PC picks Point to win it all.

Could this be the equivalent to the SI jinx?????

Well, Point won the championship (as picked) in 2005, so....

Guess that shoots that theory down the crapper!

I think I would've put Beyer in ahead of Price, simply because I thought Beyer was more consistent and Price didn't even start half the year.

The preseason poll had Whitewater, Oshkosh, Stevens Point, Stout and La Crosse.  Both Koelbl and Semling deserved it.  I think Semling gets the nod (I don't think it's a homer pick) because he took a 3rd place, 10 loss team (overall) to first and a 2 loss team.  Point didn't make the NCAA tourney last year either.  Semling and La Crosse swept Oshkosh, but Point swept La Crosse, that might have factored in.  La Crosse went from 4th to 2nd, but I think Point's climb to 1st from 3rd is more impressive.

Quote from: PointSpecial on March 01, 2007, 01:34:04 PMYou're right, I did forget about OWU.  It simply slipped my mind and I made the erroneous assumption that a team who could reach the pinacle of the D-III basketball world would be a team that would have made strides over the years to reach those heights.  ... This was the case with all other champions... but taking a cursory look at the champions in the last 20 or so years, each team (save OWU) has made the NCAA tournament and achieved at least a second round berth in either the year before or the year after their National Championship run... which would seem to make sense... Due the fact that most players are at school for multiple years, combinations of players that "work" one year should "work" in other years too.

That's what makes the OWU title of '88 the great anomaly of D3 tourney history. The team was like a meteor -- it blazed across the heavens from out of nowhere for one March, and then was gone completely.

The team had two stars, All-American guard Scott Tedder and forward Lee Rowlinson. Tedder was the MVP of the tourney, and then after graduation he went on to play minor-league baseball. When he was with the Class AA Birmingham Barons in the White Sox system back in the mid-'90s he had a teammate named Michael Jordan. Someone mentioned to Jordan that he had a teammate who had also played a little college basketball back in the day, so Jordan challenged Tedder to a game of one-on-one. Reportedly, Jordan said later, "Tedder can play a little."

I would imagine that hearing those five words was the second-biggest highlight of Scott Tedder's athletic career.

You guys are forgeting somebody that goes by the name of Jeff Skemp!!!
He'll be fully recovered from his knee injury and with almost all the other big men graduating this year, nobody will be able to stop him next

I love Jeff to death, and wish him well on his continuing recovery.  But unless he "mans up", and starts playing like he is 6'10" instead of 6'3" I just don't see it happening.  He's got good feet, he proved in the 8 games he played he could hit the 17 footer, but don't want to see him basically shy away from the post or hoop when he has 6'6" on him.  He could dominate this league the next two years, but it is going to be up to him if he wants to or not.  I don't know when you and you're brother hit you're growth spurts, but Jeff was a "late bloomer" in regards to his height.  He's always been tall, but he really shot up late in high school, which I think has attibuted to his athleticism and strength.  He was 6'7" as a senior in high school, trying to win football games and setting records as a QB, you don't see that everyday!

#4061

We have always been tall, 6' in 7th grade, 6'8" as a junior and at some point between there and here we made it to 7'.  we also were blessed with a metabolism running at supersonic speed so no matter how much we eat or work out it is hard to gain weight.  (bout 255 lbs today)

I do think Jeff will have a very good year next year and i hope he gets POY (bigs got to stick together and he was one of my fav guys to talk to in this league)

Price is good but someone in point named Pete should be the front runner.

I did forget Jeff, but as Pioneerhoops alluded to, playing up to his potential is squarely on his shoulders. I haven't bothered to look, but POY in the WIAC is usually won by seniors isn't it?

Skemp was probably the hardest person for me to guard the first round of the WIAC.  Granted he has some things to learn, like when to bang and when to release.  The only person P'ville loses is "The Goose", that leaves them with a verteran group of returners.  Stevens point is the odds on favorite to repeat, but P'ville could be very competitive.
