I am a Johnnie poster and would concur that the J's win over WW was an upset. If anything I thought WW might monkey stomp the J's. IMO if last years Johnnie team (that got pounded by SP) would play this years team they would win 7 of 10!

The Johnnies are a top 6 team in the MIAC. I don't think they have the depth to be on eof the top two teams! They are also one injury away from not making the playoffs! They need a healthy Brady Brink.

One of the Stout guys asked about Joe Werner some time ago.  I've been seeing him and his wife at games, but I just heard a rumor that he is playing in Australia.  If its true, he must have just gone down under.

Reese, 5'9", a junior transfer from a Mps. CC, shot 7/7 yesterday, including 1/1 threes. Today he "cooled off" with a 5/8 shooting  performance, including  3/6 threes, 6 rbds., 8 assts., one t.o. He has developed into a capable replacement for Koonkaew.

Is there some sort of voodoo required to get the webcast for Pointer games?  When there is a game available (according to the UWSP website), I click on the Live Audio link, which takes me to the B1049 page.  There I click the 'Listen Live" button, which opens a new window and (after a time) an automated voice says

"The following is an audiocast, brought to you by Webstream Internet S..."

It always cuts off there, and the promised audiocast never follows.  This is not just tonight, but every time I've tried this this season.  Am I doing something wrong and/or stupid? ???

EDIT:  Never mind.  After 5 minutes or so it suddenly came on!  Patience is a virtue, after all, I suppose...

Point loses at Cal Lutheran by 2 in OT.  The only lead in the game for CLU was the final score.

Greek Tragedy

Well, that sucked.  72-70 to Cal. Lutheran in OT.  Cal. Luth. misses both free throws with 7 seconds left, so Point has a chance to tie or win.  Jerome Wotachek misses at the buzzer.  Point really struggled.  Give up 50 points in the 2nd half after having a 37-22 lead at the break.  Yuck.

Bit of a rough break for the WIAC.  As a conference fan I hate to see some of the losses we have taken (Point, UWW, Oshy and stout).

I hope that we are able to finish without it hurting to much (as in 2 team in the national tourney and going deep into it)

Point's radio guys have had some technical difficulties throughout the year this year...

Here's the box score from last night's game.

Point got outrebounded 42-28 and CLU took 20 more free throws.  Add to that Point's 13 TO's (including many untimely ones:  5 in the last 9 minutes and one to start the OT) and Point's lack of perimeter presense (due to a couple possible factors... Rortvedt was out with an injury and, though he came back strong against Augie, it's still got to be a process to come back fully... and CLU had been holding opponents to 57.4 points and .285 shooting from deep.

Even with the loss though, it's encouraging to see guys like Hoelzl playing well.  He's always played really hard and is a great athlete... I see great things for him in the future!!  And Louis Hurd continues to be the most efficient player Point has... he scores more points per minute played than anybody on Point's roster.

Point will be able to bounce back from this... it's a tough loss, especially because Point led by 17, and 9 as late as 5:00 minutes to go.  That loss in and of itself shouldn't disqualify them for post season consideration... The loss in combination with several conference losses may.

It will be interesting to see how the replacement for the SOSI (with Opponents and Opponents-opponents winning percentages taken into account) affects conferences such as the WIAC, which does have a high non-con winning percentage.  Though it has seemed like teams (especially top tier ones like Point, WW, Oshkosh) have lost lately, their non-con records are pretty good.

Oshkosh is at 5-2, Whitewater 6-1, Platteville 6-2, Point 8-1.  What will cause these teams to get passed over will be an additional 4 or 5 (or more) losses in conference.

Well OxyBob, that and the fact that 41% of their shots were behind the arc...  Point needs to call Jon Krull and have him come back and teach everybody up on the art of WANTING to get fouled!

Oshkosh whips up on Finlandia, 82-58.

I didn't even stick around for the end of that one. First time I've done that in a long time. Finlandia is not Funlandia. Pretty bad team there.

Matt Miller hit a 3 on the first possession. DJ Marsh had a steal and a dunk on the next. The rout was on early. Box score says Finlandia shot 36 percent, but it felt like 8 percent. They must have poured it on after I left with four minutes to go. Oshkosh was playing dudes I've never seen out of warmups, with six minutes remaining.

Anyway, Matty and DJ combined for 44 points on 18-of-27 from the floor, including 6-for-9 from 3.

