OK... the truth is out.  The only reason why I support the UW Stevens Point Men's basketball team is because I love their uni's so much... NOT because I go to school here or because they've won two straight National Championships.  If it wasn't for the brilliant Purple or dazzling Gold (not to mention those new Black uni's) I just couldn't find it in myself to give a rip about the Pointers. ???  (?)

LaXEagles1... the way your second-to-last post was going (knowing your history of posting over the last two years, as well) I thought you were going to say that the guys at UW Eau Claire quit because they didn't like Coach Koelbl (not because of anything about Coach Gibbons)...  :P

I think it's interesting how you seem to be jumping on the LaX bandwagon when it appears that they're going to do well this season.  Funny, La Crosse's contributors are going to be guys that Coach K recruited... hmm...

I think La Crosse is going to be a pretty good team this season, and I've always respected Coach Koelbl and the way he does things.  And I'd even take that Div 7 football team against the rest of Div 7, and probably bigger divisions too!

Intersquad scrimmage in Point tonight.  Not sure if I'm going to be able to stop by and see it, but if I do, I fully reserve the right to withhold any information I may have about the new Pointers...  Far be it for me to spoil the surprise of what this team looks like until they show up in town, ready to play and again defend their National Championship!

pointspecial, anyone who knows me, including the players that do, know I am one of the biggest fans who is at almost every home game.  I have been through thin and thin here........I am not jumping on the bandwagon, that will happen when there are 1000 fans or more at a lax game not 200(of which i can say i was proudly one of them)........

werner, owen, bemis were not recruits of koelbl.......His guard and forward recruiting have been great up to this point, but interior wise he has not gotten contributing players downlow(that he has recruited)................I will agree he has done a great job recruiting, the question is can he coach a talented team?  that is the question that is left to be answered

RF didnt look that bad at their scrimmage tonight against St Thomas. They played physical, especially in the post, and managed to hang with UST for the first half. Second half was a little worse for the Falcons, as UST got in their flow and started to take it to them. Was impressed with Hoeg, who showed a very nice jumper, and Zylstra was servicable in the post. He did have numerous shots blocked, and was soft on the offensive end. The point position will provide a serious problem for them, as someone alluded to earlier; Kossoris was handling it with the starting crew. The offense was getting set up 25 feet away from the bucket, as UST was pressuring him up the court. They had a pretty big lineup, and Bowen was going into his 3s in the post often. Overall, not too bad for the Falcons-though they did take their lumps from a talented St Thomas squad.

The UW-Oshkosh mens basketball page has the Street & Smith D-3 rankings page up.

One thing that was interesting, the only Oshkosh pre season All American was Kerry Gibson as an honorable mention.  While that may be warranted, I think that Capelle deserves at least an honorable mention over Kerry.

titansrus

Hey Kluch, D3hoops.com just posted their preseason All-Americans and Jim Capelle is 3rd team while Andy Jahnke is Honorable Mention. Kerry Gibson nowhere to be found, little surprised there.

No offense to Gibson, but the guy didn't even make 1st team All-Conference in his own league.

Cappelle made 1st team both of his years, while Gibson didn't make anything his first year and only honorable mention last year.  I have no doubts that Gibson will be a solid player this year, but it doesn't surprise me, nor does it really matter at this time, who makes All-American or whatever.   :o

You're right Old School, it doesn't matter at this time, but I will not be one bit surprised if by the end of the year Gibson is somewhere on this list. He wasn't their main option last year and still won't be last year, but if you saw any of their games at the end of the year, he was progressing nicely and was realizing how to take over a game-Eau Claire game that went to overtime. He is gonna be a major force to deal w/down low this year and I think he's gonna have a very good year.

Mr. Downtown

Let's put this way,

either
A) You double team Capelle and let Jahnke and Gibson beat you

B) You double-team Jahnke and let Capelle and Gibson beat you

C) You double-team Gibson and let Capelle and Jahnke beat you

D) You play Man defense and let Gibson eat you alive

or

E) You play zone and let Capelle and Jahnke eat you alive

I agree it doesn't matter whatsoever who gets recognition or not. But I would put Jim Capelle, Andy Jahnke, and Kerry Gibson as THE top three players in this conference.

Anyone want to argue?

John Gleich

I don't care to "argue", as you put it... but I will disagree with you.  I'd put Joe Werner in the top 3 in the conference, hands down.  He was first team all-conference last year... Gibby was just Honorable Mention.

Werner lead the conference in rebounding last year, and he was 3rd in fg%.  He avereged more per game than Gibson.

I think Manchester will have a good year too.  As a Junior, he was 2nd in assists to the National and Conference Player of the Year Jason Kalsow and third in steals.  He also had a 3-2 assist to turnover ratio.

Mr. Downtown, I agree with Point Special. Andy Jahnke is a very good player, but out of all your situations, i would take A and double Capelle and have Jahnke beat me. But I think he's right that Joe Werner is better.

I can't argue with the three that Oshkosh possesses, it will be interesting to see how things pan out though for the Titans.

All three could be conference player of the year (with minor exception to Gibby, I respect his game but don't think that he will get the numbers others will put up).  Prolly Cappelle is my preseason pick.

Watch out for UWW.  Can't wait for the exhibition to see all 23 players on the roster try to beat the mighty Mar-Al-Quette.  It will be interesting to see who starts?  Manchester, Anderson, Miggins, Toellner, and Williams are my guesses.

Strong bench play will be key.

Winneconne_Legend

There are a few players I would take over Jahnke and Gibson....I do agree that Capelle is likely the best All-Around player in the WIAC....

Here are a few names worth mentioning

Joe Werner
Mark Gossens (maybe the most under rated player in the WIAC)
Melvin Williams
Terry Farmer (if given 35 min/night)
Hans Hoeg
Leonard Cobb

I would take all of these guys of Jahnke...and I would put Gibson in the mix with that group

Capelle has the inside track on POY as he was third in the voting last year and both players ahead of him have graduated.  From what I've heard he's made very productive use of his offseason and he's going to be a very difficult matchup for anyone in the league.

Downtown, it's interesting that you now consider Jahnke one of the three best players in the league.  As I recall last year both yourself and T2K made negative comments about his shooting on more than one occassion.  I'm just wondering what's happened that you've suddenly elevated him to elite status.  I can understand Capelle and superduper Gibson but why Jahnke?

BadgerWarhawk, Mr. Downtown might be able to describe this better than myself because he asked this question at Media Day, but it went something like this: Has Andy Jahnke improved his jump shot over the summer? Coach Van Dellen said he had and the reason he relied so much on the jump shot last year was that when he was at Youngstown State he was unable to beat guys off the dribble and needed to rely on on his jump shot. He had it ingrained in his head that he couldn't beat guys off the dribble that he settled on the jump shot. Over the summer he worked on getting into the lane and TVD thinks he'll be a dangerous matchup in the post and once he gets in the lane this year. I agree that he's improved, but I don't see him as top 3.....yet.
