While they won't challenge the big 3 for conference standings, I think UWL is a good bet for 4th place. Statton had a whale of a game yesterday and this takes the pressure off Tony Mane , who actually "held his fire" while Stratton was hot. Tony hasn't  always been able to show such constructive restraint. The team has excellent depth. Witness T.J. Nehring hplding down the PG slot while Brandon Brown is out. We have some inside prescence this year to balance the good outside game which Coach K has always provided. Best of all, almost everyone is back next year. My advice to my friends in WW, Point and P-Ville: Be afraid, Be very afraid.

Just a quick comment...don't want to be rude to the hosts...

Brian,

You should comment more often.  Charlie is always talking about you and what you guys think, but it's good to hear it from you.

I will disagree with you and your comment regarding not challenging the top 3.  I think you do have a good shot at 4, but if you don't beat any of the top 3, you'll put a scare into them.

Like I posted before, I nearly picked La Crosse vs. Whitewater last week.  I think Point caught La Crosse at a good time, early in the year before the gears started going and Stratton started going off.  There is a good possibility I'll be picking La Crosse more often than not in 2009, especially at home.

When is Brandon Brown coming back?

I actually picked Johnson Fieldhouse in Stout.  The crowd really seems to get into it up there, at least when Point comes to town.  I've never been to Superior.  Oshkosh is too big, River Falls feels like a high school gym, I don't like the lighting in La Crosse or Whitewater.  Platteville is a nice place.  And I couldn't be a homer and pick Quandt! lol  If I remember correctly, if you sit way up in the nose bleeds at Zorn, you can't really see much above the rim....like a long shot or heave from half court.

OS, it's a good thing you came to your senses. :D   All of the lighting in the gym has been replaced with new fixtures.  These are tons brighter and flush with the ceiling rather than hanging off it like the old fixtures did.  It's a lot better this year.  You'll notice it when you come to the Point game.

That was a guality road win for your Pointer.

LaCrosse is going to be a tough game when teams face them in their gym.  So if they can get some wins on the road they should end up with a good season.

OS: I think Mitchell Hall will be a potential deathtrap for the big 3 this year. I am only beginning to contemplate my pick for the P-Ville visit this Wednesday. I simply don't think we can crack the top 3 places in the standings this year. The loss at Zorn (my favorite arena) was a killer. UWL shoulda coulda won that game. By the way, Mitchell Hall has improved since your last visit. The ugly overhead scoreboard has been replaced by large 'boards on both ends of the court. The maroon seating which was put in several years ago was a BIG improvement for what was once the ugliest gym I've ever seen. Much better now. Personal regards to you and to Mr. Swampgoon.

OS: I forgot to attempt to answer your question about Brandon Brown. I have heard that he is attempting to regain  his eligibility by taking a course during the January session. I do not, however, know this to be factual.

I voted for Quandt, even though I haven't been to all the arenas.  I'm sure Brian will vote for Quandt.

It would be hard to justify a palace like they have in other places with our attendance.  The main reason we are building such a fancy outdoor stadium is the state track meet.  I don't think our football team has ever sold out Veterans Stadium.

Won't that be a waste when they move the state track meet to Oshkosh in a few years?

Reporting I've read in La Crosse quotes WIAA officials as saying they were never interested in Oshkosh.  The rumors of the meet moving were used to motivate fundraising in La Crosse since the university seriously erred in naming the stadium, eventually reduced to the field, for Roger Harring.

Anyone at the Superior/Oshkosh game on Saturday? Did Dwight Hill actually play in the game? I saw that he played one minute. Doesn't make sense unless he tweaked his ankle again to only play a minute.

Dwight will did check in and matched up on Andy Kretsch.  Dwight Hill checked back out as soon as Wittwer was back in the game.  You can definitely see that he was hobbling around.  He would have been a liability on D.

I made the long drive down to P-ville and was treated to a great game. This one was like a tournament game with both teams playing pretty well. Lohoff had a fine game but everything seemed to click for SP and everyone had their moments out on the court. They even hit free throws :)  Does Skemp ever get fired up??  He seemed to play with about as much emotion as Kerry Gibson displayed when he played for Oshkosh. Well I picked SP in the pick 'em board, so I just had to buy a Powerball ticket on the way home too ;D

Generally Jeff doesn't show much emotion.  Usually gets more excited for teammates than for anything he does.  He wasn't feeling very well before the game, so I'm sure that had something to do with him looking "lifeless".

This was a great college basketball team.  Two, very evenly matched ball clubs.  It was just going to come down to who was going to make the stops late in the game.  Point shot 48% in the second half.  But in the last 5 minutes of the second half I'm guessing it was about 70%.  Lay up after lay up.  This was a tough loss for the Pioneers.  Key to me, other than lack of defense late in the game, was Pioneers inability to make free throws.

Making the trip on Wednesday to LaCrosse.  This game scares me more than going to Point, Whitewater, and the trip to Canada.  LaCrosse is a team the Pioneers haven't played very well in the past.  I am looking forward to the trip though.

Well, it looks like things are normal as always here on the ol' WIAC board.

It'll be a quasi-reunion of old WRST/Titan TV sports losers -- err, alumni -- at Kolf Saturday. Hope to see a bunch of Titans fans there...

Go Titans!!!

Look for us, Pioneer Hoops Fan!  Brian Carroll, Big K, and I will be there.  We will probably be sitting on the side behind the benches, ten rows or so up, sort of behind the scorer's table.

We're a bunch of old guys!  I'm six feet tall and pretty heavy, with greying brown hair and a full beard.

It would be nice to meet you!

I'll only be there if this bus thing ends up taking off.  If it does though, I will be sure to look for you.  I know we plan on hitting up the bar that is right near Mitchell Hall.  I'm only guessing we'll be pretty warm by the time we get there thanks to our liquid long johns.

Congrats to LaX's Trevor Stratton a member of this week's D3hoops.com team of the week.  He's on a roll.
