A couple of points that I took from last night's OSH @ UWW game...

UWW impressed me most last night the way they beat Oshkosh. McKay obviously stole the headlines, but it was the Warhawks' defensive effort that really stood out to me.  Holding Oshkosh to 51 points and 30% from the field was an outstanding effort.  It was team defense that held one of the nation's top 3-point shooting teams to 4 of 21!

Whitewater currently has the 3rd best scoring defense in the conference at 64.5 ppg.

I'm also sooooo happy for the Warhawk win after the radio announcer for Oshkosh absolutely trashed Whitewater a couple of weeks ago on the Saturday morning sports show (which is terrific) on WMEQ (880 AM).  His basic theme was that UWW didn't belong with the other three confence leaders at the time. That their weren't enough basketball to go around for UWW.  They don't want to play defense. His comments stunned not only me!

I'm sick of these kind of characterazations of this year's team - they don't deserve it.

Also congratuations to Pat Miller's team picking up it's 20th victory of the season, his 5th 20+ win seasons in his 7 years as UWW's head coach.  His two "off-years" his team's won 19 and 18 games. Not bad for taking over for a coaching legend in Dave Vander Muelen.

In WIAC (WSUC)history,  head coaches with at least 5 years at the helm - Pat Miller, with a .735 winning winning percentage entering the current season,  trails only Bo Ryan, Ken Anderson and Jack Bennett in winning percentage.  Not bad company to be keeping!

Congratulations to Coach Miller and top assistant, Todd Skrivseth, on the job you guys are doing.

Thanks, Voice, for the compliment about our show.  You make a great point about your WW program and Pat Miller.  I, too, have been guilty of buying into that unfair stereotype of Pat Miller, the guy with all the talent but won't get it done in the end.  Your "Voice" of reason is something that I respect very much.

Conference Seedings (If the season were to end today)

Tiebreakers: Stevens Point is 1-0 vs Platteville, Whitewater is 1-1
River Falls beat La Crosse, who is ahead of Superior, giving them the advantage over Stout

1  Stevens Point  12-3
8  River Falls        3-12

4  Oshkosh         11-4
5  La Crosse         6-10

6  Superior          5-10

2  Whitewater      12-3
7  Eau Claire         5-10

Left Out: Stout

Now, the scenario's for Saturday:

#1 Seed:
Stevens Point can be #1 with a Win
Whitewater can be #1 with a Win AND a Stevens Point loss
Platteville can be #1 with a Win AND a Whitewater loss
Oshkosh cannot be #1 seed

#2 Seed:
Whitewater can be #2 with a Win AND a Stevens Point Win, OR a Loss AND a Platteville Win AND Oshkosh Loss
Platteville can be #2 with a Win AND a Whitewater Win
Oshkosh can be #2 with a Win AND a Platteville Win AND a Whitewater loss
Stevens Point cannot be #2 seed

#3 Seed:
Stevens Point is #3 with a Loss AND a Whitewater Win AND an Oshkosh Loss
Whitewater is #3 with a Loss AND a Oshkosh Win
Oshkosh is #3 with a Win AND a Platteville Win AND a Whitewater Loss
Platteville is #3 with a loss AND an Oshkosh loss

#4 Seed:
Stevens Point is #4 with a Loss AND a Whitewater AND Oshkosh Win
Platteville is #4 with a Loss AND an Oshkosh Win
Oshkosh is #4 with a Loss
Whitewater cannot be #4 seed

That's the top 4 scenario's, if need be, I can pump out the bottom 4 if people are interested.

Pioneer Hoops Fan

Not much to report about last nights game in Platteville.  Seeing this Eau Claire team play, I have no idea how the Pioneers lost to this team.  They most certainly were not very motivated to be playing...in my amatuer opinion.  Gibbons subbed in the end of the bench, just under the 4 minute mark.  Apparently had seen enough.

Nice game by the Pioneers.  Fell asleep for a stretch in the first half, closed with a 19-2 run.  They way Eau Claire was playing though, this outcome should have been much worse for them.

Looking forward to Saturday evenings game and rematch with the Pointers.  Pioneers win, they get the #2 seed.

Mr. Downtown

Not holding out much hope that River Falls can win on the road?

From the Top 25 Poll Board

QuoteWith UW-Oshkosh losing tonight you got to figure their run in the Top 25, and the west regional rankings is done.  They have 7 losses on the season and 6 in the west region.

QuoteI've wondered about Oshkosh since their early losses to Defiance and Eau Claire, and have been surprised they have stayed in the top 25 for as long as they have, but... They redeemed their loss to Eau Claire, have split with Whitewater and beat Point twice. Augustana and Lawrence are ranked, and Defiance and Elmhurst are getting votes.

The most interesting thing to me without looking at their body of work, is seeing Platteville behind them in the poll when they have spanked Oshkosh twice!

Crazy ol' WIAC

I agree with these points. I don't think Oshkosh will be in the Top 25 even if they do beat Superior on Saturday, and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for Oshkosh to be ahead of Platteville, even despite the Pioneer's loss at Superior.

Then again, the Top 25 poll doesn't mean a whole lot this upcoming Monday (Sorry Pat) when the 1st round the WIAC Tourney begins.

Greek Tragedy

Mr. DT stole my thunder.  So, I just drew it up another way...possibly a little easier to read.  I think this is right as well.  Of course this could confuse you even more!  I came up with Point possibly being #2 even if they win.

