Wow. Interesting to see the Superior-Whitewater game from the Whitewater broadcasters' points of view.

I was sitting behind the bench, and I didn't hear anyone from the bench calling for anyone to "get" anyone else. Buchanan coached just about the way he always does, pretty quietly. He does his talking during time outs. I'm assuming he may have questioned a ref's parentage or eyesight, but it must have been a pretty quiet exchange.

Guess I'll have to watch the IFan archive to see what the guys across the court saw...and heard.

I watched the game on IFan and their announcers where happy that the crowd was told to stop with the noise makers. This group of fans ran down under the basket and made noise and jumped up and down while UWW was at the freethrow line. As for hearing what was said from the UWS bench, I heard nothing over the broadcast. While Miller has had his moments while walking the sideline, I doubt that he would say what he did if he didn't hear it. The play was rough and the big issue was the lack of trips to the free throw line for UWS. They hadn't had a call go in their favor for the first 30 minutes of the game. Even the IFan announcer was making a case for UWS and the lack of trips to the line. Hill was ejected when a foul was called on him and he made a comment. The coach was given his T right after that. I would assume it was in reference to Hill's fouls and T and the lack of calls going his teams way. I believe in a coach standing up for his players and applaud what he has done at UWS. Let's hope he really doesn't want his players to hurt the competition.

Whitewater is 2-0 without Perry this year.

No they're not.  They lost to Platteville last Wednesday.

Minor detail  ;)

I know, but I just couldn't let it slide through that easily  :)

What surprises me is that a broadcaster as decorated as Mr Downtown is would slip up like that. :D ;)

Quit being a homer.....I have heard and seen worse at HIGH SCHOOL GAMES!  I think I can speak for most on this board and say that Buchanan is MUCH more even keeled than Miller.  Aside from Combs, I can't think of a bigger spaz in the conference.  I am totally unbiased on the issue being from EC.  I just call it like I see it.....Buchanan has done wonders in his short tenure at Superior.

It should be noted that Coach Combs has made a considerable effort to not be so spastic when coaching.  In fact, one game I thought he was so upset, cuz all he did was sit in his chair.  Turns out that was him trying to relax a little.  There may be talk soon in Pioneer Country of going the same route as Mike Deane, and use a seat belt to keep him in check....or not  ;D

I can let it slide once, and only once darn it.  It's not quite like Digger Phelps two weeks ago on College Gameday saying that "I love what Bo Ryan has done down at Kansas," while they are showing clips of the Badgers.  Next time I'll really get after him.  ::)

*Slaps Forehead*

Wow, how did I totally forget about Platteville!?!?

Okay, so Whitewater is 2-1 without Perry. My bad. They still should be 10-2 before they face the Pioneers again.

Cody-1-Kastern

Suspensions???  The people that should be suspended for this is the officials.  I hope WIAC Commissioner Gary Karner reviews the game tape.

Janesvillebb,
You say that Superior players aren't tough enough to be brutal....I agree with that, they are not a physical team.  Whitewater was a more physical team, yet the foul count was WW-16 and Sup-28.

How did this whole thing get started?  Dwight Hill drove the lane and got his shot blocked, not by the guy that was guarding him, but by the helpside defender.  When the shot was blocked, the guy that was guarding him, who didn't block the shot started smacking his chest and yelled "Get that S*** out of here!".  Which was loud enough for many of the fans to hear.  So why did the officials not stop the game there or T-up the UWW player for doing this???

Then the next Hill comment.....results in an ejection.

Buchanan did nothing that any other coach in the conference hasn't done this year....Question an officials call....results in an ejection.

Now, I didn't hear or see anything about "hurting players or taking players out"  but I know Coach Buchanan very well and this doesn't sound like something he would say or do.  I talked with some Superior players about that, and it was news to them too.

However, Whitewater was the better team, and at the point of the game when the ejections happened (Hill's) 35-61 and (Buchanan's) 45-77 Whitewater had the game easily wrapped up.  They are an impressive team, and I would have liked to seen Perry and King play.  None the less, the Ejections probably had little or no impact on the final result.  I hope these teams meet up in the WIAC Tourney.

Janesvillebb....Next year at this time that freshman intermural team contending for a conference championship.

My dogsled just got back to Whitewater from Superior.  The dogs took a wrong turn in Eau Claire.

I've been reading the various posts in regards to the "overly enthusiastic" UW-Superior students that were banging that stupid trash can less than 10 feet from where I was sitting.  A couple of things that were talked about in the radio broadcast on Saturday.
#1  The students were asked by the game officials (prior to the game) to refrain from banging on the trash can during game action.
#2  Failing to adhere to the above, the officials went to the scorers table about halfway through the first half and gave a formal warning to stop or a technical will be assessed.
#3  No technical, but another warning was issued in the second half.
#4  Buchanon assessed his first technical.
#5  With the crowd getting more and more incensed, the team seemingly did likewise (not sure who was feeding off who)
#6  Superior's Dwight Hill was assessed a foul with 11:55 left in the game - his reaction resulted in a double technical on Hill and ejection. The official play by play does not list a second technical on Coach Buchanon - but he also left at this point.

The UWS students were REALLY fired up.  It was the loudest I have ever heard a crowd in Superior. I just think Superior (fans and team) really entered the game with the idea they could beat UWW.  They almost did in Whitewater earlier in the season.   I think frustation both on the floor and in the stands took over.

