the fans attending UWL games. It was after reading your post that I remembered that quite often the Catbirds and Bobcats both played on Saturday nights, while UWL was playing... Probably happened during the week, too.

I see Vince "the Prince" Hamilton is still around. He's a former Catbirds player who will again be serving as an assitant coach for the women's team... He was class, and fun to watch...

OS, Jeremy Krull is Jon Krull's twin brother (not identical, obviously!)

Ryne Luecht is a bit of a project... but so were the Nonemachers and Gibson.  These guys all have something that you simply can't get around... I mean, Ryne makes ME feel small...  He's just got to get used to having a body as big as that.

And I don't know 100%, but I'm pretty sure that Brad was not considering basketball this season.

Bulk, I agree that Vince is class.  La Crosse is really more of a baseball town.  We currently have a team for college players that draws very well.

The Catbirds gave away a lot of tickets.  The Bobcats did sell a lot, though.

As far as our team this year, I don't think the question is the backcourt.  Its who will play well up front besides Werner.
