WIAC-NathCon matchup scores:

UW-Whitewater 66, Maranatha 17, partial 2nd half.

UW-Stevens Point 97, Lakeland 59--Final:  Muskies had it down to 9 early in 2nd, but after that, Pointers pulled away and turned it into a rout. You WIAC schools continue to have LMC/NathCon's number. :-X :-X :-X :-X

WHITEWATER...92
Maranatha Baptist...29

Not much to say about it.  It was a mismatch of gigantic proportion.  The starters averaged 9 minutes of playing time.  Eighteen WARHAWKS played and 17 scored.  It broke the record for the fewest points allowed in a game.  The previous record was 35 (CalTech).

Sounds like the way the national championship game is going so far...Florida 34, Buckeyes 14  :o

Pointers had a fairly easy time with Lakeland although there were some moments when you wondered............Scott Hoelzel had a great game and is getting more playing time. He's quite the athlete and will be a star for the Pointers in the future. Lakeland couldn't stay with the Pointers on offense and the defense came out tough in the second half. Point is just so patient and is always looking for a more open shot than the first available. On to Eau Claire Wednesday...can they keep the blowout string going there??

Greek Tragedy

Point smokes Lakeland 97-59 tonight...ok, it's not Whitewater v MBBC!  Oh well! :-)

Point came out hot and led 23-8, but Lakeland showed poise and went on their own 15-5 run to cut it to 28-23.  Point then answered and finished the half on a 17-5 run to close out the half with a 45-28 lead.  Lakeland cut it to nine 2 minutes into the 2nd half, but Point pulled away easily for the big win.

As frodotwo said, the bench played well again and gives the starters some much needed rest.  Four games in eight days is a tough stretch, but with three blowout losses, the starters will be fresh for the last 1/3 of a grueling 120 minutes (3 games in 5 days-Stout, Lakeland and now Eau Claire)

Hicklin is on fire and is shooting something like 59% from beyond the arc!  Hoelzel came in and played well, as did Wotachek with 6 boards and a nice rebound and shot after three consecutive missed three pointers by the Dawgs.

Also have to mention Drew's sweet reverse, over the shoulder dunk!  NICE!  El-Amin goes 0-for, but dishes out EIGHT assists, as Point assisted on 24 of 37 field goals.  Wow.  Rortvedt shoots well again, but impresses me with SEVEN boards, while Beamish has another solid all-around game-15 pts, 5 reb, 4 ast, 1 block, a steal and only one turnover.

Caltech is certainly having a good week. First, the Beavers finally win a D3 game after a decade-long drought. Then they get their name erased from an odious category in at least one former D3 opponent's record book. The geeks are barefoot and happy in Pasadena today. :D

Greek Tragedy

In my opinion, the BIG games are AT La Crosse, AT Whitewater and at home to Oshkosh.  We got Oshkosh early and could've very well lost to Whitewater at home and La Crosse pushed us to the brink at well.  Obviously, Point isn't overlooking tonight's trip to Eau Claire, the trip down to Platteville and the other conference games remaining, but the first three I mentioned stand out.

Here's a question for the general public...

WHY IN THE WORLD DOES ANYONE ATTEMPT TO PLAY A ZONE DEFENSE AGAINST US????  I laughed when Lakeland did it last night.

I would guess that Lakeland did because they know that their guys can not guard your guys.  It is a simple concept in basketball.  I would guess that Point could score 150 points if they wanted to in a straight up man to man situation.  Good athletes and good programs don't have to use gimics.  They can have a philosophy and then get players who fit.  I think that is what your program does very well.

Is anyone gonna beat Point this season?

Almost certainly.  They're just not strong enough on the inside to run the table.

I have a theory that our unseasonably warm weather in this part of the country is a result of the radiant heat eminating from Quandt Fieldhouse due to the Pointers' shooting.  However, this is Wisconsin in January, and inevitably there will be a few cold nights.
