bgbacker--it's no accident that EC has been in the championship game for the 15th straight year of their own tourney: all teams who host tournaments choose their first  round opponents very carefully. (:

Fred.  Don't be such smarty pants.  I talked to our old friend Aric Carpenter (new EC North coach) on our Sat. show a couple weeks ago and I reminded him on the air how Gary Meschke and myself used to just destroy DR and Carpy on the golf course.  He says he does not remember it that way.  Don't bother looking for me at the Stout/RF game to buy me the beer you owe me.  I will be waisting away in Mexico for the next couple of weeks.  Tell Bowen I heard him on the radio awhile back and that I think he has finally found a job he is really good at.

Point beats Viterbo 75-57 on a 52 point second half.  Point trailed until the 4:37, when they retook the lead 51-50 and Point outscored the V-Hawks 24-7 the rest of the game.

The final total was helped by Viterbo's decision to extend the game... they started fouling with just under 2 minutes to go and Point made a bundle of FT's (17-19 for the game).  And Point shot 8-16 from deep, the third straight game that Point has hit at least 7 3's and that they've shot .500 or better from deep (10/20 against WLU, 7/12 against UST).

stoutguy--I calls em as I sees em. Carpy evidendly is the only guy with a sound memory.

Too bad you won't be at Stout/RF game. I'm bringing Mike Noreen to the game. He will easily lose his allegiance to Menomonie and be a Falcon backer from now on.

RF 74, Macalester 40 (at Macalester). Voeltz leads scoring with 19.

Here are the stats from the Point/Viterbo game:  STATS

Point had just 6 turnovers.  They got down in the first half due to foul trouble (Hurd was sitting with 2 fouls just 5 minutes into the game and Moses was sitting with two with 5 minutes left in the half.  Point had no answer inside for Scott Buschman who had 15 of Viterbo's 33 points at the half.  Point was outrebounded 20-12 in the first half and outshot 52% (14/27) to 37% (10/27).  Point also shot zero free throws in the first half.  The Point radio guys felt there was lots of contact inside and fouls should have been called... but, no call, no foul, and Point trailed 33-23 at the half.  Point was playing from behind the entire first half.  They tied it several times and went ahead 11-10 with 14:02 left in the half on Jerrel Harris' 3, but they were outscored 23-12 the rest of the half.

Point whittled away at the lead but they couldn't take it.  They kept getting closer and closer, and finally, with 4:39 to go in the half, Jared Jenkins hit a jumper to put Point ahead 51-50.  From that point on, something seemed to click.  Point went on a tear and outscored Viterbo 24-7 over the last 4+ minutes.  They sealed it form the line, hitting 13/14 FT's, which definitely helped puff up the final margin, but those FT's were in the final 1:42.  Point only had one bucket, with 7 seconds left and the shot clock expiring in the last two minutes.  Even without that last shot, though, they shot over 50% for the half including 5/6 threes.  They ended the game -2 in the rebounding category, 35-33, but they were much tougher on the boards in the second half.  They also held Viterbo to just 6 points in the paint, after they had gotten 18 in the first half.

This was a tough game for UWSP after the big win last night.  Now they've got a week off before Oshkosh comes to town for a rare 8:00 Wednesday night game.  I think I heard the Point radio guys say this was a double header with the women.  Yep, it is, just checked.  It's the first game of a 3-game conference homestand, also with La Crosse and Platteville.

I think this is a pretty tough next 3 games for Point.  They want to keep pace with Whitewater, but so do La Crosse and Platteville, and all three teams are tied in the loss column.  And Oshkosh and Point almost always seem to play pretty tight games.

Whitworth....94
WHITEWATER....84

Though to a lesser degree the first half of this game was similar to Monday night.  The lead went back and forth with 5 lead changes and 6 ties before Whitworth scored the last seven points of the half and led 42-37.  Both teams shot the ball well (WW: 12-20, 60% including 5-9 3-pointers...Whitworth 16-30, 53% including 6-11 3 pointers) but the WARHAWKS turned the ball over 12 times to just 1 for Whitworth.  Whitworth led the entire second half.  After falling behind by 10 points the WARHAWKS shaved the lead down to 2 points, 66-64, with 8:24 to play but Whitmore pushed the lead back to 14 points with 2:22 remaining and 10 points is as close as the WARHAWKS would get the rest of the way.

Dustin Mitchell led the WARHAWK scorers and rebounders with 17 and 8 respectively.  DJ Dantzler added 16 points while Mike Bendall and Phil Negri each scored 12 points.  Negri and Fletcher DuPree each had 4 assists.  WHITEWATER finished with 15 turnovers while Whitworth had only 3.

too bad...a win there would possibly give them the #1 spot. However, a 12-1 start for the first half of the season....i'll take it.

I agree, an excellent holiday record for our conference.

I don't mean to detract from the luster of the WIAC holiday record, but the four Falcon wins were over a pretty sorry bunch of teams (did not see St. Scholastica, or Macalester, but their records were dismal). To RF's credit, they did  not play down to the opposition.
