QuoteThe Warhawks caught a break when Superior called a timeout in overtime it did not have

I'm OK with this; logically, Hill figured he was going to lose the ball. Results likely would have been the same, other than a T getting slapped on the bench. Same destination, different route.

Hill played a great game...in hindsight, he should have just forced a jump-ball or flail around and hope to draw the foul.  Giving up 2 points already down 2 with under a minute is tough to comeback from, but oddly enough, they still got a decent look a three that could have tied the game. I am a Warhawk fan, but I was hoping, for Hill's sake that he would have hit that last 3 to tie the game.  Tough way to end the season for him and his teammates.  Good year for them.

From the front page:

UW-Whitewater had a relatively easy time in its WIAC quarterfinal on Monday but got a battle from fifth-seeded UW-Superior on Wednesday before pulling away to a 77-73 win. The Warhawks caught a break when Superior called a timeout in overtime it did not have, when the game was 71-69 with 57 seconds left.

OUCH!

Hill was trapped in the near baseline corner.  It looked like Hunter had tied him up but he got the time out first.  He was either going to be tied up or lose possession on a five second count.  You have to appreciate the intensity of the moment too.   It was real drama.

Rather than talk about the players missing I'll mention a few who played in their place.  First there's Billy Kolinske inserted into the starting lineup to replace King and seeing more minutes than he's seen in any other game this season he responds with a double/double 13 points, 10 rebounds, blocks 4 shots and gets 2 steals.  Then there's Cory Brezovar helping to fill the shooting guard minutes that Goodwin took up.  After a pair of three-pointers which jump started the offense in the Stout game he does the same thing last night and adds another three-pointer the team rallys around in the second half.   Brian Hunter only plays 10 minutes but he gets a basket, three rebounds, an assist, blocks a shot and probably defended Hill better than anyone else who tried.    Phil Negri also hit a three-pointer, had 3 rebounds, an assist and two steals.  McKay, Koski, Vernon all did their thing and we don't win without it.  But these other guys are making a significant contribution and without it we probably don't win either.

Defensively Hill was a load to handle.  He's so quick off the dribble.  For one stretch he was nearly unstoppable.   Curly got 13 points but was only 1-5 from beyond the arch.  As a team Superior was only 3-15 and never really got their three-point game going.   Jake Smith has a bright future in this league.

I don't know how the two teams managed to stand afterward.  Everyone looked exhausted.

Rising, you should be pleased.  I was very impressed with the crowd Superior brought last night.  It was unlike any that I can recall seeing/hearing from Superior.  They were loud and into it.  Afterward I overheard one elderly lady mention that she was part of a four generation Superior family in attendance.   Superior really looks to be headed in the right direction.

Also, thanks to Pioneer Hoops Fan on keeping me informed on the Whitewater game.  I appreciate the updates and hope you have some kind of text messaging plan! lol.  :D

Not a problem.  Don't worry, the wife and I get unlimited texting.  Otherwise I'd be looking for you address to send you a bill  ;D

Can Buchanan coach the women's team too?

Not really.  You can't defend free throws.  I was thinking that WW would get two free throws AND the ball, but I guess that isn't the case.  You turn the ball over and play solid D and hope to get a turnover yourself or a missed shot.  So, not really the same destination, IMO.

Hill was stuck so deeply into the corner that it was like he was being guarded by four players, two real ones and the two black lines on the floor.  Had it played out I suspect we'd have ended up with the ball on either the alternating possession or five second violation.  Whatever he did he was pretty much toast.

The technical foul rule is different in college in that after the free throws the ball reverts to the team that had possession prior to the technical being called.  In this case that was Superior.  Superior is also granted the additional time out even though it was excessive.   So we took the time out, shot the free throws and then went back to the corner and Superior inbounded the ball.

In my scenario, Hill falls out of bounds or tries to pass, gets intercepted and the steal ends up as a lay up. I don't know who had the possession arrow, but if Dwight didn't know they were out of time outs, he probably didn't know who would have gotten the ball in a tie up, either.

I'm figuring that at the point of the trap, Superior was doomed. Lose by two or four, it's still a loss. I don't know how much time was left on the clock at that point; I guess enough, because after the shots, didn't Culy go down and make a lay up?

But, yes, you're right; there was a possibility of tying up the game, once again had the technical not occurred. I would have been less forgiving if the coach had called the time out. As it was, Hill had performed enough heroics; I can't fault him for losing track of TOs left. The thing that tipped the scales was that I WAS LISTENING! I accept full responsibility for the loss.

Well, hindsight is 20/20, but a lot of times you see guys throw the ball of the defenders legs (or a classic high school State game, the defender is on his back lying out of bounds and the SPASH player-Tom Johnson-is falling out of bounds and whips the ball at the defenders stomach! lol)...

Anyway, congrats to Whitewater on the win and congrats to Superior for being such road warriors and knocking off Oshkosh twice and nearly beating Whitewater.  I hope Superior doesn't revamp their team like they seem to do every year.

When are the all-conference awards handed out, anyway?

I think Culy did make a last layup to finish up.  didn't get to watch the whole game, just listened to the end and watched most of the overtime (on my way home from the Williams Center, worked out pretty well because I wanted to get score update before I left).

Is it pronounced Culy or "Cooley", the anouncer's kept saying "Cooley".

Yes, we all hope here in WW land that Superior is going to build on this season and this run in the playoffs...not.  I do wish them luck but it was a fun game to watch and unfortunately I will not be able to watch or go Saturday when all the rabid fans come out because they wait until the end of the year or a championship is on the line to actually scream and chear.  But hey, at least they come.

GO HAWKS.  Illinois sucks.

I've heard coolie and cully; I've always used the coolie pronunciation--'always' being since the season started. He has a brother (I believe) playing for the Rice Lake HS now; I'm wondering if Buchanan has his eye on him, too.

I'm glad it was a good game. I've always thought a game decided as much by the clock as by the players is worth winning or losing. Another 15 seconds, and who knows what might have happened. those are great games.

FYI,

It was Dave Headly that scored the last layup as the time expired, not Dan Culy.

I'm not sure why it really mattered.  Do they want the Point fans to be able to listen both games?  Why didn't they just have the men's game scheduled for 7 pm to begin with and then have the women at 3 or 7, depending on if one school hosted both finals?  Seems strange to me that the outcome of the women's game would make a difference.

BTW, I know this is the men's board, but the women's game down in Whitewater was a great game...even though the Warhawk fans won't agree with the Pointer fans! lol...oh yeah, no tickets available for the men's game when I was at the women's game tonight.
