I agree with you. I was happy the WIAC decided to return the baseball tournament to a campus
Am I missing something?  I know the 2008 WIAC Baseball Tournament is scheduled to take place in Wisconsin Rapids again.  The Midwest Regional is at Oshkosh, but even that is "off-campus" being held at Oshkosh North High School's EJ Schneider Field.

Did the WIAC decide to "non-renew" their contract with Wisconsin Rapids for seasons past 2008 and I just missed it?

Same thing for Oshkosh to be "hosting" the National Championships, when its in Appleton.

How they don't have lights at Oshkosh is beyond me. But that's more of a baseball post then basketball.

Then again, I believe my brain is still thawing out, so I'm out of b-ball topics.

No, you're not missing anything. I'm just stupid and wasn't thinking about which tournament I was referring to. You're right.

I'm thinking the biggest reason it's at EJ is because Alumni Stadium still doesn't have lights.

Well, seeing that you are Cubs fans, I'll have to excuse your lack of baseball knowledge. ( I kid I kid... :D ;D)

The White Sox DO have an American League rival, The Minnesota Twins. Believe it or not, I HATE (strong emphasis on HATE) the Twins more then the Cubs.

I live in Chicago, Mr. Downtown. I've been to games at the Cell when the Twins are in town. Trust me, the South Side does not boil over when the White Sox play the Twins. It doesn't even simmer to tepidity. There isn't one-tenth of the hatred towards the Twins on the South Side that there is towards the Cubs.

On the other hand, if you go to Wrigley or to Busch on the day of a Cubs/Cards game, the antipathy is palpable. The fans of one team relish their hatred of the other team, and insults and harsh words flow freely. That's a big reason why Cubs/Cards ranks right up there with the Yankees and Red Sox and the Giants and Dodgers in terms of baseball's great rivalries. White Sox and Twins? Not even on the radar.

Quote from: Mr. Downtown on February 11, 2008, 09:19:34 AMPlus, The Cell serves Miller Products. Enough said Wrigley, enough said.

So what? Wrigley serves Anheuser-Busch products and Pabst products (Old Style, which like all Pabst beers in the U.S. is actually brewed under contract by Miller for the Pabst Brewing Company). That means that Wrigley serves two varieties of crappy mass-produced swill, whereas the Cell only serves one variety of crappy mass-produced swill. A pretty dubious victory, but on behalf of Cubs fans I'll take it. ;)

The installation of lights, field turf and a new scoreboard at Prucha Field is scheduled for this summer.  It's going to look pretty sharp after that.

I suspect sports venues at the various campuses (campi?) reflect revenue (hmmm, venue, re-venue. A coincidence? I think not). Improvements follow the money, whether it's ticket sales or booster club. Thus, UW-Superior has the drier section of a swamp for a soccer field and new ice-making equipment for the hockey arena.

In traditional bass-ackward logic, the UW-Superior administration used as supporting logic for renovating its fieldhouse and student center that it would attract more students to the campus. We all know prospective students and their parents put a lot of emphasis on how the fieldhouse and student center look. At the same time, no one bothers to pick up the garbage cheerily blowing about campus.

Mr. Downtown

I don't care what anyone says, I've played baseball for 15 years of my life and coached 3 years of little league. Night baseball works, and I don't know why the WIAC doesn't take advantage of that.

You know how many people (city folk and students) can make a mid-afternoon double header on Wednesday's when the baseball stadium is by the football stadium where you have to cross over a the Fox River on a bridge that is under construction.

I'm sorry, thanks to Jarrod Washburn for donating $500,000 to the facility, but Oshkosh spent it the wrong way.

For those that know the area, I still think Jones Park in Fort Atkinson is a better venue to watch and play baseball then most of the schools in the WIAC.

That is until Whitewater is done with the upgrades, which I've seen while going to play disc golf in the summer. Oshkosh better hope that this Sports Complex is going to be done soon (and well) or they won't have the best facility in the WIAC that they were hoping for.

Oh, and the Softball diamond still looks more like a prison softball field then a college diamond.

Anyways, I made my pick'em selections for the week, and man I struggled. Anyone else get the feeling we could see a lot of upsets this Wednesday??

Mr. Downtown

Mr. Sager, you're right. Chicago White Sox fans that are/live from Chicago hate the Cubs more then anything.

For me, I hate the Twins more then this weather.

Jones Field is a nice park with a so-so diamond that drains poorly.  The tree overhanging the left field line is a tad out of place too.  But I like the old style bleachers, reminds me of something out of the 1920's.   ;)

My last Cubs/White Sox post...until March.

Cubs fans across the US, this could be your next President!

If Boston can have a huge wall in left field, Fort Atkinson can have a tree hugging the foul line.  ;D :D

You couldn't be more wrong......

First of all, if the rest of the WIAC doesn't have lights, they aren't going to let UWO play night games even if they have them.  Since you played ball for fifteen years, you should know how much different it is to pick up a ball out of the pitchers hand at night compared to daytime.

Secondly, the locker room at Alumni Stadium is better than most Minor League Baseball stadiums.  I can't even begin to tell you how much of an advantage that is in terms of recruiting.  The set-up out at Tiedemann is first class from the playing surface (arguably the best in the WIAC) to the dressing room.

I would challenge you to find one better..... and I am solely talking the baseball part, not figuring in track, football/soccer, or softball.

Well Whitewater made the jump up two spots to #2 in the country.  Stevens Point is up two spots as well at #9.  Platteville makes a big move up #16  ;) but not nearly as big as the Titans, who held steadily at #24.

Pretty excited for the game tomorrow night.  Whitewater, I'm sure is bringing a fan bus, and their cheerleaders.  I also would imagine the Madison news stations being present as usual, but this year there are some big implications of the game.  #1 in conference being the main implication at this point.

I'm wondering though, if Platteville beats Whitewater...again...  :D how the voters will look at that.  They've won 9 of their last 10, including Whitewater and Oshkosh twice, but losing to Point.  Been in the top 25 for three weeks, currently have a 7 game winning streak and in this time have moved 5 spots.  It seems any of the teams in the top 10 can lose two of three and remain in the top 10.

I know rankings at this time of year are really of no importance, because the only ranking that anyone cares about it the one they receive the "Bronze and Walnut."  It's just semi-frustrating as a fan, to see you're team not getting some more votes when they're playing well.

Mr. Downtown

So cubs, why is the WIAC allowing Whitewater to have lights?

Jones Field is indeed a nice park.  The outfield is a little sketchy, at least when I played on it three years ago, but nonetheless a nice park.  It's a SHAME EC doesn't have a team because Carson Park would be the crown jewel of the WIAC!
