For anyone wondering, Marcus Helland, the talented transfer from UMD/Baldwin/Woodville is still planning on playing at Superior despite Buchanan's departure.  That's bad news for the rest of the league.  That kid is good.

I agree with that assessment.  The kid is a certifiable Division 2 calibar player.  Strong, athletic and will bring UWS a solid presence in the middle.

He along with all of the returning talent makes UWS a title contender ... the real question is can they as a team overcome the loss of Buchanan ... from the emotional side.  The new coach, whomever he is going to be has a big job in getting these players to buy into him, his philosophies and concepts!

"Mourning sickness" Haha. That's a good one. :-\ True, but funny.

I'm hoping, in the new coach, a strong belief in defense. I love defense. I wish all players loved defense. Even more, I wish all coaches loved defense. That was Buchanan's weakness; just seemed to think 3s were flukes. If I were coaching--and it's a great thing I'm not--every player would be able to make fast breaks, post up, get double-digit assists in games, trap, and--I suppose--shoot. Shoot and rebound.  Rebound. Rebound. Rebound. Steal. Harrass. Run. Lots of emphasis on ball handling at all positions. Endurance. I loved that in Stout women's teams: the ability to run and run and put up ferocious defense after running.

Some team needs me; why isn't it calling ???

Marcus Helland is still planning on Attending UWS.  Logan Flora will take over Head Coaching Duties for Dave Buchanan.  They will not open up the position until after the 2009-2010 season.

I'm really hoping that UWP makes their announcement soon, because I'm dying for the rest of the WIAC world to know who Coach Gard has choosen.  Good picks IMHO.
I'll let the "cat out of the bag" then, since I have no affiliation with the Platteville program.  They have hired two assistants to round out their staff.

The first being former Wisconson and Penn State guard Shareef Chambliss.  His addition should definitely help with the recruiting process in the Racine area, which has had quite a bit of talent coming out of it lately.

The second if former Pioneer Bryan Stangel, one of only 30 players in school history to score over 1000 points for Platteville.

Sound about right?

UW-River Falls defeated UW-Superior in the championship game of the Jimmy V Classic held at the Just a Game Fieldhouse, downtown Wisconsin Dells a few weekends ago.  The tournament had a College division for the first time, and I'd say it went pretty well, for what I saw anyway.

Superior is going to be tough.  Falls played well obviously, but they did fall to Whitewater in pool play.  WIAC schools at the tournament included:  UWP, UW-Whitewater, UW-River Falls, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Stout, & UW-Superior.  I believe they will have that division again next year, so keep you calendars open for July 16-18, 2010 to catch the games.

One of my officiating partners, who played and coached @UWP was talking with Jake Smith of UW-Sup, and he was saying that the entire team had stayed in Superior for the summer and have been working out together all summer.  Thats a good way to make some progress for next season IMO.

Pioneer,
Sorry to hear the bad news about your soccer coach.  I hope he makes a full recovery.

Was that Bryan Stangel or Brad who is coaching at Edgewood?  Brad knows all the kids and is in the loop.  I believe Bryan is working in Graphic Design somewhere around Madison.

Jake Smith, I believe, is going to shoulder a huge leadership role. The remarkable thing I see in him is not only the willingness to be a leader but also to be a worker. He had to be the hardest working player on the UWS team last year. If everyone had his work ethic, the season would have ended much differently. IMHO, of course.

Nice article in the La Crosse Tribune about the UWL hoopsters by name of Werner, Joe and Katy, who are playing pro ball overseas in Australia...

Kind of scary thing.  I have not heard his latest status yet, so hopefully things are going well with him and his family.  Thanks for the sincerity.
