True, but the NCAA permits that everyone needs to take a full week off during the season.

So, if you take the full week off right away, you don't have to worry about it later.

Plus, Oshkosh typically doesn't play on opening weekend anyway.  (Got to protect TVD's hunting time, right T2K?)  So they really have an extra week to get ready anyway.

Is the full week off rule across the board for all divisions?  I've never recalled UW or MU off for a full week!

Gentlemen,

Yes, it is different for D-III.  Here are the rules we are discussing:

17.5.1 Length of Playing Season. The length of an institution’s playing season in basketball shall be limited to a maximum of 19 weeks between the start of preseason practice (see Bylaw 17.5.2) and the end of the regular playing season (see Bylaw 17.5.4).

17.5.2.1 On-Court Practice. A member institution shall not commence on-court preseason basketball practice sessions before October 15.

First issue:  Practice can begin on October 15th, not the 13th.  Division I rules allow practice on the Saturday and Sunday prior because there is no missed class time involved (Bobby Knight was the guy who really pushed for starting on Saturday instead of Monday).  D-III did not adopt this rule.

Second issue:  The rule states that you are permitted 19 weeks of practice and playing time.  However, if you count the weeks from Oct. 15th to the end of February (the end of the regular season) you see that there are 20 available weeks.  Therefore, each school has to take a weeklong break at some point.  For 95% of schools this is the week of Christmas, but it could be any other week, as the Oshkosh case shows.  This rule does not exist in D-I.

Remember also that a week does not have to be Sunday to Saturday.  With Christmas on a Tuesday this year I would guess many schools will stop practicing on the Friday prior to Christmas and resume on the Thursday following (or something similar depending on their schedule).

Thanks, JB, you saved me the time of looking for it myself.   Much appreciated.

We should not be so mean to TVD.  Just because he always has a lot of talent doesnt mean that it is easy to win.  As long as he can finish in the top 4 of the conference he will always be able to find extra time for his hobbies

Interesting poll at the top of the page.

In looking at the schedule UW-Stout also plays D-2 Michigan Tech on the road. Michigan Tech was ranked #1 in the country during the season a few years back.

Why isn't EC in the poll?  I mean c'mon.... they only play Finlandia twice this year!  ;D

Nice!   :D

Michigan Tech beat Northern Michigan at the beginning of last year and then lost by 20+ twice at the end of the year.  Point lost to Northern Michigan last year.  I think their record as 15-13 or something like that last year (Michigan Tech).

I won't stick my neck out on the poll, but it looks like Augustana has the opportunity to win the WIAC as well as the CCIW. ;)

Well, WIAC teams have to take nonconference games where they can find them!  ;D
