If anyone has a little spare change around and wish to contribute to gift cards for his family as they make the daily drive to Dubuque and try and maintain somewhat of a normal lifestyle, we would be very appreciative of anything you can do for a fellow D3 person. You may send anything you wish to: UW-Platteville Athletics, c/o Enzo Fuschino Fund, 1 University Plaza, Platteville, WI 53818. Coach Fuschino led the Pioneers to their first-ever NCAA III playoff berth last year and is truly a class act. I know there are so many good people who read this site, so if you want to help him, his family, and his extended family (many flying in from Italy), we would humbly accept your acts of generosity. Coach Fuschino is currently in Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Did the Pioneer Have a mascot that looked like a Miner Pioneer Pete?

Badger_Hoops

Back in the 70's one of the frats had a Pioneer Pete mascot don't recall if it was official but I remember he stopped appearing at football games after a game when he had a few to many at the pre-game fire up party.
Good luck to Coach Gard and his new staff

In other news... I just checked out UWW's schedule, and they're playing in Carthage's Tip-Off Tourney.  I thought Carthage didn't have diplomatic relations with the Wisconsin publics...!

Wow! They must have really been hard up to find an opponent. I'd like to attend that tournament, just to watch Carthage's president sit and steam all weekend.

I don't know how this came about so I'm just speculating however Carthage athletic teams are allowed to play WIAC teams in multi-team events.  Given that this is a tournament I assume that other teams are participating so perhaps that's how it came to be.

I would speculate that Carthage would play WIAC teams in other school's multi-team tournaments, not their own!  This just shows they actually invited them!  ::)

Best wishes to Coach Fuschino and family.

I just saw something that might (possibly) have future implications for WIAC basketball in the future.

UWSP's Football schedule includes three "Varsity reserve" games...  Seemingly these would be JV-type games, I would imagine...  This may set a precedent that could allow for those types of games to be played by the basketball programs too.

I don't know nearly as much about football history as I do basketball history so I don't know if this has happened before... but regardless, it seems odd to me when there is such a "budget crisis" that these games are occurring right now.  Maybe they happened previously and just weren't on the schedule and two of the games (Oshkosh and St. Norbert) are about as close in terms of distance as you can get for a college game... but still, there are lots of extra costs involved.

That being said... I love the move and I hope that in the future the WIAC does move to JV games for basketball too.  The playing experience in those games can be invaluable for younger players and I think this could help some with retention of younger players.  You don't see too many guys like Matt Bouche or Cory Krautkramer... guys that paid their dues for 3 years and finally got a shot in their senior year.  Most just don't stick it out if they're not getting PT... but they might if they're playing JV and getting some minutes in that way.

PointSpecial...

The Pointers have played JV football games for at least the past three years.  The reason I know is because they have played UWW the past three years.

I agree, without "redshirting" it is great that some of the young players get actual game experience.

uwsuper.edu confirms that Logan Flora has been named interim Head Coach.  Should provide some consistency for a team that should have high expectations.

I wonder if this has contributed to the successes of the two programs over this period...?  Btw, WW is preseason #2 (again) and Point is preseason #7 over on the gridiron.

I doubt it's done anything to hurt them.   I'm under the impression that very few WIAC programs are fielding JV teams and we've had a hard time finding opponents for our JV games.  In addition to UW-SP we've scheduled UW-Milwaukee's club team and some JuCo schools in the past but I think three games is as many as we've been able to schedule in a season.   Though, admittedly, I don't know how many games the staff would like to schedule.
