A few of your Jack Bennett questions were addressed in the following article from the Stevens Point Journal...

Thanks for the link, Bandit.  I guess we'll know in a couple weeks.

Mr. Downtown

"Why in the world would Jack want to leave SP to coach at LMC, Concordia?  It's a weaker program in a weaker league so it's a backwards move career wise and he's been a little too successfull for that".
Hmm..perhaps you should have told that to coach Pam Ruder before she left Oshkosh  :)

I know Ruder does not have the same resume as coach bennett. I just thought it was kinda funny how I look back at it.

Moving on, I remember awhile ago, somebody was attempting to lecture me about how there is more to coaching then just winning championships. The "challenge" of coaching a team that has no shot at winning the conference, and then make them contenders is what drives coaches. Hmm..I forgot who said that to me. Well anyways, my opinion about Bennett going to Concordia...why not? I'm sure being a private school (here we go again..), perhaps they could afford more money? I mean, if I was Bennett, I would be jabbing at the athletic department to um...well..boost that salary of mine :).

Seriously, on a competition level, the move wouldn't make sense. Then again, what is there left to accomplish at Stevens Point for Coach Bennett? One has to think (especially with Bennett's) that there comes a time to move on, and take on a new challenge. If Bennett can go to Concordia, and turn them into a program he has right now, then I would have to consider him a top 10 coach EVER in D-III (like im an expert on all the coaches that have every graced the sidelines in the history of D-III, but I would consider him one of the best).

Though, with that being said, I expect him on the sidelines in Point this year.

It's my understanding that the Concordia job is Bennett's for the taking - an offer is on the table and they are waiting for him to give them a decision (if he hasn't already). They pursued him. They would like to have a new coach named ASAP and have other candidates in line behind him if he turns them down.

Why wouldn't it be? CUW would be a fool not to make him an offer.

Greek Tragedy

I would hate to see Bennett go to CUW, simply because I went to Lakeland and I hate Concordia!  My own selfish reasons...  >:(

I would respectfully disagree. Unless Bennett is willing to make a longer-term commitment and the school is willing to put a lot more resources (dollars and people) into basketball, I think CUW would be better served bringing in a proven assistant who is looking to make an impact as a head coach. Something similar to what Lakeland did with Paul Combs. With all due respect to what Bennett has accomplished - and this is not to take anything away from that - he will be hard pressed to even come close to duplicating that at CUW. The resources are just not there at most LMC schools - at least not right now. Maybe I'm way off base on this - perhaps he sees it as a career challenge and would work 5-10 years to turn them into a regional and then national power. But I doubt it. So if he comes in for 2-3 years, aside from having the name on your record books, what does it give their program long term?

i like the new posting up. i think its a bad career move for Bennett to move to Concordia, WI. in the coaching world, unless they have something that i don't know, its a step down. i'm not sure how he'd benefit from moving to a lower level D3 school, unless he wants the challenge of taking a lower level to the national tournament. who knows, not me. any thoughts?

Winneconne_Legend

Good to see Frankie T back in the mix.

If Jack takes the Concordia job it gives him a pretty easy out. Point is not going to be anything like they have been the past few years, that's not to say they will be fighting Superior for the cellar but they aren't going to Salem. Jack can get out of a potentially dissapointing senario and head to a new school where he will have a few years to build before the expectations get too high.

Other question...I haven't heard too much about Floyd N-B leaving Superior for MSOE. Is there a story behind that move???

frankiet

i did it for you winn leg, i did it for you.

wut! floyd is out?!?!?!

Thoughts on Bennett...

1. Financial. If he "retires" from the UW System, he will begin collecting retirement. I am not exactly sure how long he has been in the UW system, but he will collect apprx 50% of his salary (if he chooses this payout option). That is proabably around $35,000. If he takes the CUW position, and they pay him $80,000, he has just recieved a $45,000 raise. (This is based on a current salary of $70,000 which is an educated guess)

2. Bob Semling. One of the best guys in the business. When Bob came to UWSP it was with the thought of becoming the head coach. This could be Jack's way of making sure it happens.

That scenario sounds familiar.  I've seen it somewhere else before.  Give me a minute, it will come.   Oh ya, now I remember.   But I'm over it.  ;D

Basketball announcement coming from UWSP Friday afternoon at 2:00....

fishguy

The word is that he will announce he is stepping down. But does this mean he is taking the Concordia-Wis. job? It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Pat Coleman

Judging from the lack of response I got from CUW, I don't believe Bennett is in the running there anymore.
