Didn't LU play Osh at Albee Hall a couple of years ago?  Why not play there?  1000 people in a packed house would have a lot better atmosphere than 1000 fans at the Kolf, IMO.

Yep, played Lawrence, I believe...

Alright, haven't really posted anything serious here in a while.

Albee Hall is an awesome place to watch basketball, the oshkosh girls team played there up until the 01-02 (i think) season when the WIAC went to the double header schedule with both guys and gals playing on the same nights. The thing with Albee Hall is that it wasn't a safe court to play on because ice and snow would start to creep on the court from people's shoes because the court was so close to the bleachers. I'm pretty sure the locker room facilities weren't up to par either, but the atmosphere was always electric. Also, it freed up gym space for students since then the girls moved all practices over to Kolf as well.

As far as Kolf goes, it doesn't provide the best atmosphere but the facilities are better than albee and allowed for great broacasting flexibility. If the students got out there more often it would be a better atmosphere. I also like the idea of seperating the open space with a divider like they have at YMCA's. They had one up at Hope College too.

My most memorable games that I broadcasted were at Zorn. Girls games in particular. The EC-Oshkosh rivalry always had the fans in a frenzy. Even though we got put up in the rafters we could still feel the place shake when the bleachers got pounded on.
The worst games were at Whitewater. The staff really never made it conveniant to broadcast the games. They always made us pay for the phone line (the jack was at the top of the bleachers) and being so far away from the court made it tough to see close calls.

My whole thought about the bleachers really comes from seeing what Gustavus Adolphus had set up.  Their set up had the floor over on one half of the fieldhouse, with a drop-down tarp at about the halway point (well, maybe not halfway... but close).  Without this, it would have made the gym seem really big and not as full for Point's matchup with them in 03-04.  Instead, this was the most nuts place I've ever seen.

Now, a GREAT deal of this was due to GAC's students... there were 3300 people at the game, and half of them were GAC students... and GAC doesn't have many more students than that!

See pictures HERE

Check out this shot HERE... in the background, you can kind of see what I mean.  If Oshkosh was able to shift the floor closer to the concession stand and then drop a barrier on the far end, then you can STILL have the 5000 capacity, still be able to host indoor track and field events, but not have such a GIANT building...

Are the bleachers underneath the basket (which are only pulled out occasionally if I remember correctly) really necessary?  Especially on the last shot, look how close the barrier is to the court.  Far enough that it's not dangerous... but not a wall 70 yards away.

All great ideas about UWO. My question is, will the adminisration at UWO look at this? God Bless!

I agree with OS that we need to win the tourney to get an NCAA bid.

BTW, today's La Crosse Tribune had an article about Joe Werner and Katy Searing (one of the senior stars of the women's team) being engaged.  Nice article.  They seem like a really nice couple.

Short answer:  Maybe.

Will it matter?  As the 8-ball would say...

My sources say no.

Heck yes!  Albee COULD be packed frequently and make the Titan's home court a place that is feared by opponents instead of just a place where the atmosphere seems to be non-existant...

It sounds like there may be some safety concerns there, however?  It would seem like something like wet/snowy shoes could be avoided by some type of floor covering to avoid it, perhaps...?  I dunno.

I mean, I think the best solution wouldn't actually be Albee, but there SHOULD be something done to make Kolf more intimate... and I don't know that it would take THAT much to do it.

Now, I understand that those drop down tarps run in the 6-figures, especially ones that big, and no, I'm not offering to donate... but, like I said, what're the chances that any changes are made, anyway?

Mr. Downtown

Being the TV Sports Director at UWO...I would prefer NOT to play at Albee  :D ;D

I'm curious with the math for UW-Oshkosh with the recent post you had Old School. It's just kinda weird to have a top 10 team in the nation, be so low on that scale...

Mr. Downtown

Conference Tourney

1   Stevens Point
8   Eau Claire

4    Platteville
5    Whitewater

3     La Crosse
6     River Falls

2     Oshkosh
7     Stout

With Point's win over Stout this past Saturday, and thanks to the tie breakers, it basically clinched home court advantage for the conference tourney.

Then again, they way they play at Quandt (close wins over WW, LAX, Stout, and there only D-III loss this season to Osh) compared to on the road...perhaps Point wouldn't mind playing on the road  :D

Greek Tragedy

I'm not sure why.  Maybe because their wins against some of the nonconference teams weren't impressive.  They have four losses...La Crosse twice, Stevens Point, and Elmhurst...losses against tough teams.

And the rankings of d3hoops has nothing to do with the QOWI...as I'm sure you already know.

Combine that with close wins at Platteville, River Falls, Whitewater and La Crosse, it's even! lol ;D :D ;) ::) :P  And of course I'd rather play at home!

OshDude

There's no way BB games would be switched from Kolf back to Albee. If any of you remember the Oshkosh/Lawrence game a few years ago, the refs had to let travels go on every possession due to the slippery floor. It really was a joke that two good teams had to play on that floor. Plus, the floor at Albee is considerable smaller.
Oshkosh would have to put in a new surface for home games to be played at Albee. That's not happening. And the only reason why the LU game was played there was because Kolf could not have been ready that day due to commencement ceremonies the day before.
I agree that the only remedy to the Kolf malaise is to get more student fans in the stands.

badgerwarhawk

There isn't a team in the league that likes to play in the Kolf Center other than Oshkosh.  It's like playing in a convention center where the baskets seemingly hang in space.  With the backdrop so far behind the baskets it makes it a difficult gym to shoot in.  It's a big advantage and it would be silly for them to move to a smaller gym so the atmosphere is better.   I like the divider idea though.  Anything to bring the backdrop closer to the court.

I know our Women's Volleyball team loves playing on that court  ;D
