Plateville 58-45 over RF, but it wasn't that close. RF down by 32-25 at half, had only 29 pts. w/8 minutes plus left in the game. P led by 26 before they threw in the shock troops. Pioneer perimeter d stifled Falcon offense second half. Pioneer qickness apparent. Falcon sluggishness also apparent. Long season ahead for RF, by the looks of it.

I cant spell"Platteville" and "quickness," evidently. Oh well, you got the message.

Stout wins its Super Bowl at Oshkosh;  I wonder what TVD said to the press this time?

Gee, that's 3 "Super Bowl" winners this year against Oshkosh this year! Stout, Platteville, Point, Whitewater and maybe La Crosse are fully capable of beating each other from what I've seen, heard and read so far this year. Winning on the road is a must to be the WIAC champ and Stout did just that. They were the better TEAM on this night.

Champ99

I would like some help here... I saw Nate Severson's name in the Osh/Stout box score.  Wasn't he off the team last year for one reason or another and I guess he is back now?  Anyone have the story?

stoutguy

I'm not going to get into what this coach said and what that coach said, but I will say that as I watched that Stout game on Sat., I saw two very good basketball teams and I really believe that the best team won.  Stout is disciplined, athletic, unselfish, well coached, and even though they are also young, they all have at least one year under their belt.  I have not heard much about Stout on this board but I'm sure Eddie likes where he is at and it will take a very good team to beat him.  I can't wait to see another conference game.  They are all going to be very fun to watch.  Stout is now officially "in the mix".

stoutguy

The story is Nate Severson decided that he missed basketball last year and he is back and has been giving Eddie some nice minutes off the bench.

Mr. Downtown

there really isn't anything to say to the media on this one

Two terrific shots by Capelle and Chandler. Especially Chandler...

congrats to Stout on the great victory.

The WARHAWKS took the lead at about the 17 minute mark, shot 50% from the floor in the half and stretched the lead to 16 points, 50-36 when it ended.  It didn't get much closer in the second half before it got stretched way out of shape and ended up at thirty, 88-58.

Mike Toellner led four WHITEWATER players in double figures with 16 points.  Anthony Mlachnik added 14 points, Melvin Willliams 12 points and Rob Perry 10 points.  Twelve WARHAWK players scored points in the game.  Andy Freund returned to the line up and pulled down 8 rebounds as the team dominated the boards 41-29.   WARHAWKS commit a season low 8 turnovers to Superior's 24, that's a lot of extra possessions and 17 of our 29 baskets were assisted which is relatively solid ball movement.

Leonard Cobb was really the only offensive threat for Superior and he got 23 points on 19 shots.  He tended to throw up a few bad shots but without any one else scoring I guess he has to.  He had one 3 pointer that was probably a good 5 feet beyond the arch.  Tyler Hildebrandt hit three straight 3 pointers in the first half, went to  bench and only played 18 minutes of the game.  I don't presume to know their talent better than their coach but I would have ridden that hot hand a bit more.  Though I don't think it would have mattered as far as the outcome.

Thanks to Superior for agreeing to the delayed starts.  It had to make their bus ride home afterwards a longer one but their cooperation was very much appreciated.

Strongest conference, top to bottom? Yes, the WIAC is clearly that, OS.  "Toughest and most balanced"?  Not so much. What do you mean by "toughest", anyway?

I know I'm just wasting my time in replying, but I can't resist...

This is the toughest, most balanced conference in the country with the best teams, from top to bottom.  That INCLUDES the bottom, namely Superior, which you mentioned in your retort to playdefense:

Anyway, getting back to more important things.

Swampgoon and I headed over to La Crosse for the game on Saturday.  I know it's a little late to post my game report, but I put 570 miles on my car this weekend and just got home about 2 hours ago.

A very nice road win for the Pointers.  La Crosse has a very solid team with good guards and a stud-in-the-middle named Joe Werner.  I was very surprised they didn't just feed him the ball all night.  Point really didn't have an answer for him.  Even though dunks only count as 2, he did have three nice "get the crowd going" dunks.

Both teams started off pretty hot and then Point really turned it on, as La Crosse went cold.  It was 22-21 with about 5 1/2 minutes to go and Point finished with a 12-3 run to take a pretty comfortable 34-24 lead into the locker room.

La Crosse cut it to 5 with 11 1/2 minutes to go, but Point pulled away and lead by double digits for the last seven minutes of the game.

Great game by Bauer who has really been given a free reign on shooting.  He had 15 at the break and finished with 20.  Four of the five starters for Point finished with double-digits with Krull adding 13 and Hicklin and Rortvedt chipping in with 12 each.  Hicklin and Krull didn't have great shooting nights, so it was nice to see Bauer come through and after starting slow, Rortvedt finishing strong.  Note to Rortvedt:  All because you are open from 24 feet out doesn't mean you have to shoot it! lol.  At the beginning, he really forced some shots but settled down.  Believe me I really like the guy.

The big surprise was the contribution by freshman Jerome Wotachek, who for the first time, played significant minutes that didn't mean coming in at the end for garbage time.  He came in and had some big offensive rebounds and scored some nice baskets.  He finished with 6 points and 6 boards (four offensive) in just eight minutes.  Very nice.  Bryan Beamish also played a lot of quality minutes and had a nice no-look pass to Krull(?)...

I'm very impressed with Point.  Great passing, only 8 turnovers this game, solid off-the-ball movement and a more than expected (in my opinion) 3-1 start of the conference season.  Having three wins against perennials Oshkosh and Whitewater (tough road loss when the lead basically the entire game) and a solid La Crosse team, along with River Falls is a nice start.

old school,
It would have been nice to run into you but heck the days of 200 at mitchell are long gone.  The girls and guys are something worth looking forward too.

I was disappointed that lax went away from werner early in the 2nd half.  If they had gone to him early i think the game might have gone different.......i hope you didn't miss his early game facial, it was awesome....... I don't know if point is a better team than lax but lax was really outhustled in this game......nothing more to say on that..........your getting a first here, it wasn't coach koelbl's fault

also, if point gets shawn lee back this year they will have that guard off the bench to take some load off of hicklin...........bauer had a great game, he doesn't have any physical qualities that resemble an athlete but he gets the job done, i thought he did an adequate job on warner.........the tin of grizzly did well in the middle against joe werner

the girls team of lax was fun to watch, they don't have a standout player but they play some very good team ball, i was impressed

is there any hope for oshkosh?  that has to be disappointing but it still is early and anything can happen in the WIAC

Yeah, I was gonna run over to the other side, but your description (something like black jacket, glasses, midrow in the student section) didn't help too much.  When I looked over, there were about 50 guys with black jackets!  Oh well.  And yes, there was a very nice crowd there.  I think the boxscore said over 800.

I only missed the first couple of minutes of the women's game.  So, yeah, I saw it.  It was nice.  As far as I know, Shawn Lee is taking a medical redshirt and you won't see him on the court until next season.  I think BanditUWSP or Point Special can confirm this, but I think that's the case.

Point has guards to help out Hicklin.  El Amin seems to only play if the matchup is good.  He's a nice player, so it depends who we play and when, I guess.  Both Beamish and Rortvedt are also capable of bringing the ball up, as is Krull, someone who does it often, even with Hicklin in the game.  I have no worries about ball handlers on the team.

I wouldn't be too worried yet...They lost to a 3-1 (conference, of course) Point team on the road and a 4-0 Stout team at the buzzer.  Well, ok, maybe a little worried!
