Brian Carroll told me tonight that Wednesday night Andy Merklein had zero rebounds.  How can a solid 6'9" guy not get even one?  And how could they get a timeline violation when unguarded?  I can't believe how lackadaisacal this team is.  ???

Merklein did have one offensive rebound and only played 16 minutes.

Ah.  Thanks for the correction.  Still seems like a small contribution to me.

EC beats Platteville 79-70
Superior beats La Crosse 98-89

Stout leading Oshkosh in the second half (12:41) 39-34

And the W in WIAC might start to mean Wacky again... River Falls leads Whitewater 39-26 with 14 minutes to go.

River Falls has led by as many as 22.  Whitewater has not led.  Switching to in-game thread...

The Wacky WIAC for sure .... EC gets 29 points and 10 rebounds from Geoff Probst to beat P-Ville, 79-70. Probst went over the 1000-pt plateau. Fofana adds 16. Blugolds got just two points from their bench. The logjam in the middle of the league gets even tighter, but EC has to go to Stevens Pt and Whitewater next week.

And the Warhawks go down 68-69 against River Falls!!!

Point and WW now tied atop the league, and Stout slides into third place with their victory and Platteville/La Crosse losing.

Hats off to RF for pulling off the upset, but Whitewater had tons of chances.  They missed 5/10 FT's in OT.

As an aside... To end the game, Danny Johnson got the rebound and lobbed it down the court to secure the win.  Anybody remember what happened several years ago when someone did that?

you may recall that in 2001-2002 a pretty wacky WIAC season...
In the conference tournament, #3 seed River Falls was hosting #6 Oshkosh.  With RF up 3 and the clock running down, Oshkosh shot a 3 to tie and missed.  An RF player got the ball and threw it in the air to run out the clock but the ball hit the ceiling and Oshkosh nailed a 3 to tie and send the game to overtime.  Oshkosh won in OT 95-87.

First thing I thought of when I heard that Danny Johnson lobbed the ball down the court like that!

I wonder if River Falls can pull a Stout and upset Point on Wednesday...

And that actually slides LaX to 6-7 in the league and OUT of the conference tournament if it ended today.

don't remind us of Kent Becker's ceiling incident.....

If things workout, 5 teams could end the season at 6-10 for two playoffs spots. Upsets (or good wins this year as they should be called) would have to happen though.

I wish I'd seen this one coming, but the way RF has played at home this year there was  no predicting a Falcon win. Koonkaew with 19, Guerin: 16 and 10 rbds., Voeltz: 15. WW leaders were Negri with 16, Dantzler: 15, Mitchell: 15 and 10 rbds. Falcons "outshot" WW 39% to 35%. F.T. percentage was biggest differential:  70% for RF, 59% for WW.

First WIAC home win for RF...  pretty unbelievable.

I think RF can definitely use the bye on Wed and I was glad to hear that Koonkaew's injury was only a cramp and not a respraning of his ankle.  If he wants, he can still sit out next Sat at Point...

Wow, just looked at the Oshkosh/Stout box... nobody for Oshkosh scored in double digits, Oshkosh outrebounded Stout by 14, and Stout made 11 more baskets while taking 8 fewer shots!

PS--There's a slight difference between the incidents you describe:  Kent Becker, RF guard, threw the ball straight up in premature celebration a few years ago. It it the ceiling. Oshkosh then scored to tie it up. Tonight, Danny Johnson passed (lobbed) the  ball back down court after getting a loose ball under WW's basket. Had time not run out, RF would have had a layup.

But I can see how you were reminded of the other incident.

I knew it wasn't quite exactly the same (though I just "saw" it through the eyes of the RF radio guys, not on vid or in person).  They specifically said "lobbed it down the court" but I just immediately thought about the Becker incident.
