Wow. Titans crush the Lavender Hounds.

Maybe Ted is feeling the pressure now that Phil Meyer is out in football.  The winds of change are blowing in Oshkosh baby--another season without an NCAA appearance and Ted will be coaching high school ball. I guess he wants to keep his job.

Downtown, your call is better than the Point call.  Although they treated the Titans with respsect throughout the broadcast.

Falcons struggle to beat Superior, 76-68, without Davis, probably out for good with grade deficiency. Thompson w/21, Robertson,18, Koonkaew, 14, Olson, 13. Poor three shooting (3/15) kept RF from pulling away. Superior played much better than in the first game, RF not as well.

Point got beaten in the type of game that they were GOING to be beaten by this season.  Point didn't shoot particularly spectacular (37.7% from the field, 38.7% from deep).  Point had shot over 40% from 3 pt land in every game this season except for the NMU game and ranked second in the country in that category, averaging 43.3% from deep.

Also, they couldn't stop Kerry Gibson (9-13 from the field, 5/7 ft, 23 pts, 8 rebs, 5 blocks).  I felt that, especially in the first half, the refs seemed to be calling a quick whistl on Point a bit (fouls were at 8-2 late in the first half) but Oshkosh was aggressively attacking the hoop.  I guess the fact that Gibson was called for two offensive fouls while attacking the hoop (for what appeared, at least from my vantage point, to be lowering his shoulder and going THROUGH the defender) means that they saw it a bit too, but he definately was proactive with attacking the hoop, and they were awarding his efforts by not calling anything on the contact or calling the defensive foul, either with the blocking foul or with a reach as the Point defenders clamped down.

I thought that Point started the game great defensively, and it seemed to rattle Oshkosh a bit, causing three TO's in the first 4 possessions, grabbing and early 5 point lead 7-2 .  Rortvedt had a shadow the entire game and played pretty well considering, though I do hope he is OK.  He hit his head taking a charge in the second half and had to sit down for a bit.  Krull, as well, struggled from the field, due in large part to the fact that he was being guarded by a guy 8 inches taller than him.  Krull's outside game plays almost directly off the inside game (and vice-versa) and when he attacked the hole, he went AWAY from Gibson instead of doing the same thing Kerry was doing on the other end... going THROUGH the defender and drawing the foul.  For a 7'1" guy going against 6'4" or 6'5" defenders, it's much easier to simply put the ball where the defenders can't get to it and go through them... the 6'4" guy on offense would need to get the 7'1" guy on his him, and Gibby did quite a good job at keeing Krull in front of him (or anticipating Krull's reverse lay-ups).

One thing I didn't really like about the way Point attacked Oshkosh's defense was that they seemed to dribble the ball from one side to the other instead of passing crisply, and I also didn't think they cut to the basket enough.  When Drew Jackson is in the game, he should pull his man out and back-cut, back-cut, back-cut.  The same goes with Beamish and Hoezel, as these three guys are big enough, athletic enough, and quick enough to make the back cut and have SEVERAL options... dunking on somebody, laying it up, kicking the ball (and CRISPLY reversing the ball)...  One of Point's greatest assets is their ability to quickly get the ball to the open shooter.  The problem in this game was two-fold...  Oshkosh is a LONG team, and they play defense with their hands up, cutting down passing lanes, and Oshy was extended, as well (thanks in large part to the fact they have a 7'1" shot blocking/changing guy).

It was kind of frustrating that Point continued to shoot from deep, especially when they had success cutting to the basket, but what was more frustrating for me on this night was the fact that the crowd, the largest by far of the year at 2713, didn't really seem to get into the game a whole lot.  Now, I understand that the game was not a pretty game, but one of the only times everyone seemed to get into it was after a Hicklin 3 with 4:26 to go cut the lead to 10 points.  Point got the ball back on a rebound and a foul was called on the rebound.  However, Hicklin missed the first of a 1 and 1, and all of the energy seemed to drain out of the crowd, whatever energy there was.

I top my hat to Oshkosh.  They did what they needed to do to win the game.  Looking at the schedule, Point hosts EC next Wednesday, travels to LaX and WW, hosts Stout and Platteville, then ends the season at Superior.  Oshkosh has their next three at home against RF, LaX, and Stout, then has to travel for the final three games to EC, WW, and PV.  It's a race again, and the chances of Point sweeping through undefeated really were not very likely.

