April, you have to take genetic regression into account.  Essentially, children of parents who are far from the norm tend to be closer to the norm than their parents.

If you think about it, like tends to marry like.  If there were no genetic regression, we would no longer be one species.

If you married a tall man, your children would be tall, but likely to be shorter than you and your husband.

The only short people in my genetic line up were my paternal grandfather and my husband's maternal grandmother. The rest of us women were 5'8" and taller, the men all over 6'. I figured my daughters (I'm over 5'10" and my husband something over 6'; my brother was 6'5" before he started shrinking; my mother-in-law was my height--all indications said TALL) would be 6'2". I counted on it. Both are shorter than me. You just can't count on genetics.

The 2007 recruiting class for UW Oshkosh looks like this at this point:

SG Greg Schrimpf-6'0" Manitowoc Roncalli (Ranked #22 among Wisconsin Seniors)
F Chris Novak-6'5" Brown Deer (Transfer from Michigan Tech-will have 3 years of eligibility left)
Well UWO's recruiting class continues to get better as they add their 3rd Wisconsin Top 50 Senior this week.

F Andy Kretsch-6'4" Manitowoc Lincoln (Ranked #24 among Wisconsin Seniors)
2008-09 and 2012-13 WIAC Fantasy League Champion

2008-09 WIAC Pick'Em Tri-Champion

I assume Chris Novak is related to ex-Marquette star Steve Novak.  If I remember correctly he also played at Brown Deer HS.

This is why DIII schools and sports and posting boards are so awesome, right there. ;) Either that or the fact that you guys took my mock idea "seriously" and decided to jump on the theoretical bandwagon with me talk me down from it. :D

My mom is 6'0".... she married a 5'10" guy (whose dad was a democratic politician and his family lost everything in the Korean war, so obviously some nutrition issues). My sister is 5'6", I am 5'9" and my brother is 6'4". Talk about randomness. if I was really my basketball roster height, I'd be right in the middle. :D

There definitely has to be the genes somewhere in order for someone to be tall, regardless of whether the person is actually tall. In our family's case, there's been history of tall people on both sides. All sorts of growth and development variables affect height, but it's helpful to have the genes, that's where the whole initial theory came from.

So I guess in order to successfully have these star center kids, I'll have to hope for genetic drift rather than genetic regression.  ;D

Personally I think that one of the main reasons we don't become two different species is that really tall guys frequently fall for really short girls, such as my roommate in college who is 5'4" marrying a 6"5" guy this summer. Eventually if tall people only married tall people, their kids would be purebred tall people. :D :D :D

Woo, another lady poster! Yeah we're out numbered 15-1, but we're still pretty awesome. ;)

My father was 6' 4 1/2, my mother is 5'10.  I have a 5'9 sister and I'm 5'11 1/2.  I married a 5'6 woman and we had two daughters both of whom are 5'9.

April, awesome doesn't do you justice.  With those cookies of yours and the fact you seem to be a sports junkie I'd rate you stupendous. ;)

Joe Werner has been invited to the Green Bay Packers rookie camp this weekend.

You would have to figure he was going to be invited to the camp since they've already tested him and talked to him.  It is whether or not he's going to make past the camp that is in doubt.

I once heard that you could estimate the height of a child by using the average of the two parents' heights.  It went like this:

For Boys:  (Dad + Mom)/2 + 3.5 inches

For Girls:  (Dad + Mom)/2 - 3.5 inches

I'm sure that has all the accuracy of a Bridgewater football timekeeper, but it's fun anyway.

So April, if you're 5'9'' and you want to produce an 8'0'' center, all you need to do is find a man who is 9'8'' tall.  See, it's so simple when you break it down scientifically.

The Manty boys will bring a whole new type of fishing style into the Oshkosh program--as the Lake Michigan salmon and trout techniques are much different than the Pogan/Wolf River techniques that TVD stresses at Oshkosh.  ;)

I think if I wait for a guy that tall, it will increase the likelyhood that I'll never get married to 100%. I think the probability is high enough as it is without any height requirements, thanks. :P :D ;)

That's formula is sweet though. I can shoot a little lower now... like 7'9' will get me a 7 ft tall kid. Which is good cause as far as I can tell, there are only 8 people on record that have been over 8 ft tall, and I found a list that only listed 44 basketball players on record that were over 7 ft tall! :D

This conversation is just getting weird. :D

April,

If you give up on 8 footers, there's always Old School: Wheaton needs point guards too! ;)

Hah, are you sure his girlfriend wouldn't mind a little?  ??? ::) :-X :D Besides, I just reduced the number to 7'9"... I know you're an IWU fan and all, but don't you dare try to sabotage Wheaton recruit class of 2030(ish). :P

April, the genetic regression thing is more obvious when you consider intelligence.  It is a factor where spouses are MUCH more likely to be similar than height.  Again, we are one species, not two; therefore genetic regression.

Thanks for being so good-humored.  I've met Old School a few times.  Hope to meet you eventually.  We have an open football date at La Crosse.  Is Wheaton available?  ;)

April it sounds like yo uare not looking for someone for Wheaton but the next Greg Oden to play for the Badgers (not OSU) and the top draft pick.

I was told 6'9" was as heigh as I was going to get early in my life ... then like the energizer bunny I kept going and going and going......

My gf is 5'10" and played volleyball. should our little dating experiment work out who knows how tall the kids will be.  All I know is they better take care of their old man!!!!
You are only as good as the people around you.
