ANOTHER interesting rumor ... Cardinal Stritch is considering a move to Division 2 athletics with an offer/opportunity to join the GLVC (UW-Parkside's conference).

Two rumored coaching candidates are Dave Buchanon UWS's head coach and TJ Otzelberger, an Iowa State assistant, UWW graduate and former high school coach from the area.

No link ... sorry!

I don't think that it's any secret that both Coach Combs and Coach Buchanon are looking to one day move up the coaching ranks. Coach Combs is just coming off his best season and although Platteville should be very competitive for years to come, this might be the time for him to move on with his coaching stock being as high as its going to get in the short term following last season. Coach Buchanon on the other hand might be in a position that his two best years are still to come and his stock might continue to rise with the help of Culy, Smith and so on.  But it is Superior and I can't imagine he wants to stay up there forever, so he might just take the first boat of Superior he can find.

It should be a very interesting month for the WIAC with more recruits continuing to make up decisions and now possibly new coaching movements.

I do wonder why schools like Stritch want to move up.

I think athletics is way to increase enrollment, student diversity and ultimately to grow a school.

There is almost no way to differentiate itself from Norberts, Carthage, Carroll, Concordia, Lakeland ... by elevating themselves to D2 they put themselves into a different crowd with greater attention and expectations.

I don't think money is an issue ... they acquired the Cousins Center property from the Archdiocese of Milwaukee ... and I suspect they have other monies available or they wouldn't be contemplating such a move.

You do wonder if they'll ever be able to recruit the athletes to compete with the Northern Kentucky's and Southern Indiana's of the world.  They don't have football so Title IX shouldn't present a problem.

I could see Coach Combs leaving Platteville as well. He had his best team this past year that he may ever have there and there program will most likely be in rebuilding mode for the next couple of years. I don't see Coach Buchanan leaving Superior with a good recruiting class coming in and his best years at Superior left to come. They should be solid for the next two years and he will want to build his resume. We shall see what happens...

Greek Tragedy

Since this is a D3 board and you are talking about Cardinal Stritch "moving up," I would guess the assumption here is that they are D3.  I was pretty sure they were NAIA, so that differentiates themselves from Lakeland, St. Norb's, Carroll etc.

I know that some NAIA schools offer scholarships, but I'm not sure if Cardinal Stitch is one of those schools that offer athletic scholarships.  In addition, I know that there are two divisions of NAIA and not sure which one, if it's not both, offers athletic scholarships.

It would seem to me that Wisconsin is kind of a wasteland for D2 schools with only UW-Parkside.  As an NAIA school, Stritch doesn't really have much competition aside from Viterbo, right?

Anyway...not sure what all goes into deciding what affiliate a school wants to be.

NO ... The D3 connection is the coaching candidates (Buchanon, UWS) and Otzelberger (former-UWW player).

Sorry I put it here ... could you suggest some other more appropriate place?

Cardinal Stritch, didn't they used to Mount Senario?    :D

Oh ya, that's right.  Despite my inability to differentiate the two they are not related.  Didn't their head coach just retire?

Tom, money is one factor.  We used to have dual memberships, but we gave up the NAIA when the NCAA substantially reduced the membership fee for D3.

One week it's an Iowa school, then it's Whitewater, now it's Stevens Point.

At this rate the way Tillema is working his way North, he will likely be at Finlandia by the time the season actually rolls around!!!!

Posted on the Wishoops message board ... with no definitive confirmation is the following message:

QuoteUWSP is getting both Tillemas and the kid from Whitefish Bay.  I talked to a reliable source and he said that all three comitted.

No idea if it is true or not ... but this would be a big coup for UWSP ... especially getting both Tyler Tillema and Jerrell Harris!

Just Bill

For years, Cardinal Stritch has been jumping up and down, waving their arms, screaming, "Look at us! Look at us! We're better than D-III and just like D-II!"  And the enitre state of Wisconsin replied with a collective "Who?"

I guess they figure since they've been telling people for years their just as good as D-II, they might as well fianlly join D-II.
