That's pretty much what I thought. However, I certainly wouldn't mind being wrong. He is a heck of a good athlete, and a VERY VERY good student, and from what I've heard, a real nice kid. I'd like to see him make the team, contribute, and have fun.

Thoughts on 20th ranked Platteville scrimmaging 14th ranked Wartburg this friday.  Everyone in the IIAC camp is talking up Wartburg (Oshkosh) to a gross level...undefeated season, conference crown, tourney bid.  Do my Pioneers even stand a chance in this scrimmage.  I certainly think so.  ADD: Wartburg plays Iowa this season in an exhibition game in Iowa City.  Thought I'd throw that out there for those interested in D3 basketball outside the WIAC.

Speaking of exhibitions... who's playing who (and when) for exhibition games in the WIAC?  I know Point doesn't have one this year but they do have a couple of scrimmages against D-2 teams (Parkside and Michigan Tech).

PS.

The WARHAWKS are playing Marquette on November 14th.

River Falls is playing WISCONSIN this Sunday, Nov. 5th.

Platteville plays UWM on November 8th.

Stout plays UWGB on November 9th.

For the heck of it I'm going to try and guess how the SIDs will see the season.

1. Oshkosh
2. WHITEWATER
3. Platteville
4. Stout
5. Stevens Point
6. LaCrosse
7. River Falls
8. Eau Claire
9. Superior

bhawk-
That seems pretty good, but I will switch Point and Stout.  I think it will be very interesting to see where LaCrosse ends up this year.  That's a team with a lot of unproven potential, but we all know what potential gets you sometimes.

pioneerbacker,
Having seen the LaCrosse team of the last few years I was, in the past, a little harsh on the coaching moreso out of frustration.  This is Coach Koelbl's year to prove that he can be an effective coach in the WIAC otherwise I think it will be seen by fans that he can't 'cut it', for lack of better terms in the WIAC.

The players are there.  Guys like Marcus Conigliaro, Chris Ask, Joe Werner and transfers Luke Homan(UWM) and Jarrod Pelkopfer(UWGB) should give Lacrosse numerous formiddable options.  With that being said it's time to put up a contender.  The team last year had the talent to be in the WIAC tournament but other aspects of the squad seemed to tone that down, it's time for Lax to step up in the WIAC.  Time to make results not excuses.

They are going to be fairly young, with a new coach, and having lost six seniors who played key roles on two National Championship teams...

So, I understand that UWSP isn't getting the love in the preseason. But I have a hunch that no one is going to want to play this team come WIAC tournament time...

BDB

Switch Point and Stout,  P-Backer  ???

I would switch Whitewater and Stout  :)

Winneconne_Legend

Point is rough shape this year...no one seems to get this...look out for Stout, they will be a dangerous team, especially at home. They didn't lose anyone and you never know who Fast Eddie will be bringing to campus. I think Oshkosh will win, but I'll be cheering for the Blue Devils (unless my Falcons make a run)

It's a scrimmage.  Scrimmages prove what?

My picks were an attempt to guess how the SID's are thinking and not necessarily how I think things will shake out.  Personally, I'm of the opinion that Point will be better than people will give them credit for.  They lost several good players but those that are left aren't that bad, they've added some more and I've got a hunch they won't forget how to play defense.

You have to understand we're talking how the SID's will see the conference race.  Whitewater gets "the nod" a lot, so at this point I'm not putting Stout in the #2 spot.   I do think Platteville is a realistic #3.  If you want a good laugh though, look at the preseason predictions for football to see how accurate these predictions are.

BDB, I think you have a valid point with Whitewater and Stout, and I would love nothing more than to see Whitewater in the 4 or 5 or 6...spot ;).  I also think you have to take into account the preseason Top 25 poll with how the SID's see the race.  Whitewater is naturally going to get the #2 spot and Platteville #3.  When Platteville makes the "real" tourney this year, you can fight Whitewash and Oshy for the at-large  :D.  jk.

laxeagles-you're right about coach koelbl and this team, and if anyone has met him, you know he's a class act.  I hope him the best this year and an opportunity to get in the conference tournament because I think last year there probably weren't too many teams wanting to meet that team late in the year.

BDB

I hear what you are saying Pioneerbacker. Just sticking up for my boys  :)

Think you'll make it up to Johnson Fieldhouse for the Pio-Devil game?

you see that stout has a 6 11 320 lb kid that's interests include dirt bike racing or something like that?  It's true you never know who Eddie will bring in

Actually I think we wouldn't have minded that too much.....

UW-Whitewater 83, UW-La Crosse 58 (02/12/05 at Kachel Fieldhouse, Whitewate)
 UW-La Crosse.................. 28 30 -  58
 UW-Whitewater................. 42 41 -  83

Not that it matters but LaCrosse lost five of their last seven games last year beating a collapsing Stout and, to their credit, a good Oshkosh team.  The average point spread was almost 10 points though if you take the WW game out of the mix it drops significantly and they were certainly more competitive than the early half of the season.

I agree Coach K is a class which is part of the reason I took exception to some of eagle's comments regarding him.
