Can anyone tell me the whereabouts of Dan Tillema?  He left UM-Duluth at semester last season and enrolled at Oshkosh.  I was told that he had all intentions of playing basketball there.  Is he still in school?  If so, why the change of heart playing ball?
He just decided not to play basketball this year.  Ironically he's rooming with John Henney a transfer from Platteville who is on the UWO team!

UW-L Falls at Winona State in Exhibition

For Immediate Release: Saturday, November 8, 2008

Winona , Minn. – The UW-La Crosse men's basketball team fell 79-76 at Winona State University Saturday night in an exhibition contest. Winona State, the defending NCAA Division II champions, is ranked ninth in the National Association of Basketball Coaches Preseason Top-25 Poll.

Tony Mane led UW-L with 36 points, hitting 15-of-24 from the field, including five-of-seven from three-point range. He was also one-of-three at the free throw line while also finishing with four rebounds.

Derek Wilcox added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Eagles while Austin Scott finished with nine points, hitting three-of-six from three-point range.

UW-L shot 47.0% from the field, including 44.4% (eight-of-18) from three-point range. The Eagles were six-of-14 (42.9%) at the free throw line. UW-L trailed 42-33 at halftime, but outscored the Warriors, 43-37 in the second half.

David Johnson led four Winona State players in double figures with 16 points. Curtrel Robinson finished with 14 points while Travis Whipple had 11 and Josh Korth 10. The Warriors shot 38.9% from the field, including 35.0% (seven-of-20) from three-point range. Winona State was 30-of-38 (78.9%) at the free throw line.

Here is the box score of the game.

I was at the game ... Mane was on fire the 2nd half ... He simply couldn't miss.  He was launching shots from 5 feet behind the arc.  Winona State tried guarding him with 3 different players ... eventually going with a bigger stronger athlete.  Mane did not score the last 3 or 4 minutes of the game as I thought he got tired and there was so much keying on him.  He also missed a 3-pointer with 17 seconds left that could've won the game.

Kincaid played well and is going to be a player for UWL although he didn't score much.  Their big guys were in fould trouble most of the game.

Two observations about UWL
... They MUST develop alternative scoring to Mane.  (a) they stood around too much waiting for him to score and (b) if he's on the team is on if he's not, well ...
... Second point is their bigs really didn't look that good and appears to be their weakness this coming season.

Old School.....The Pointers had 15 on their roster, of which only 12 suited up and played.  The Gold team had the "starters" which were El-Amin, Moses, Sweeney, Beamish, P. Rortvedt, and Wotachek.  The Purple team had Flynn, Schumacher, Ritchay, Roberts, Krull, and Brezinski.  Missing, but on the roster, were Griffin, Jenkins, and Hurd.  Interestingly, the game was very tight the whole way.  Sitting behind Coach Semling behind the north basket were Hoelzel, Greg Knox, Brian Bauer, Jon Krull, and, I think, Hicklin.  To me, Ben Schumacher really played and shot well.  I'd have to agree with everything "fro" put in his game review.
Tomorrow at 6 PM is the first of 4 monthly 1 hour broadcasts from The Hilltop.  Coach Semling and several players are interviewed, with the coach likely giving his season's preview.  If anything is newsworthy for Pointer fans, I'll post it.

UWEC played them even in the 2nd half after trailing by 29 at the half.  EC shot well throughout the game, however had quite a few turnovers.

Thanks for the more news, Bill.  Missed the game because spending quality time with my mom and wife.  I'll miss this weekend's opener because, alas, more committments with the wife (wow, this sucks! LOL, just kidding, honey...not that she reads this).

I definitely won't disappear from the Quandt scene, but being down in Brown Deer now and actually living with my wife, time is a little tighter now!

All I was able to hear of the game on the radio was the last 9.6 seconds.  Had a city-league game @ 4, and unfortunately had to officiate the game right afterwards.  Congrats to the Pioneers.  I'm sure having first "outside competition" on Friday only helped on Sunday.  Especially when you consider who they played on Friday night.

Hopefully they can stay somewhat grounded after winning a game like that.  Very excited for their opener on Saturday.  I will have a nice little Saturday planned as my wife's team has a scrimmage on Saturday morning, then it will back to Williams Fieldhouse to watch the Pioneers on Bo Ryan Court.

Should also be interesting this season seeing how Coach Koebel will develop his team, as I think it is great they played with Winona State.  I'm also really interested in how UW-Whitewater will fare against Wisconsin tomorrow night.

"David Johnson scored 16 points ..."

Wow. I first read that David Johnson scored 16 in the La Crosse game, I thought "how does La Crosse's SID find time to play?" David, you're going to give Kennan a run for the money for the SID Player of the Year Award.  It's the same David Johnson, isn't it? :)

The Oshkosh-St. Norbert's game is being played at Kolf. The game is scheduled for 1 PM and the volleyball regionals are at 7 PM, so there's time for the switch-over for volleyball.

OS, luckily us older guys have used up most of our "commitments" and wives are happy to have us out of the way for extended periods of time (as long as we're back in time to mow or shovel or take out the garbage). My earlier post meant to say that Roberts resembles Hicklin (who was in the crowd) a little in looks and in style as well, as he likes to put up that 10-15 foot jumper. "Schu" did all of his damage outside. Brezinski was the only real inside rebounding force for purple, as was Beamish for the gold. Alas, Wotachek was only active on offense in the 8-12 foot range, not inside the paint. Post play will be a problem again this year I'm afraid.

The Badgers pull away down the stretch to win by a comfortable margin in a game that wasn't always that comfortable.

I was in the Nicholas Suite with other Warhawk fans tonight....McKay and Vernon had nice games...though McKay missed a couple of layups late in the game....Goodwin was shut down in the second half....the Warhawks played very tough defense and forced many fouls on the Badgers...the Badgers pulled away when they started to use their size...the Badgers were dominant on the offensive board in the second half...in the first half the Badgers were content to play a perimeter game with the Warhawks, but that was not so productive for the Badgers

Looking forward to the Warhawk season, I hope they get good production from their big men to complement the play of McKay and Goodwin
