What about Terry Porter?  I recall he was pretty good.

It's amazing that TVD downplayed their rating; he has had a huge ego historically and I'm surprised he's downplaying their preseason rank position.

Maybe they will be great but I wonder if they can beat Lawrence.  LU outhustled them the last two years and TVD was badly outcoached.  2005 might be different, sounds like it should be.

abby,

You're a homer!   ;D

To prevent those homer picks, you can't use any River Falls players! lol...you're picks are invalid...  ;)

I can't believe someone would pick Iserloth over Kalsow.  Izzy gave Point fans headaches by always going for glory and hanging out by the 3-pt. line instead of going into the post.  At his size (6'8", 240) he should be in the blocks pounding.  His rebound averages dropped each of his last three years and had only 5.1 rpg his senior year.

I liked what Izzy did and he was a great scorer...but that was about it.  Obviously Kalsow added rebounds and assists to his game.

This decade, to narrow it down. 1999-2000 seasons through 2004-2005.

No Kalsow or Pointers for me, so...

Tim Dworak-2 POTY (1 co-poty)
Aubrey Lewis-Byers-rebounding machine
Sherm Carstensen-Pointer killer (elite 8, Final 4 MVP)
Kent Becker-solid guard
Rich Melzer-2 POTY-unstoppable

Honorable Mention:
Tyler Selk-3 1st team all-conference
Vince Thomas-scoring machine

I left out Merrill Brunson simply because I really don't remember seeing him play.  Sorry.  :'( In this poll, he only played one year too!

I talked to TVD about the preseason rankings and he is somewhat questioning it as well. He knows he has an excellent team, but a team that had 19 wins last year is now considered the 2nd best team in the land?
...
Nonetheless...Oshkosh has WAY more talent then anyone could imagine.

That might be your answer right there.

P-Ville Hoops Man

Platteville had their annual Blue-Orange Inter-squad Scrimmage today.  Good chemistry from the returners and a few recruits (Bo Richter and Kyle Tetschlag) impressed.  Aside from that, let's say it's early in the season and the team isn't quite in midseason form just yet.  And I suspect senior Clay Dean might be the 5th starter this season taking the 1 spot if the scrimmage was any indication.  So to review, that's Dean, Krause, Crawford, Gossens, and Skemp.  Seems solid enough to compete to me.

playdefense

If any of you who've been around the league for 30 plus years want an all-time team - I'll give you my top 15, not in any particular order.  I'm not partial to any WIAC team so I'll include everybody.

Terry Porter - UWSP
Tony Carr - UWEC
Gib Hinz - UWEC
Sherm Carstensen - UWEC
Tim Naegeli - UWSP
Jason Kalsow - UWSP
Rich Melzer - UWRF
Tim Dworak - UWO
Aubrey Lewis-Byers - UWW
Merrill Brunson - UWP
Vince Thomas - UWS
Frank Schade - UWEC
Mike Ratliff - UWEC
Ricky Spicer - UWW
Dennis Ruedinger - UWO
Mel Coleman - UW-Stout
Ben Hoffman - UWP
Brant Bailey - UWSP
Andre McCoy - UWW
Ralph Sims - UWO

Tough list to choose because there have been so many good WSUC/WIAC players.  Great discussion idea to kick off the season.

playdefense

Sorry, actually that was my top 20.  15 wasn't enough to cover all the great talent since the early 70's.

Coach C

I think you really have to look at UWO and the talent they have, and who their losses were to before you you just call them some team that had 19 wins last year.  Plus, lets say that the NCAA actually took the best 48 teams or the tournament.  How many more wins would UWO have had last year?

the truth

No offense to Kent Becker, but Merrill Brunson belongs on everybodies list, period.  Chad Meschke should get some consideration from play defense, as well.

I will be very suprised if Gibson's older brother makes the final roster. At 6'3" I don't see him matching the talent in this conf. BadgerWarhawk saw him play also I'm sure, and might disagree though.

Mr. Downtown

I've seen Scott play in high school and was an excellent player for the Jefferson Eagles. He can shoot the rock.

Also, for the simple fact that he went to a D-I school says that he has a good deal of athletic talent. I'm sure he will make the roster, and to have another athlete coming off the bench will only help Oshkosh.

The more I look at this team, the more I am impressed with how deep this team is going to be. Is there any other teams out there in the WIAC other then Oshkosh and Whitewater that can confidently say they can go at least 9-deep?

badgerwarhawk

I saw Scott play in high school also, probably at least as often as yourself Downtown.  He's a very good athlete but his outside shooting was average at best.  The WIAC isn't an intramural league and he's been away from serious basketball competition for several years.   I don't know if he'll make your roster or not.  I kind of doubt that TVD will keep him around simply because his brother is playing.  But I don't really expect he'll have that much impact or see significant playing time.

Perhaps I'm wrong but every team has good athletes.   It takes alot more than athleticism to play successfully in the WIAC and players who have been away from the game that long will have a difficult time readjusting to the level of play.

Just my opinion.
