I think in any other year, WW would get automatically in if it was just PV and WW or SP and WW or just two dominant teams, but 3 dominant teams in one conference, haven't seen that before.  And maybe WW on the road would be good since the last two appearences ended at home in disapointment.

GO HAWKS

The NESCAC has sent three teams to the tournament.  Although, the competition and strength of teams in the Northeast is less than the West.

The NJAC, the UAA, and the WIAC have all sent four teams apiece to the tourney at least once.

Just saying it's no gimme, it will be interesting if they do get in to see where they end up....cuz I don't know how strong other conferences are and all that strength of region type stuff that the D1 always talk about (RPI, etc.).

Greek Tragedy

When ww4ever said that, I think he meant in the WIAC...two dominate teams, not three.  I could be wrong!

palum,

I think in the past, the NCAA has tried to avoid 1st round match ups of conference foes... there has been times when far west teams have played each other because the NCAA was too cheap.  I think a couple of years ago, CMS and Oxy played each other in the first round...but in this area, I don't think you'll see a WW v PL, WW v SP or PL v SP in the first round.  I don't even think you'll see that in the 2nd round.

WIAC matchups early in the tourney have happened... the most recent I can find is '98: Platteville played Oshkosh in the 2nd round.

Since then the NCAA has been splitting up the WIAC teams in the bracket so the earliest they would meet would be the Sectionals. Maybe they have learned their lesson, but who knows how the pairings will line up with 3 teams in instead of 1or 2!

I hope ypur right Old School but I remember a P-ville Osh match up, a P-ville SP match up & a P-ville WW match up where a guard from WW got hot from 3 pt land & all these happened in the 1st & 2nd round.  With no research into seedings & brackets I could see P-ville, WW, SP & St Thomas in a Sweet 16 weekend in the Twin Cities.  We could have WIAC invasion of Minnesota  :) party on  ;)

Update when results come in.

I left out the regular season records so it fits.

RED means they have lost, regular season/conference tourney is complete and they are Pool C eligible.

BLUE means they have won the Pool A bid and have been removed from the regional rankings.

I don't think they invited 60 teams to the tournament back then though, so I'm sure it was more difficult to try and avoid such matchups than it would be today.  With that said, I also hope it works out that all the teams can avoid each other right away.

Boston 1113

I think that Platteville will pull out a close one today at Stevens Point. As long as Skemp stays out of foul trouble, Platteville will dominate the low post play and the guards for each team will offset each other. Louis Hurd will have to play a great game in order to

Whoever does win this game should get a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

Point/Platteville will be a good matchup on Saturday.  Anyone planning on making the trip?

I was planning on making the trip to Point but then realized I need to graduate. Darn studying. Have a great trip and enjoy the game! Oh my god, it should be a good one....

As much as I hat Whitewater, I agree they should get in!

Did Pat Miller really say this, and if so, where is the link?

64 teams in '97... LINK

In that year, Platte beat Oshkosh in round one and Point beat Platte in round two.  We used to watch some game film of that game to get us pumped up for big games... Point had to fly out to California and play Pomona-Pizter in round one, then go to Platteville.

Here's the WIAC NCAA history... I'll highlight the WIAC vs. WIAC games...

'92 Platte beat WW (second round)  (Platte had first round bye)
'93 Platte beat WW (second round)  (Platte had first round bye)
'94 Platte beat WW (second round)  (WW had first round bye)
'95 Platte beat WW (second round)  (first NCAA tournament with 64 teams.  I believe teams had to pay their own way in the first round of "play-in" games)
'96 WW beat Platte (first round)    (64 teams, WW, Platte and Oshy all made tournament)
'97 Platte beat Oshy (first round) Point beat Platte (second round)  (64 teams, Point, Platte, Oshy and WW all made tournament)
'98 Platte beat Oshy (second round) (Platte had first round bye, now a 48 team tournament.  May have been the first season of Pool selection)
'00 EC beat Point (Elite 8)

Prior to '98, the selection of tournament teams was different to what it became and to what it is now.  In fact, the tournament used to look quite different.

