Point plays tough D again for the victory. Allowed very few open looks to the Falcons. Very tough to get the ball in the paint against them despite the fact that no one is over 6'5" who plays significant minutes. Disappointed in the refereeing in this game, with way too much hand checking going on on the outside. I seem to recall that just a few short years ago there was an emphasis on stopping the extra contact outside??? Jon Krull will be a consistent threat for the Pointers this year, but there appear to be four excellent freshmen that will contribute. El Amin is a terror on D and I think he will lead the league in steals this year. He was matched up against a 6'3" guard for most of the night and more than held his own. Beamish will be a very good player and reminds me of Nick Bennett with his long arms, range (Not quite the same knuckleball jumper, but not alot of rotation), and toughness inside. WW next week will be a great game!!

Went to the women's game, then left at half of the men's game...

As one who was a Blugold during the Terry Porter years - and if you don't know who he is, look him up!  ;) - and living in Point for the last 15 or so years, watching UWSP and following the 'Golds and the conference from there, I have a feeling it's going to be very painful to watch the 'Golds this season...

the announcers for lax in lacrosse were complaining about how barton traveled blatantly everytime he touched the ball and squared to the hoop........were they going overboard or was it pretty easy to see?  I just say this because in all my times listening to lax radio they are homers but usually if something isn't called they back off but they were pretty persistent all game on jesse barton of ec traveling

Jared Barden...

Well, let's just put it this way. I definitely saw the Blugolds get away with at least one travel.  ;)

laxeagles1: From reading your posts, I know you attend the games. But, as I posted in the women's forum, you need to get you and your buddies, and all their buddies, too, into Mitchell Hall to support these teams!

They're having good seasons, and are fun teams to watch.

How did an all-conference kid from Chippewa Falls McDonald, Joe Werner, end up in La Crosse when he's in UWEC's back yard???

frodotwo,

Sounds like you go to the Point games.  You should introduce yourself to BanditUWSP and I sometime.

As frodotwo posted, another solid game defensively by Point.  They held River Falls to 20 first half point in route to a 14 point lead.  Point never led by less than 11 in the second half and basically controlled the whole game.  There were some ticky tacky fouls, I'll agree with that.

Beamish had a great game, going for 18 and 5 rebounds.  Coach Semling mentioned on the postgame show that "because of his physique" Rortvedt will probably play less minutes in the 2nd game of the week (i.e., Wednesday, Saturday games) and we'll see more of Bryan Beamish.  Rortvedt, according to coach, seems to tire a little come the weekend game.

Most of the talk is of the lone returning starter in Jon Krull, and he is definitely the leader of this team. But, more emphasis has been put on Bauer (again, according to Semling) to look for the shot.  And, of course, Hicklin is a key as well.

Like Frodotwo mentioned, Point's freshman are really playing well. Rortveldt starts and plays well, though he had a quiet night tonight (he played 38 minutes on Wednesday), El Amin is a very quick guard that is first off the bench.  He can shoot the ball, make the steal and is very confident with the ball in his hands.  Beamish is also a solid player off the bench, as shown tonight.  He has been the 2nd player to come in.  So, three freshman playing a lot of quality minutes is very impressive.

I think a lot of fans and the coach are grateful with the opening schedule.  The kids get their feet wet with two home games to open the conference schedule.  They win both of them and get a lot of confidence going into their first road conference games this week, two very tough games at Whitewater and La Crosse.  Like me, the players are gaining a lot of confidence in this team and with the signature defense they still play and the mix of veterans and freshman, among other players, Point looks like the real deal despite losing who we did from last year.  Very impressive thus far.

bulk19,

Joe Werner wasn't highly recruited out of high school. In fact, I believe he did not play his freshmen year in college as a student. Either way he has put on some big muscle weight since his senior year in high school along with some great work ethic, he has made himself into an elite WIAC player. Kudos to him.

UWEC unfortunately frequently misses out on a handful of players around the area that have turned out to be good college players.

frodotwo

I usually make all the home games OS, sitting on west side 4 rows up south of  reserved. Usually make a few road trips as well. Clarke College tourney reservations already made.

Yeah Bardon from EC does travel quite a bit when he gets the ball his pivot foot was staying on the floor but it slides all over the place even when he just stands their.....none the less he did have a pretty good shooting nite and took the ball to the rim very well.........Werner had a spectacular dunk to start out the game he recived the ball at the 3-pt line and drove by his defender looked like he was gonna lay it in and just put it home.......EC is going to have such a tough year they have no one who can play in the paint at all Birkel seriously the worst player to watch play ever he cannot play basketball at all......Beyer will not go and play in the post and he seems kind of like a baby......and Vetterkind is only 6'4 and is a tweener....In the Leader-Telegram it said Eau Claire only had 9 paint touches in the first half :o
