During the '70s when Harlem legend James "Fly" Williams was scoring 30 a game for the Austin Peay Governors, the fans there had one of the best chants in college basketball history -- "The Fly is open, let's go Peay!"

That's good stuff.  I see kids getting told to shut their traps nowadays.

I have just a quick comment on the poll.  I see a few have voted for Superior.  That is great, and I respect your opinion, but after last year's surprise as Freshmen/Sophomores.  Are they really going to sneak up on anyone as sophomores and juniors?  I think that if UWP, UWW, UWSP were not so veteran laden teams, those young kids would be the cream of the crop.

I put this out there as more of a discussion point.  I most certainly do not want to offend anyone, but I'd be more surprised if they didn't do well.  As you maybe can guess, I voted for La Crosse.  I think they have a lot more unknowns, and with their performance against Winona State could make a couple of upsets.  I'm sure many things will have to happen to do so, but there is quite a lot of time to figure that out.

Ya know, after voting for Superior, I looked at it again and wondered about La Crosse... but the poll asked which would be the biggest surprise, I honestly wouldn't be too surprised if La Crosse did well.  They've been pretty good pretty recently... but I think the expectation for Superior is that they'll always be on the bottom, even in the years that they're not AT the bottom of the conference...

From today's Oshkosh paper:
"The WIAC is the best I've seen it in about eight years," Van Dellen said. "I think Whitewater and Platteville might be in a class of their own."

I agree. Should be a fun year.

That makes little sense to me.  If the WIAC, as a whole, is the best he's seen in 8 years, how can two teams be in a class of their own?  Wouldn't the WIAC have to be down for two teams to dominate?  I guess TVD could be saying the rest of the WIAC is awesome while Platteville and Whitewater will go 24-1 with their single loss to each other.

I think the WIAC champ will have at least 4 losses.

Read the Around the Nation article, didn't know Langenfeld was out for the year.

Greek Tragedy

Well, not a good weekend to have a birthday party for my wife's godmother's brother's daughter.  Got that?  In Greek tradition, godparents are a huge part of her life and is as much considered part of the family as the immediate family.  Now that we've got our Greek lesson our of the way...

There are 4 local games involving WIAC games that I probably would've normally tried to attend!

St. Norb's at Oshkosh at 1 pm
St. John's at Stevens Point at 7 pm

La Crosse at Carroll at 4 pm
Wisconsin Lutheran at Whitewater at 7 pm

Oh well, I'll get my weekend in the future! lol :-)

Along with those four openers, Viterbo is at Platteville, Buena Vista at Stout and Superior at Martin Luther on Sunday.  Who are your picks?

I think the most competitive game is La Crosse at Carroll.  I wished this game was at 7 pm because I would've made it after the birthday party.  Whitewater, Platteville and Superior should have comfortable wins.  Oshkosh and Point could have their hands full while Stout could lose to Buena Vista, an NCAA tourney team last year, though I don't know who they lost from last year.

You are only as good as the people around you.

If Superior is successful this year, it will in no small part be a direct result of Dave Buchanan's relentless efforts. The basketball team hosted a fund-raising dinner at the beginning of November, and I THINK (therefore, I am) players and/or coaches may have hand-delivered tickets to campus people who bought them. At the dinner, players fanned out and sat at tables to interact with diners. Good turnout; over 200 tickets sold.

I have to believe he played a part in getting free season athletic passes to faculty and staff at UWS in order to get butts on the bleachers. He sends a monthly newsletter to those who have been included in the distribution list. He sends out notices about the weekly lunch for coaches and fans. I don't think UWS has seen this much energy put into anything; it's been an incredible pleasure seeing that kind of enthusiasm, and it makes me a little more enthusiastic, too.

The exhibition game against Winona was 38 minutes of "My god, we could pull this one out!" and two minutes of, "If they'd only made those free-throws..." I'm pumped for the season; hockey (for me) has become the game to go to when the basketball team isn't in town. No doubt about that.

Of course, what better "job" can I have than spending quality time with my wife?

You set a good, low line. Four might be right on the number, but I'll still take the under. I'm probably the only one who would.

EDIT: That would be a good early poll question this year: Overall losses for WIAC champ.

SNC 66
Oshkosh 62  FINAL

Saint Norbert shoots over 50% from the 3-pt line (12-23) and commits only 8 turnover's (compared to UWO's 16.)

The two headed monster of Marsh and DSA score 45 of the Titans 62 points, shooting 18-24 from the field and 3-3 from the 3-pt line.  Miller however struggles, going 3-10 (2-8 from 3.)

It's appears it will be a LONG season again for Miller, Marsh, and DSA as they play 40, 38, and 38 minutes respectively.

In that case I'll take the under. For a lot of money.

SNC is very good. Guards were money, especially Dowden. But everyone on the floor was a shooter. Don't think UWO led all day (EDIT: box score said two leads – 2-0 and 4-3). Whenever it got to 2-4 points, SNC seemingly always made a dagger 3.

DJ was called for a questionable offensive foul with ~ :45 left. That leaning basket would have tied the game at 62. SNC iced it with FTs.

Don't think UWO had a fast break all game. SNC had only two FB opps if I remember correctly. DJ was hit with two early fouls but played through without any worries.

I know it's only the first game, but I think someone besides the Big 3 needs to shoot a few more times. Not a lot more, maybe just another 2-for-5 combined shooting from the others ... Henney hit a big jumper late and Kretsch fired a few 3s early, but even if they're bricks someone needs to keep the D honest. Doubles and triples will come anyway, but it's easier to do when the other team knows you won't shoot or penetrate.

A new UWO set that was run a couple times today: everyone get the F outta the way and watch DJ score. Maybe it wasn't called, but it was very effective. Man, that guy is fun to watch. Even more so when, on an iso, he goes through four defenders for a layup.