The great Joe Werner played a monster game at Mitchell Hall tonight, scoring 23 pts and hauling down 19 rebounds! He should be a lock for POY. Chris Fehrenbach added 21 as La Crosse clubbed Whitewater 67-49. Apparently, the return to the home court lifted an Eagle team which played poorly on the road last week. I must say I had no idea what the WARHAWKS were trying to do offensively, as they seemed totally out of sync. Very unimpressive for a team  which was to contend for the title. Speaking of unimpressive, I missed 3 of 4 in pick 'em, and appear doomed to finish behind chmarx in the standings. I should live this down in about three years or so.

Stevens Point...meet Mr. DJ Marsh.

Enough said.

Great game review, Downtown! lol.  Nice to talk DT and Titansrus again, and to meet cubs for the first time.  Funny how they all run down from the bleachers to talk to me after Oshkosh WINS. lol  ;D Just kidding.

I knew Marsh was a solid player before this since I've seen Oshkosh play 1/2 a dozen times.  He just needs to be more consistent.

Anyway, my game review will show up tomorrow.  Also nice to meet Frodotwo for the first time.  Maybe we'll have more time to chat the next time I'm in town (next Wednesday v EC.)....more later.

Great game review Point Special. I love going to Quandt, imo far and away best atmosphere in all of WIAC. I even say it's almost as good as the Kohl Center and I've been there for some pretty big games too. Just because it's so small compared to the Kohl Center and it gets soo loud. I thought it got really loud Point Special-especially when Hicklin made that 3 and in the first half when Point when on their couple runs. It probably didn't sound as loud to you because

A: You go to most of their games and realize how loud it can get

and

B: Point lost. Yeah, I realize the crowd is supposed to help their team get back in the game, but they can only do so much when the other teams go on 2 runs of 10-zip or more.

As I said, I love going to Quandt, and tonight was more of the same. I've been lucky to see Oshkosh defeat Point 3 times-twice when Point was #1. Here's to hoping there's a rematch-but at Oshkosh so they have the homecourt advantage.  ;)

It would appear that the UWW SID (and/or his student staff) has not done a good job of entering the attendance figures into the StatCrew program.  Only the Platteville game was entered (536) and the other three WIAC games were left blank.  Blame it on sloppy reporting from the UWW sports info office.

The accounting program at Whitewater is perenially weak so this is believable.

The accounting program is not weak, but apparently the basketball team now is.

I'm sure Miller will put the team through another strenuous workout, meaning practice from 3 to 5 and then a hard weight training session which includes Gio singing a rendition of whatever rap song is on, Craig screwing around and not taking it seriously and Mitchell and Perry staying the latest out of all of them (and giving the most effort)  I'm not kidding, that's how U DUB DUB rolls nowadays.  Not much to play for, so why care? At least football gets some effort from their kids.

Congrats Gibby and Oshy on a great win.

Point loses (story) at home to Oshkosh 72-55

La Crosse smokes Whitewater 67-49

Stout surprises Eau Claire 80-69

River Falls gets by Superior 76-68

...and in non-conference action, Clarke beats UW-Platteville 74-71.  Pioneers up 12 at half, but Clarke shoots 71 percent in the second half and 78 percent from behind the arc.  From the sound of it, some of those 3's were well-behind the arc.

I don't know what your personal vendetta is with TVD, but it's getting REAL annoying.

BTW-Phil Meyer being "out" in football was on his own terms, and included a pay increase.  Hardly the same as being fired or a "forced" resignation. ::)

Mr. Downtown

They scored more than Oshkosh did against La Crosse...

Though, the Titans also played some hard nosed defense as well...only giving up 48 and almost snuck away with a win on the road.

I was surprised by the margin of the UWO victory.I listened to the game on the Point web,Would have preferred to hear Mr. Downtown! O did everything right. The radio stressed how they contended every 3,similar to PV,accept the ball did not go in. However, UWP does not have the eraser in the post! Do not panic Point fans, you still have a one game lead. UWO keep playing this way and you, like Point could win a Championship! I wish both teams could get into different regions, so they could get to Salem together, if they win out! If an upset occurs in the WIAC tournament, we should get 3 teams into the Playoffs. God Bless!

Not a chance.  It happened last year.  It will not happen this year.  Write it down.  Pat Coleman, jump in here anytime with an opinion on this one.  We in the WIAC tend to get a bit full of ourselves at times.