From 1975-1978, there were 14 first round games (with 2 byes).  To my understanding, these were played at centralized Regional locations.  There then was a Regional championship (Like our current Sweet 16) and also a Regional 3rd place game.  I don't know where the Quarter Finals would ave been played... perhaps at the Championship location?  30 teams.

From 1979-1988, there were 16 first round games (got rid of the two byes), placed at centralized Regional locations with Regional Championship games and Regional 3rd place games.  36 teams

In '89 and '90, there were 8 first round games (essentially a play-in), 16 Regional/Sectional Semi's (they changed the name in '90) with Regional/Sectional Championship games and 3rd place games.  40 teams.

From '91-'94, there were 8 play-ins, 16 Sectional Semi's, no Sectional 3rd place games.  40 teams.

From 95-97, there were 64 teams.  As I mentioned, I think that the teams had to pay their own way for the first round... but maybe for the whole tournament.  I don't remember the full context of the conversation that I had about this, or even who it was with (Coach Bennett maybe?).

In 1998, the Pool system started, with Pool A's (Auto-bids from qualifying conferences), Pool B's (At-large bids for teams from conferences that don't get an Auto-bid), and Pool C bids (general at-large bids).

From '98- '05, there were 48 teams, with 16 first round byes.  The first two rounds were played at the higher seed's gym with the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 being played at Sectional locations (ex. Puget Sound hosting in '04 and Point hosting in '05).

From 06-08, there were 59 teams, 5 first round byes.  The first and second round games were played in regional pods, with the exception of the first round games of teams who would be playing against the "bye" team in round two.  Those were played at the higher seed.

This year, there are 60 teams.  The format will continue as last year's did, with regional pods and the Sweet 16/Elite 8 at Sectional locations.

Prior to '98, the selection was different than this current Pool system.  I think there may have been a certain number of bids per regional (thus the Regionals), but I don't know how those were selected.  Also interested would be the Regional 3rd place games.  In one respect, I think they're kind of cool... it guarantees everyone who makes the Regional two games.  I can see how those games could be not so good, though, too.  In a game where you're not playing for anything other than the knowledge that this will be your last game of the year (or career for seniors), it may make you play really hard and leave everything out on the court... or it may feel like a bit of a slap on the face because you've got to strap it up with nothing on the line.  I don't feel this same way about the 3rd place game in Salem... and I think it would be good for fans who make the trip to be guaranteed to see two games.  This would especially be the case in a Sectional setting like Puget Sound in '04 where the hosts lost... or in '07 when Point lost to Wash U in the Sweet 16.  I can't find the stats (Hope and Wash U don't have the box scores posted and Point's website no longer does either... dead link), but I'm sure that 1000 people showed up for the Elite 8 game between Hope and Wash U even after WU knocked off Point in the Elite 8.  OS or Sac can probably give a better approximation, as I think they were both at that second game.

This would generate more revenue for the championships as well... if there are 3rd place games in the regional pods AND in the sectionals, that is 16 more games (12 second round 3rd place games, 4 less than the 16 total second round games because of the 4 first round byes we will have this year plus 4 3rd place Sectional games).  If/when we get back to the full 64 teams, it would create 20 new games and probably make more sense from an equality level (I can see teams complaining that they either play in the second round against a team on a bye or they go home... they don't have the opportunity for a 3rd place pod game because there is no pod).  I think that each of these games would draw about 1000 people... or at least average that many, and that is an extra 20,000 ticket sales.

This might be a bit generous...  Check out page 11.  Surprisingly, last year had one of the lowest attendance-per-game averages.

Just food for thought...  I had to occupy myself with something because I won't be able to listen to the Point/Platteville game.. I've gotta go to work in 20 mins!   :'(
