Just looked at Superior vs Whitewater stats and was absolutely astounded that we started three bench players; missing in action: Culy, Manor, Hill. Superior might have been more competitive with those three? I would think so. A normal third string player, Birman, seems to have been one of the strengths of yesterday's game. I think there's more talent on the bench than gets to be shown. Did Manor and Culy get injured in Menomonie? I saw a couple of players wearing ice bags Friday morning--must have had the early practice. It was a day when ice bags seemed to be redundant. But, ice bags aren't really a sign of injury; casts and boots are signs of injury; and glazed-over eyes, I guess.

In hockey, Superior men seemed to have the game in hand at 2-1 over Stout with half a minute left in the third period. Must have gone complacent, because Stout whistled a shot past goalie's ear at 27 seconds remaining. After 5 minutes and 27 seconds, they all kissed their sisters and went home. The only consolation: we were in bed by the time Stout bus got to Spooner. You have to get your consolation where you can.

After yesterday's UWL loss to UWEC, I attempted to find out what, exactly, is the problem with this team. Based upon talent, size, and depth, I believe this team to be far better than last year's team - which finished 6-10 in the Conference. As you may recall, I posed this question on the board recently, and appreciated the responses I got from a couple of fellow posters. They opined that a lack of senior leadership and the loss of Brandon Brown may be the root cause of the apparant underachievement. In addition to disappointing the faithful, the team has caused a more cosmic problem - i.e. my going to Hell in the 'Pick 'em competition. I find this explanation to be more satisfactory than any alternative I can conjure. I asked several people in Mitchell Hall, any of whom may well have inside knowledge, and got unanimous confimation of my view that the team should be better. No one, however, offered any explanation. Even chmarx didn't know. Today's LaCrosse Tribune (see local sports on their website) informs us that Coach Koelbl does not believe the talent level is the problem. The paper quotes him as saying "I think the deeper issue is attitude" The article indicates that players will be evaluated on this issue, and that some may not return to the team next season. No individual is singled out for criticism.  Also, while talking to people after the game, I am told that Brandon Brown is not likely to return from academic suspension. This is not official iformation, however. Lastly, the common view here is that T.J. Nehring has been a good replacement for Brandon at the PG slot. I know the broadcasters feel this way as well.

Regarding pvegas account of the technical fouls -- this is all hearsay from a Milwaukee media guy I chatted with yesterday.  His story was that the Pville students were calling Goodwin FAKER during the game and when he drained the three he turned to them and said, "Fake You!"  If true, one could see how the ref would make the call.  However, the second one seems a little strange if the guys take on it is true.  According to what he knew, the tech on Miller was not called by the ref he was chatting with but by the ref across the gym.  Again,  all this is hearsay.

Of course, the other story is that Pville player Shaw's father was a WIAC official for a long time.  I don't know if that is true or not but if it is, I hope his former official friends and partners aren't influenced by their former relationship.  Just thought I'd toss out some food for thought.

This is true.....  Dave Shaw was a long time WSUC/WIAC official, however I doubt this has ANY relevance as to why the technicals were called.

The second tech happened during the middle of the free throws, while Shaw was in the process of shooting. I honestly missed that second call because i was watching Shaw and from my vantage point couldnt see both the WW bench and the opposite free throw line at the same time. My account is according to one of the Plt asst coaches immediately following the game.

Regarding the first one, however... we were yelling 'FAKER' (because Goodwin ended up on the floor a few times because of incidental or no contact and was pleading his case for the foul call).

If thats what goodwin said, i certainly could see how a ref could mistake that call....huh. I never thought about it that way!   :-\

Well, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on the question of late referee calls.  I've always believed that the refs should call what they see, whether its the first or fortieth minute.

On the La Crosse thing, it sounds like there are problems in the locker.  I suspect that Coach Koebl will correct them, but this season is probably lost.

chmarx, Brian Carroll, Phoenix Rising--do you guys have any access to the coaching staffs at Lax or Superior? It looks to me like you don't. Otherwise, why the  speculation  on what's going on?

If the puzzles you guys pose about the two teams were happening in RF or Menomonie, the answer would be more apparent because stoutguy has access to the coaches, and so do I. Maybe the fact that Culy, Manor, and Hill scored a total of two points among them vs. SP in their 44  point loss at Superior is related to their disappearance from the roster two games later. And all three of them got plenty of minutes vs. SP. Culy and Manor did  not do very well vs. Stout either, and Hill does not get into the boxscore. Maybe Hill's absence is still injury related. Also, the sports info guy at Superior has no game stories, or at least I could not find any, on the Superior site.

Are there any basketball booster clubs in either Lax or Superior? There is not in RF. I'm not sure about Menomonie, or about that kind of support in the other WIAC cities. It seems there's an information void related to the Lax and Superior programs. But maybe it's better this way: it's great soap/hoops opera!

Wanted to make sure I read that right.  They are still on the roster, but just didn't show up in the boxscore...BIG difference! lol...

And, if their efforts in the Point game resulted in their disappearance TWO games later, why didn't it happen the following game against Stout where both Culy and Manor started and played extensive minutes?

None of the three Superior players were dressed to play.  All three were in street clothes.   It was my understanding that their absence was injury related though I didn't take the time to check it out personally.  I'm sure that the game would have played out differently had they played but not as certain that Superior would have prevailed.  The WARHAWKS played pretty well.

I've already been gently "chastised" for shooting off my mouth on this site, so, no, I do not have access to coaches.

Really it's just nice to have some one from Superior posting on a regular basis.  For whatever reason that hasn't always been the case and when it has the person usually quits posting long before the season is over.  So I don't really care whether they have access to the coaches or not.

The people who haven't been chastised for shooting off their mouth on this site are probably in the minority

As BW said, it's nice to get a posting on a regular basis from a Superior fan, so don't leave us!

I've been thinking about this "access to coaches" comment and wondering just what a coach is going to say if I DID have access--"Well, yes, we have been on a down-slide, but that's because Player A hasn't been holding up his end of the bargain; and Player B, sh*t, I never should have recruited his lazy ass..."

I'm thinking about the best I can do is observe and then try to figure out what's going on. Conjecture is a great thing; I don't have to worry about facts getting in the way.

So, I'm happy to hear that the three non-starting starters were at the Whitewater game even though they were in street clothes. That means they're on the team and will likely be back in the near future. I still have hope the Supers will regroup and put together a memorable and respectable finish.