Superior has a very good YOUNG team, they started 4 freshmen and a sophomore against UWW.  I just hope the excitement stays - they deserve it.

Hate to tell you this, but the Beargrease sled dog race went UP the north shore not DOWN Wisconsin. I'm thinking you won't be finishing well in that race.

Badgerwarhawk-

I was referring to the crowds in a high school game.  However, I have played in more than a couple of high school games where multiple technicals were called.  They usually take place in high stake (i.e. conference championship) games where tensions are running high.  I have been to MULTIPLE state tournaments where FVA schools as well as other larger D1 schools have student sections that chant profanities after questionable calls and anyone who reads this knows the chant I am talking about.  There were many games where I felt like I was walking into the pits of hell because I knew the opposing crowd was going to be out of control and near the floor.  Rip me for my opinion if you would like.  I don't really care.  But I will stand firm when I say that Miller is a spaz.  You don't need a further example then his post game comments.  As for Combs, a seat belt would be a nice touch!  :D  Good for him on working on his outbursts this year!

Mr. Downtown

What a way to start the second half.

With 7 games left to go, and knowing that there is a lot of basketball left to be played, but also seeing a lot of basketball I took a look into my crytsal ball, which is always fuzzy for some reason.

Currently, we have the following teams in order of tiebreaker

1. Platt
2. Osh
3. WW
4. SP
5. Lax
6. EC
7. Super
8. RF
9. Stout

Taking a look at the remaining schedule, and making my picks, I discovered a very interesting scenario. Before that though, I think that these are the biggest games remaining in the WIAC, and could change the landscape.

1) 1/30 = Oshkosh @ Platteville

2) 2/13 = Stevens Point @ Eau Claire, Whitewater @ Platteville

3) 2/16 = Whitewater @ Stevens Point

3) 2/20 = Oshkosh @ Whitewater

4) 2/23 Season Finale = Stevens Point @ Platteville

At the 12 game mark, this is what I think the Standings will look like=

1. Platteville         10-2
2. Whitewater      10-2
3. Oshkosh           10-3
4. Stevens Point     9-3
5. Eau Claire           6-7
6. La Crosse           5-8
7. Superior              4-9
8. River Falls            1-11
9. Stout                    1-11

Oshkosh loses to Platteville on the road.

The next 4 set of games on paper doesn't bring a lot of drama to the WIAC. After 2/9, things get interesting

1) Despite starting 6-0 at home this season, I think Platteville will drop their final two home games to Eau Claire and Stevens Point

2) Eau Claire will once again pull off an upset @ Zorn, beating Stevens Point

3) Oshkosh will win the games they are supposed to win, but dropping two crucial road games to Platteville and Whitewater

4) Outside of the Oshkosh win at home, Whitewater will lose two biggies on the road, to Platteville and Point

5) Superior started the WIAC with a 3-3 record. They will finish with a 4-12 record.

6) Eau Claire will finish with a + .500 mark in the WIAC (9-7)

7) Stout will beat Superior

8. River Falls will beat Stout, knocking the Blue Devils out of the WIAC tourney.

My Predicited Final Standings
Platteville          12-4
Oshkosh            12-4
Whitewater       12-4
  Stevens Point    12-4

So, how do you split the WIAC conference title four ways? Almost half of the conference will get to say in 07/08 we had a share of the conference crown.

However, with the conference tournament, here's how the tiebreakers would work.

Platteville 4-2 against Osh, WW, SP
Oshkosh  3-3 against WW, SP, Platt
Whitewater 2-4 against Osh, SP, Platt
Stevens Point 2-4 against Osh, WW, Platt

Platteville gets the #1, Oshkosh #2

Then next on the list for tiebreakers, would be the record v.s. #5, Eau Claire
Whitewater 2-0
Stevens Point 1-1

Whitewater get #3, Point gets #4

1 Platteville
8 River Falls

4 Stevens Point
5 Eau Claire

3 Whitewater
6 La Crosse

2 Oshkosh
7 Superior

My predictions of how it will all end up

Platteville over River Falls
Point  over Eau Claire
Whitewater over La Crosse
Oshkosh over Superior

Second round
Oshkosh over Whitewater
UPSET: Point over Platteville

Setting up: Point @ Oshkosh

At least with my imagination, I don't think this past Saturday's match up was the last time that Oshkosh and Point faced off at Kolf.

And Oshkosh wins again, 73-60, and again, Point will never had the lead in the game.

WIAC teams in the Tourney: Oshkosh (Auto), Point, and Whitewater both with 6 losses

Snubbed: Platteville, with 7 losses

I hate to say it but I think Platteville has the best row to hoe.   Their schedule is favorable and they probably have the best inside/outside combination in the league.

Badgerwarhawk-

But I will stand firm when I say that Miller is a spaz.  You don't need a further example then his post game comments.

Having watched Miller coach for the past 6 years, I have to say that he has calmed down quite a bit this year. I do believe that the conference warned the coaches to behave this year......may have been their reaction to the UW-Plattville coach rushing the officals after the UWW/UWP game at the end of last year. As for Miller's comments. He had some time to think before he made them so he must have felt strongly about what he was saying. I am sure he was vocal during the game but the officals have learned to block him out based on his reputation. Unless someone has the UWS coache's comments on tape ( I would love to hear them) we may never know what was said. No one got hurt and that's what's important.

badgerwarhawk

Bench decorum was a point of emphasis with WIAC officials this season.  I don't know if it's a broader NCAA thing or not though.  But it is in our league at least.