UWO made 10 3s and shot over 50 percent from the field but only got to the line 12 times. That'll happen when the game is over after two minutes, I guess.

If anyone cares about such things ... from the Where Are They Now? files: Former UWO players Nate Miller and Tim Dworak from the 2003 Elite 8 team are coaching at Omro High School. Nate is the head varsity coach and Tim is Nate's varsity assistant and the head JV coach. Both are in their first years in their current roles.

After running a slow-down game with UCLA flex cuts for about 20 years, Nate has brought a pressing, up-tempo style to the sticks. It appears it's a large learning curve for the kids. Omro is scoring a lot more, but Nate's record is just 2-6 and the team is averaging about 25 turnovers at a school that is used to contending for titles while winning 42-37. It doesn't help that Omro moved to the newly formed Eastern Valley Conference, where it is the only D3 school among some very good D2 teams.

Tim's JV team was on the wrong end of this buzzer beater, which was SportsCenter's Top Play of the night and TSN's #2 Play of the Week a couple of weeks ago. Even with that crazy loss, Tim's team is 6-2 (I think).

That ends your Oshkosh Where Are They Now? and Omro basketball history lesson  :D. Just thought one person might like to know what Nate and Tim were up to these days.

Well, according to the live stats, Whitewater was beating North Central 88-78 with 12 seconds left...that was 15 minutes ago.  I'm sure as I type, the CCIW has something on it.  The Warhawks were up by 18 at half.

Greek Tragedy

Well, the holidays are over so it's back to the Conference Grind with a scattering of nonconference games left in the regular season.  It seemed like everyone took a loss during the break, meaning every conference loss will be that much harder to swallow come tourney time.

1. Stevens Point (9-2, 1-1):  The Dawgs stumbled out in California, though Cal. Lutheran did sport a 8-1 record coming into the contest.  The loss was probably unexpected considering they knocked off #5 Augustana on the road in their previous outing.  After packing their bags for 5 straight games and 7 of their last 8, Point gets some much-needed home cooking with 5 of the next 6 conference games at Quandt.

2. Whitewater (9-2, 2-1):  The Warhawks forgot to show up for their first game in the St. Norbert tourney and surprisingly lost to West Region foe St. John's.  They rebounded tonight by topping CCIWer North Central.  Whitewater's travels will be tested with three straight conference games on the road.

3. Oshkosh (9-2, 3-0):  The only undefeated team in the conference gets a big test right out of the gate as they head to Quandt this weekend.  Things don't stop there with Platteville coming into town and then a three-game conference road trip after that.  We'll see how their short bench reacts to the conference grind.

4. Platteville (8-3, 2-1):  Technically, the Pioneers came out of the holidays unscaved because their loss to Point Loma Nazarene was against the #10 NAIA team.  We could also call the Pioneers the Road Warriors as they go on the road for three in a row to Stout, Oshkosh and Point.  Ouch.

5. Eau Claire (7-4, 2-1):  So far many will argue that the Blugolds are the surprise team of the year.  Their only holiday loss was also against a NAIA foe, so come NCAA time, that game "won't count".  With the likes of the much debated "Early Season Freshman of the Year" Ryan Shea and Dan Beyer, among others, games will be interesting against them.

6. La Crosse (6-5, 1-1):  The Eagles started the year off pretty well, but the wheels seemed to have fallen off with Brandon Brown's injury (how serious is that??).  They lost 3 of 4 games over the holidays after starting out 5-2.  They make the long trip to Superior this weekend before hosting Whitewater.

7. River Falls (7-5, 1-2):  Despite losing Koonkaew for the year, the Falcons should be feeling good about themselves because they've run off four games in a row and prior to that, they lost by just one to Platteville.  They continue to adjust with LAK (Life After Koonkaew, of course) as DiJon Reese has looked good recently.

8. Superior (4-6, 0-2):  Not sure what to think about the Yellowjackets.  I don't know how serious Dan Culy's injury is.  They probably won't stop anyone, but they'll score with the best of them.  They could gain some momentum with La Crosse, Eau Claire and Oshkosh visiting "Canada".

9. Stout (3-8, 0-3):  Well, Stout hasn't been home since Dec. 5th, and they haven't been well-treated as guests, losing all four games, including getting smoked at Oshkosh.  Coach Andrist has some magic to work and he'll be able to do that at home with Platteville, La Crosse and Point visiting in the coming weeks.
