;)Maybe the Vikings will return the favor on the 21st;  I suspect their band is a lot better with all the Music majors at the Conservancy at LU.

I've been told that there is a huge amount of students that signed up for the band this year, and at the Purple/Gold game, the band director was counting spaces on the bleachers.  It looks like the LU fans won't have room to sit behind the band this year, so I guess they'll have to complain about sitting somewhere else! lol  ;)  :P

I thought Marian already built their new gym.

Point has an OK facility except the visiting fans sit behind the band.

I've known of people who carry long-term grudges, T2K, but yours rank right up there with Osama bin Laden's anger over the fact that King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella kicked the Moors out of Spain in 1492.  ::) Are you ever going to give this UWSP seating thing a rest?

I'm not ashamed to admit that I had to Google Croesus.

Marian still has their old gym, that needs to be replaced.  We played in that place over two years ago, and it looked like it was beaten to hell.

I know, my tongue-in-cheek comment was for future reference.

I also did ask you about seat availability as well, which you must have skipped over.

T2K,

I came to Lawrence when the Vikings hosted #2 Oshkosh at the Alex, and there were plenty of seats available.  When is break for Lawrence?  The game is played the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.  I anticipate having no problems getting a seat, would I be correct?  I don't work at night, so I'll make the game, and even if I did have to work, I think I'd feel under the weather that day (hint, hint, PS!)

Eagle,

Against Carroll the BADGERS rebounded a missed free throw with 24 seconds remaining.  You wouldn't believe what they did.  Up by 20 they sat on the ball completely defeating the purpose of playing hard and embarassing Carroll.  It was shameful, I tell ya,  absolutely shameful.  ;);)

I am catching your sarcasm, BW, and I couldn't agree with you more.  I don't have any other insite regarding your original post on this issue, but I thought it was unusual too.

Old School:

I suspect there will be seats.  The temporary bleachers (which added like 300 seats) became more premanent last year as the community has really started to come out more for the LU games.  Mike Woods at the Post Crescent has done a nce job of profiling the team and its coaching staff.  While its nice to write about with a magical season like 2005/06, I suspect he'll find just as many good stories in 2006/07.   Tharp has such a class program and the guys are just top shelf guys.   Over the past several years its been interesting watching the high GPA pre-med, pre-law and biology majors play some pretty good hoop, too.

The place to cure that illness  ;) you spoke of is the Wooden Nickel on College Ave., just west of the LU campus, its definitely the unofficial watering hole of LU Hoops.

Titan2000.  I would love to see your "Private school" guy, Tharp compete in the big bad WIAC.  I think he would be a great addition to an already great bunch of coaches.  Now I am not getting into this private/public discussion.  I had one of my kids go to Bethel (she wasn't allowed to dance), and another kid played football at big, bad public school North Dakota where they used to chant "**** the Bison" whenever they felt like it.  Both my kids survived.

My point was simply that the big, high-profile new gyms such as Hope's and Illinois Wesleyan's are the exception, not the rule. The antiquated facilities at NPU and North Central, or the more recently-built but smallish and cramped gyms such as Eureka's and Dominican's, are much more typical of D3 private-school gyms.
Yep, I agree.  I was just saying that, well, in certain situations (the extreme top end), these tended to be private institutions than public.  I guess I may have over-generalized a bit, but it IS true that the facilities dubbed the *best* are private...  There just may be a gap between the low (majority of private schools with sparse alum/endowment funding), middle (majority of public schools with federal and state funding) and high (a select few private schools with very generous donors and/or large endowments).

Quote
The Ratner Center is another case entirely, as it is the University of Chicago's gym. Like its UAA brethren, the U of C is richer than Croesus and isn't typical of D3 private schools (or D3 in general) in anything.

Ironically, one of the antiquated gyms that we ever played in was at Carnegie Mellon.  I got the same feel as North Central's upper gym... dark, old, not many seats at all, dead spots on the floor, second story gym.  If I remember correctly, there was a stage at one end of the gym.  That seems to me to be the sure sign that your gym might be a bit out of date... I mean, I can understand using areas for multiple purposes, but...

I guess it just shows the difference in emphasis of the athletic programs... though U of C's athletic history is a bit more notable than CMU's, and while we walked around the campus of Carnegie Mellon there really didn't seem to be a ton of room for a new facility...  Interestingly, the next night on our Pittsburgh trip, we went to La Roche College, who had a two year old (in 2002) facility that was quite nice.  It was clear that they had made quite a few renovations/additions to the campus, which included their athletic facilities, which were quite nice.  I don't say this to discount your argument, when you were talking about U of C, I remembered that trip to CMU, as that's the only other UAA school I have been to.  And, like you said, the UAA schools are in a class of their own amongst the rest of D-3.

I hope you didn't think that I was expressing any frustration towards you. Heck, I'm not even frustrated with AndOne; he's a newcomer who isn't aware that this subject has been played out ad nauseam in the WIAC room.

Interestingly, this is quite a different approach of the "public vs private" argument than we've had in the past...  It definately stretched my abilities to defend the publics (at all cost, taking no prisoners... oh wait)

I talked to one of my LU sources today and they are anticipating a HUGE amount of Pointer fans.  With this a very good possibility, I was told they are planning on emptying the gym at half-time and then letting in the rest of the fans.  It's also noted they are charging full price for each half.  Can T2K confirm this?  ;D :D ;) :P

Seriously though, it's disappointing to hear that they are charging this year.  I always liked just walking in for free.  FREE is good.  :-[