   SP (12-3)      WW (12-3)      OSH (11-4)      PL (11-4)
1-1 vs WW      1-1 vs SP      2-0 vs SP      0-1 vs SP
0-2 vs OSH      1-1 vs OSH      1-1 vs WW      2-0 vs OSH
1-0 vs PL      1-1 vs PL      0-2 vs PL      1-1 vs WW

   2-3 vs other 3      3-3 vs other 3      3-3 vs other 3      3-2 vs other 3

Stevens Point plays Platteville, so obviously if one wins, the other loses.  Whitewater hosts Superior and Oshkosh hosts River Falls.

Scenario 1:  SP, WW, OSH win; PL loses
#1 WW (13-3):  They get the #1 seed over SP because they had a 1-1 record vs. OSH while SP was 0-2 vs. OSH
#2 SP (13-3)
#3 OSH (12-4)
#4 PL (11-5)

Scenario 2:  SP and WW win; PL and OSH lose
#1 SP (13-3):  SP was 2-0 vs. PL; WW was 1-1 vs. PL
#2 WW (13-3)
#3 PL (11-5):  PL was 2-0 vs. OSH
#4 OSH (11-5)

Scenario 3:  SP and OSH win; WW and PL lose
#1 SP (13-3)
#2 OSH (12-4):  2-0 vs. SP; WW 1-1 vs. SP
#3 WW (12-4)
#4 PL (11-5)

Scenario 4:  SP wins; OSH, WW and PL lose
#1 SP (13-3)
#2 WW (12-4)
#3 PL (11-5):  2-0 vs. OSH
#4 OSH (11-5)

Scenario 5:  PL, WW and OSH win; SP loses
#1 WW (13-3)
#2 PL (12-4):  3 way tie, PL was 3-1 vs OSH (2-2) and SP (1-3)
#3 OSH (12-4):  2-0 vs. SP
#4 SP (12-4)

Scenario 6:  PL and WW win; OSH and SP lose
#1 WW (13-3)
#2 PL (12-4):  2-0 vs OSH, SP 0-2 vs. OSH
#3 SP (12-4)
#4 OSH (11-5)

Scenario 7:  PL and OSH win, WW and SP lose (FOUR WAY TIE!)
#1 PL (12-4):  4-2 vs SP (2-4), OSH (3-3), WW (3-3).
#2 OSH (12-4):  3-way tie (PL taken out of equation); 3-1 vs. SP (1-3) and WW (2-2)
#3 WW (12-4):  1-1 vs. PL, SP was 0-2 vs. PL
#4 SP (12-4)

Scenario 8:  PL wins; WW, OSH and SP lose
#1 PL (12-4); 3-way tie with WW and SP; 3-1 vs. WW (2-2) and SP (1-3)
#2 WW (12-4):  1-1 vs. PL while SP was 0-2 vs. PL
#3 SP (12-4)
#4 OSH (11-5)

QuoteScenario 1:  SP, WW, OSH win; PL loses
#1 WW (13-3):  They get the #1 seed over SP because they had a 1-1 record vs. OSH while SP was 0-2 vs. OSH
#2 SP (13-3)

Oops. Thanks for catching my mistake Oldschool!

QuoteScenario 2:  SP and WW win; PL and OSH lose
#1 SP (13-3):  SP was 2-0 vs. PL; WW was 1-1 vs. PL
#2 WW (13-3)
#3 PL (11-5):  PL was 2-0 vs. OSH
#4 OSH (11-5)

OS, in this scenario you need to compare SP and WW to PL AND OSH combined as a third place unit.  Comparisons always are done by placing and not by seeding.  To do it otherwise would mean that difference between WW and SP depends on the outcome of PL vs. OSH, which is not logical.  So, the comparison between WW and SP for this scenario should look like this (assuming a win by EC over Stout):

- SP and WW split head-to-head (No advantage)
- SP was 2-2 vs. OSH & PL; WW was 2-2 vs. OSH & PL (No advantage)
- SP was 6-0 vs. LC, EC, & SUP; WW was 6-0 vs. LC, EC, & SUP (No advantage)
- SP was 4-0 vs. RF & ST; WW was 4-0 vs. RF & ST (No advantage)
- SP and WW tied on WIAC Road Record at 6-2 (No advantage)
- Coin Flip

#1/#2 SP (13-3)
#1/#2 WW (13-3)
#3 PL (11-5):  PL was 2-0 vs. OSH
#4 OSH (11-5)

We are almost certainly going to be one and done in the conference tournament, but I hope we can get two or three teams in this year.

Tournament Tiebreaking Criteria
The following tie-breaking criteria will be applied to determine entry into the tournament or to seed teams with identical records:

1. Head-to-head competition between tied teams.
2. Cumulative Won/Loss record vs. teams placed higher in the conference standings.
3. Record vs. teams in conference standings in descending order (i.e., #1 seed, #2 seed).
4. Team with the best road record in conference games.
5. Coin toss conducted by the WIAC commissioner.

Just Bill,

My understanding would be this...and my translation, I guess.

Platteville and Oshkosh would tie at 11-5.  Platteville would win that tie breaker with Oshkosh because they beat them head to head.  Thus, Platteville would be 3rd and Oshkosh 4th.

Whitewater and Stevens Point split, so they would go to #3, record vs. teams in decending order (i.e. #1 seed, #2 seed, #3 seed)

Point would be 2-0 against the #3 seed Platteville, while Whitewater was only 1-1 vs. Platteville, hence, Point getting the #1 seed.

Maybe I'm reading into that wrong.  I'm no expert.
