I am here to wish all you, even you guys who don't like me,  a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

May your balls be tacky and filled with air.  ::)

In 2006, hopefully OshVegas will get its act together and the LU train will keep on rolling.

With the students gone, only a small crowd was on hand to watch LaCrosse beat #23 ST. Thomas 55-45. The Eagles played a solid first half to lead 31-20 at the break, and then hung on against the Tommies. Joe Werner led the way with 14 pts and 10 boards. More importantly, he held UST's big man to just 2 points. La Crosse is now 9-2. Who'da thunk it ?

brian,

not me
i expected an improvement but not this.  i wasn't able to see the game how did they look as a whole?

bout time that rotation was settled down to 9-10 guys.  Lax hasn't had a rotation in the past 2 seasons!  it always helps when you have some idea when you are coming into a game

Hey Brian C-  a visitor to your board from next door on the MIAC board.  Congrats to UW-LaCrosse on a nice win.  Looking at the boxscore it appears it might have been a fairly physical game, with neither team shooting particularly well, & the refs not calling many fouls?

A couple of questions for you:  Does your big guy Werner play an athletic, physical style of ball?  If he's a legit 6-7 255 as listed on the roster, he's the type of player that could give the relative stringbean Isaac Rosefelt fits.

I also noticed your starting guards Conigliaro at 6-2 190lbs,  Ask 6-3 190lbs, & PG Fehrenbach at 6-2 180 are all pretty solidly built wings. If they're reasonably quick, strong & athletic, I'm guessing that's why the smaller UST guards had a poor shooting night & handling the ball.

When you combine the UW-L perimeter defense with Werner's post defense on Rosefelt, might explain why the Tommie post players had limited touches.  Rosefelt only had 6 shots the entire night.  Am I barking up the right or wrong tree?

Thanks for any comments & good luck the rest of the season.

i can't answer from being at the game and i know this is directed for brian but warner is a physical 6 7 255.  it's legit.  he is, imho, one of if not the most athletic player in the conference.........

Warner is definitely a stud.  Great win for La Crosse (and the WIAC of course) over St. Thomas.  A big win considering it's an in-region game against a solid MIAC team picked by many to win their league.  Now, La Crosse becomes the biggest St. Thomas fans so it helps their Quality of Wins Index, or better known as the SOSI!  ;D

Brian,

What were the differences in this game as opposed to the Point game we watched and talked about it?  I don't want to compare Point to St. Thomas here, but we both admitted La Crosse didn't play well vs. Point.  Thanks.

That would make 2 wins for WIAC teams over St. Thomas this year. The BlueDevils beat the Tommies in the Wooster Tourney 91-90 in OT back in November.

2 teams 45 miles apart travel 800 miles to play each other.  ???  :)

Allow me to enter the La Crosse fray if you will. I know it takes hard work and dedication to earn the respect of the "regulars" but I'd like to take a stab at analyzing the game at Mitchell last night.

First of all, Werner is a physical specimen (as you've all stated) and the kid from St. Thomas wasn't in his league, period. Had Joe played well offensively (as Koelbl says in the paper), he probably would have had at least 22 missing a couple open layups, too fired up. He had two big dunks, one on a fast break put back and the other on top of the big kid from. To see the one of the dunks (and then another that didn't count) head to www.wkbt.com, go to sports, and watch the highlights from last night.

I digress, I think the best part for UWL last night was that they didn't play that great of a game to get a nice win. Defensively they were very good. To be honest I don't think the Rosefelt kid is that great of a player. UWL doubled a little bit early but I think they learned quickly they didn't need to. Werner and Bemis chested the kid up and he always turns over his left shoulder, UWL took that away and he didn't have anywhere else to go. His athleticism will get him rebounds every night but I don't think he's particularly well-rounded offensively.

Cogniliaro and Ask played well and yes Palmer, the perimeter guys played physical and hounded the guards all night. UWL is not a team you want to come to play with only a six man rotation. They will keep waves coming in and wear you down.

Two huge games after break for UWL basketball (men and women) Stout on the first Wednesday and Oshkosh the week after. Can't wait.

UWO knocks off Aurora University (5-6) yesterday 75-63.  They were led by Andy Jahnke who scored 27 points, including 7-12 from behind the arc.

UWO now faces Wartburg College (7-1) tonight in Las Vegas.

Here is the boxscore from the UWO/Aurora contest.

You mean "regulars" as in posters?

If that's what you mean, it doesn't.  You already have it when you post.  It just takes those special posters to lose respect!  ;)

Mr. Downtown

Big game tonight for Oshkosh against #15 Wartburg

A win finally gives them that big win this team needs very badly, and a winning streak of 4 in a row. Perhaps this team is turning things around, and good timing with the conference season coming around in full force.

John Gleich

I think they key, as usual, will be Janke.  He's had some great games lately, and they've done well.

The interesting part to me about the game between LAX and St. Thomas last night  wasn't that LAX won, but how they held the Tommies to 34 points under their season average.

That is amazing!

It speaks well for the quality of defense in the WIAC.

It will be quite a defensive match-up when LAX comes to visit the BlueDevils January 4th.

Mr. Drake Palmer, Od School, et al:Thanks for your interest in the UWL-St. Thomas game. As Drake inferred, the refs "let 'em play" in the first half, as only 5 fouls were called in toto. One of my friends referenced the  "no blood, no foul" rule on two or three occassions. Joe Werner is indeed a physical player, and totally shut down Mr. Rosefelt's offense. The Eagles showed a proficient double-team when needed. I got the impression the Tommies may not have taken LC seriously enough in the first half, but the Eagle defense really was the difference. I would think UST is more a finesse team, and would have benefitted from a more closely called game. Good luck to UST down the road. Old School: I can't explain the difference in the Eagle' performance last night, as opposed to that of the Point game. My only thought is that Point combined physical play with excellent movement and passig. It was impressive. Lastly, I will respectfully suggest that Lax Eagles #1 and I have different opinions on coach K's substitution philosophy. I feel that the two losses may be partly explained by the perceived reduction in free substitution during those games. Depth is a real asset to this team. Thanks again for your interest. I hope you all have a safe and happy holiday season. Stay warm and enjoy the games.
