You guys are giving me a good point of emphasis for our  Western Wisconsin Sports Sat. Show this Sat.  It occurs to me that I will be at the Chi Hi/EC North HS game tomorrow night.  Because there will be many WIAC coaches there including Buchanan, I would guess, I plan to ask him about the wild goings on up in Sup. last week and ask him to come on our show.  I will also make a contact with a WIAC official and talk about the new "Point of emphasis" this year.

Maybe it was the refs fault that UWW outrebounded Superior 55-36.  Warhawks highest rebounding total in a game since 12/5/98 vs. Stout.

Don't know about that.   Whitewater did a nice job of blocking out so Superior didn't get second chance shots.  They also did a good job offensive rebounding.  Whitewater was a better rebounding team, I don't think the refs had much to do with that.

I think rebounding has been a Superior weakness all around. Too often, shooters are turned and headed back down the court before the shot has actually missed; no follows, too many players lagging around the perimeter; just bad position all around. I thought they looked a little more involved during the Whitewater game.

Lots of little things to be ironed out.

Back to the unending discussion of the Whitewater-Superior game: the ref had a pretty intense conversation with Goodwin and Miller right after Hill got ejected. It lasted too long to be a simple, "let's get back in the game," and the ref was doing all the talking. I  wish I could have read lips.

The seat belt trick only works for so long. Unfortunately right before ESPN ran that piece on Coach Deane he was T'd up twice and ejected against LIU on Jan. 17th.,their only conference loss. Still knowing Coach Deane the belt has probably served him well.

Sounds like a wild night in Superior.  I don't understand why the refs didn't have the kids with the trash can ejected when they failed to follow league rules.

La Crosse has two nice wins since Coach Keobl was ejected in Platteville.  Maybe he lit a fire under some of the guys!

Have any of the guys up in Superior-land heard if indeed Dwight Hill is suspended for the Yellow Jackets Wednesday night game against Eau Claire?

I heard that actually the day after the piece aired.  In that game though Wagner was outshot from the freethrow line 43 to 8.

PointSpecial:

I think the main point for the bench decorum this season is the coaches actually being out on the floor and not in the box.  Some places, like Karges, there is not a whole lot of room, so if the toes are out there I think they let it slide.  Guys like Jack Bennett, ahem, had their coaching box extend to the three point line from the sideline ;D  So I'm sure at looking at how coaches were creaping out on to the floor, that was the reasoning for the emphasis this year.

I know some have maybe questioned the intensity of Coach Combs and Coach Miller, but I dont.  They are two guys that played on successful teams, and are uber-competitive.  They coach like they played, and probably learned from their mentors in coaching.  As I said before, Combs has settled down a bit this year, but most of his actions on the sideline are in communication with his team (waving hands, stomping on the floor, shouting).  As all coaches do, he may ride the officials.

I think the day a coach doesn't get after the officials a bit, or doesn't want to communicate with his team has already missed his day to quit the job

Oddly ( :-X), there hasn't been a great deal of talk about Saturday's game around where I am. I suspect a lot of the details were being worked out yesterday--WIAC official offices not being staffed on Sundays, most likely.

Basketball furor is kind of a new concept to many, here, too. Had any of this occured at a hockey game, the place would have been abuzz with discussion. I talked to many people who had no idea there was a game, much less that there might have been drama.

Althought earlier I did now I don't think Buchanan will be suspended.  Koebel's actions were a lot more intense than his were.  He went after the referees.  Hill I'm not sure about.

Koebel actually wouldn't leave the gym.  He waited at the door for a minute or two, and his assistant coach had to get him to leave.

OshDude

Between the men's and women's games at Oshkosh on Saturday, the UWO AD and assistant AD placed yellow tape to clearly define the coaches' boxes. Semling and TVD both looked down when they approached the lines to squat or talk to officials or whatever. Don't ask me why I notice such things, but I did notice that from time to time after I saw Ackerman and Sims lay the coaching lines instead of some other staffers.

I read that to mean someone asked/forced them to do it since the taped lines were not there for the women's game. To me that little evidence means bench decorum is indeed a major point of emphasis this season.

Mr. Downtown

I imagine that is going to become a rule in the WIAC that tape will be placed on the floors on the court so coaches know exactly the size of the box.

I totally agree... but interestingly, regardless WHERE the coaches have been (for the most part) the technicals and ejections I've seen have much more been due to comments made as opposed to where on the floor (hehe) the coaches have been.

Now, of course, there are plenty of examples where the coach is way too far on the floor (3 point line, free throw line, etc, where there's been a T called) or lobbed certain props onto the floor (Bobby Knight and that unfortuante chair), but these are much more rare (thankfully for the character and integrity of the game, but unfortunate for the entertainment factor it provides).  I think the point is to try to take the spotlight away from the coaches and put it back on the players.

Not sure if this relates to garbage cans, but I think it was last year, three Point fans stood behind one of the baskets and pounded on a keg...that was "silenced"...

Greek Tragedy

Congrats to Brandon Brown for this week's POTW!, also for Geoff Probst last week, I think I forgot to mention that...

I think it's very satisfying for Brown to get it considering his past injury and to bounce back!  Nice job.

Weekly Release

RANKINGS

1. Platteville [7-2] (LW-3):  Big win at Whitewater and holds off Stout.  The Titans come to town and then a tricky game in River Falls coming up.

2. Oshkosh [7-2] (LW-4):  Loses a tough nonconference game to an underrated Lawrence team and then completes sweep of Stevens Point.  Revenge on the mind heading to Platteville and a trip to improving Stout.

3. Whitewater [7-2] (LW-1):  First loss A.P. (After Perry), but rebounds and smokes Superior up in Canada.  Big game against surging La Crosse and a trip against possibly the 2nd best big man in the league, Dan Beyer, and Eau Claire.

4. Stevens Point [6-3] (LW-2):  Takes care of a pesky Eau Claire team and then loses for the 2nd time against Oshkosh.  Trip to River Falls looms.

5. La Crosse [4-5] (LW-7):  Welcome back Brandon Brown!  Confident Eagles head to the Warhawks before Superior comes in.

6. Eau Claire [4-5] (LW-5):  Holds tough against Point and then gets ambused by Brown and Co.  The Blugolds will try to rebound against Superior and then head to Whitewater on the weekend.

7. Stout [1-8] (LW-9):  First win for the Devils against Superior and then holds tough against Platteville.  Plenty of time to prepare for Oshkosh this weekend.

8. River Falls [1-7] (LW-8):  Falcons fall to the Eagles in their only game.  They play host to two of the big dogs this week, Stevens Point and Platteville (blew a big lead late against the Pioneers last time out).

9. Superior [3-6] (LW-6):  Superior self-destructs against previously winless Stout at home and then gets hammered by Whitewater, also at The Hive.  Pack the bags to Eau Claire and La Crosse this week.
