A little weird that they mention that TVD had a bloodied fist, but they never tell why or how. Any journalsim majors in Oshkosh?

Looks like an accidental  :D contact with the scorers table did the deed according to the article.

Can any of you Pointer guys tell me if the Dick and Jack Bennett floor renaming was yesterday?  Curious as to how it went.  Bob Semling had some pretty kind words regarding Jack's influence on his coaching style and success during our interview Sat. morning.  Reminded me of the old Dick VS Jack debates years ago.  For the record, my WIAC numbers show Dick at .684 (173-80) and Jack at .781. (200-56).  This conversation came up because we were talking about how tough it is for guys like Bob Semling and Pat Miller to get credit for being good because they work at a place where they have been good for a long time.  Regarding Dick VS Jack, I ran into a former Blugold the other night who was back for the alumni game (he told me that none of the other 80's guys showed up).  He told me he remembered preparing for a game against Green Bay and how the press was making a big deal about Bennett/Bennett (Jack being an EC assistant at the time and Dick the head guy at GB) and the players were kind of getting involved with that talk as well.  The EC head coach told his players, "Listen closely to this, gentlemen.  I am the head coach at EC and no one in this room had better damn well forget it."

Nope, it's next weekend,

Dedication is set for this coming Sat vs Superior 3:00PM.  How do you pick between the two, near impossible. Dick picked up a program that was down (24-72 in 6 prior conf years) and made it very successful. Jack grabbed a middling program (36-28 in 4 prior conf years) and made it very successful.

Oh yeah, I guess I missed it. My apologies.

Are they going to name the floor after both of the Bennetts?  If so it's a nice honor and appropriate to name it after both.  They both left their marks on Pointer basketball.

It has been nice to see Stout compete in the last two games.  Once at home and one on the road.  I like to see WIAC teams have to earn their wins and I am still a little worried that the top 3 teams will be the only ones to decide who wins it this year without any upsets.  Personally I like the years like when Piont won it after losing twice to Suptown.

That would be the same EC head coach who told all us PE class bowling students that "the name of the game is to knock down the pins."

His Blugold teams gave Dick Bennett's Pointers more than they could handle, more so than under the current regime, which is why Dick's WIAC winning percentage numbers are not as high as Jack's...  ;)

From the cliche book, though, at least yesterday's 'Golds, against Whitewater, "played hard," as they have done for the last few seasons...

Of course, the newspaper's game wrap quotes Coach Gibbons as saying the Warhawks are not a team you want to try to exchange baskets with.

Nope. You want to score more baskets than your opponent! I may be on to something here, a philosophy which may be one reason why Jack had more success against UWEC!  ;)

Yep, both.  I could not find any other stories... but this one mentions it about 2/3 of the way down the page.

Quote
Name game: The Quandt Fieldhouse basketball court at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will be named after Dick Bennett and his brother, Jack.

A ceremony will be held on Feb. 7, in conjunction with the Pointers 3 p.m. men's contest against UW-Superior.

Both enjoyed successful coaching stints at Stevens Point. Dick guided the Pointers to an NAIA national runner-up finish in 1984, while Jack led Stevens Point to back-to-back NCAA Division III national titles in 2004-05.

The court officially will be called "Dick and Jack Bennett Court."

"It's very nice. I'm honored. It's not necessary," said Dick, who also coached the University of Wisconsin to a spot in the 2000 Final Four. "There are a lot of coaches who have done so well, and they don't get a court named after them, and I wish they would."

Added Jack: "It'll be something very special, to share it with him where we both kind of cut our teeth. When I think back at the Point tradition, Dick really tried to rebuild the program, and we were very grateful for finishing the way we did. So this will be something neat to share. I guess it just means we're getting old."

But Buchanon had less to start with and has made UW-Superior a viable team ... primarily through relentless recruiting.
Since when is finishing 5-11 (probably best case-scenario) in WIAC play considered "viable?"

With what they had returning, I would argue that they have been the biggest disappointment in the WIAC this season.  For a team that was returning four of their five starters, I was expecting a winning season out of the Jackets for the first time since I have started following WIAC basketball.  It appears as if they won't even qualify for the conference tournament, much less have a winning record.  I know they have been hit  with the injury bug, but with all the "relentless recruiting" shouldn't they have some guys that are able to step in?

Intersting game slated for Wednesday in Eau Claire........

I would say the Blugolds are in a "must-win" situation on Wednesday against the Titans, if they are to have any chance at the #4 seed in the WIAC Tournament.  A loss puts them for all intensive purposes two games behind Oshkosh since the Titans would have swept the season series and hold the tie-breaker.  A win by Oshkosh goes a long way in securing a home game in the first round of the WIAC tournament.

I guess the more I think about it, the less I should be surprised that Superior is struggling this year.  The WIAC is typically a Junior/Senior dominated league, and with most of Superior's main parts being Sophomores yet, I will give them a "pass" on this season.  However if things repeat themselves the next couple of years, then I would call it a disappointment.

I heard they are already sharpening up the edges on the scorer's table in expectation of a big game with the Titans.  ::)

Top 5 scorers - 3 so's, 1 Jr and 1 Sr
Top 5 rebounders - 3 so's, 1 Sr and 1 Fr
Top 5 assists - 3 so's, 1 Jr and 1 Fr
Top 5 steals - 3 so's, 1 Jr and 1 Sr

PLUS ... UW-Superior has a disadvantage in enrollment, facilities and location when compared to UWO.

They should get a pass!
