Dumb question ... many D2 leagues broadcast their games over the internet ... obviously it takes a television setup ... is that something the WIAC may go to?

Ah, OS, always good to hear from you. I probably missed too much of the season to get in on the action this year, but I wouldn't mind having an excuse to spend more company time studying the league...

"Drew, where's that story?"

La Crosse blows an 8 pt second half lead as patient Platteville utilizes an inside - outside strategy in the second half. Skemp is a load, and the Pioneers were adept at kicking the ball out to the guards for a series of three point baskets to make up the deficit, When the Eagles  attempted to shut down the threes, they were unable to stop Skemp inside, I believe he had 23 pts for the night. Andy Merklein played pretty well on defense, but had foul trouble - playing only 5 minutes in the first half.

Platteville looked really good.

Congrats to them on winning a tough road game.

Superior pathetic in first half; must need a two-hour bus ride to shake them out. Jake Smith kept the Supes alive long enough for Culy to fire up. Soooooo, Superior has 2/3 of 1/2 of the Highway 29 trifecta. Hill plays like Hill in bursts but looks sore by the end. Koonkaew could do just about anything he wanted for 30 minutes.

I can understand why Hill might be sore afterward.  He played 43 of 45 minutes according to the box score.

Moses parted the Blue Devil sea in the second half.  That's some pretty decent production in 20 minutes.

Congrats Matt Goodwin....

Inside Wisconsin Sports magazine has chosen UW-Whitewater's Matt Goodwin as its College Male Athlete of the Year for 2008.  The announcement is included in the February 2009 issue of the magazine.

Goodwin earned the honor for his play during the 2007-2008 season, leading the Warhawks to the championship of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the WIAC's postseason tournament title, helping the team earn a berth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III championship tournament.

In 2007-2008 Goodwin, a unanimous First Team All-WIAC pick, was chosen as the WIAC Player of the Year.  He was a National Associaton of Basketball Coaches Association Division III First Team All-West Region pick and NABC First Team All-American.

Goodwin averaged 17.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals last year as UW-W went 24-5.

Goodwin was in good company.  Former Brewers' pitcher C.C. Sabathia was named Male Professional Athlete of the Year, Janel McCarville of the New York Liberty Female Professional Athlete of the Year, and Traci Edwards of UW-Milwaukee Female College Athlete of the Year by Inside Wisconsin Sports.  Marquette guard Jerel McNeal was the runnerup for the Male College Athlete of the Year honor.

This game Wednesday will do more than just separate #2 from #3... it will also begin to provide some separation for the now more important than ever seedings for the conference tournament.  With the new 6 team format, the 3rd seed will now have to host a game on Tuesday and then travel to #2 on Thursday... playing a rested #2 seed, provided that they beat the #6 seed.  Historically the #6 has had the upper hand in this game:

#3 seeds are just 5-5 against the #6 seeds, with two of the victories going to overtime, two being within 10 points, and just one being a double digit victory.  The last 4 years, #3's have won in round 1... And they're 2-3 in the round 2... with one of the two victories coming last year against #7 seed Eau Claire @ #3 seed Stevens Point, after EC knocked off #2 seed Platteville in round 1.

There have been a few upsets of 8's and 7's... including the one I mentioned above.  Platteville was also on the winning end of a 7/2 upset match-up in the year of the upset, 2000, when #1, #2, and #3 all went down.  That year was the only year that #1 lost.

So there have been 3 upsets in 20 match-ups in the 1/8 and 2/7 bouts... which won't happen any more...  But what about in round 2?

Of the 17 situations where 1 and 2 went on to round 2 (and thus hosted), they're 12-5, going 6-1 since 2005.  Interestingly, they were just 6-4 in previous years... and those years were years of co-champions... in the 6 years of the conference tournament prior to 2005, 3 years had co- or tri-champions, versus just one in the 4 years since 2005.  Compare this with the 3 seed, who is 2-3 in the second round... with just one of those victories coming over a 2 seed.

... In other words, this new setup bodes well for the 1 and 2 seeds... and they already did well.  #1's have won 6 of the WIAC tourneys, with the other 4 being won by seeds #2 and #4 (two apiece).

As the tourney has gone on, there has been less and less parity... I think largely due to the fact that the league has had less parity.  Now, this is a subjective statement... I haven't done an analysis on this based on the results (the results of the regular season, that is), to see if there is a correlation between regular season parity and post season parity... but it seems that this would be the case... As I said, there were co- or tri- champs 3 times in the 6 seasons of 99-04 and just one co-champ in 2005 to the present... and there haven't been as many upsets recently.

Well it looks like it's setting up for the classic 4 vs. 5 game where Oshkosh gets beat by Superior in the WIAC tournament.  It's like the sun rising in the East.  :'(
