Hoping to see the 'Hawks play themselves back into the WIAC regular season championship this saturday by keeping flawless record at home. Gald to see they took that first step yesterday against a tough Pioneer team.

After that, let's see if LaCrosse and/or Platteville can help out the 'Hawks by winning its Point games. Very winnable for Platteville, but not so much for the Eagles  :-\

Should be a very exciting finish...

Have you ever seen two games so similar? In both Platteville and Whitewater last night, the Pioneers led early on, but the Warhawks cut the lead to 32-31 at halftime in both games. The Warhawks led 57-54 around the four-minute mark in both games and then hit their free throws down the stretch to make both final margins 13. The games had the same score 11 different times!

I thought Platteville played Whitewater.  I know the WIAC is good, but you played two games at once in both towns?  There is the argument for the WIAC going to D2 if I ever had one.

And last night TVD is probably out cutting his sturgeon hole.

Geez, I thought most people could have figured that out. OK, let me clarify. We played the women's game in Platteville and the men's game in Whitewater. That's what made those similarities so striking.

"Most people" could have figured it out, sid.

We were struck by the similarities too.

Great game last night at WW, both teams really played hard. Once WW took a 5 point lead it looked like Plt went to the 3 pt shot too often. I thought they would go inside a little more but credit WW's defense.

A rumor was circulating in the stands that Rob Perry has been practicing with the team. One student thought he might be coming back. That would sure add to WW's depth. I talked to a WW player afterwards and he confirmed that Rob had practiced a little. Obviously he must have some eligibility left or is it legal for any student to practice? Interesting story either way!

I watched the La Crosse/River Falls game with Brian.  I agree with what he said.  Also, I wouldn't be surprised if a copy of that film showing the shot a three shows up at the league office.

I agree that it didn't decide the game, but its hard to see what any ref thought he saw to justify reversing it.

Trust me, if Rob Perry had any eligibility left he would already be playing.  He's used his eligibility.   I'll take you word that he's practicing with the team.  He wasn't the few times I observed practice earlier in the season.  But I doubt it violates any NCAA rules because he isn't on the roster and isn't dressing for nor participating in any contest.

I honestly do not think that is legal.  I would have to do some research on the guidelines to letting students practice.  I know in Women's basketball, they have restricted the team's use of male students in practice once per week, and I believe no more than 2 can be playing.  Even though they are in practice once per week, they are using a year of eligibility in doing so.  I know we are not talking about women's basketball here, but where is the line drawn for men's?

If Rob has no eligibility left, he can not be considered part of the "team".  I think then, teams would use their "gray shirts" to compete against in practice...which you can't do because they would be considered part of the team and use a year of eligibility in doing so.  If a guy has none left, how can he be practicing with the team then?

Thoughts from elsewhere?

Just Bill

You can't participate in practice without being certified by the conference and you can't be certified if you don't have any eligibility left.  If he's practicing without any eligibility he's in violation.  However, if they've added him to the roster as a "volunteer assistant coach" then he could participate in drills.

Even men's players that participate in women's practices as scout team members have to be certified.

Greek Tragedy

I tought Rob Perry already used a medical redshirt or something to get his "other" senior year in, of course, he got hurt again...

Anyway, my opinion would be that he couldn't practice with the team.  I mean, you can't just let anyone practice with the team.  As Just Bill pointed out, there are ways around that...volunteer assistant or whatever.

I have no idea what Stevens Point did a few years back, but they had Jason Kalsow, Nick Bennett and Kyle Grusczynski all on the coaching staff.  I'm sure they weren't out in full practice uniforms, but I would guess they were in warm ups and participating in drills.

At this time, even if Perry were eligible, they are doing just fine without him.  Vernon looks like he'll get 1st team all-conference and Dustin Mitchell has finally come around in his junior year.  I remember talking to BW when he was a freshman and I think he said something like, "Yeah, he's tall, but he needs a lot of work..."  Looks like that work has paid off.

Four Recognized on Inside Wisconsin Sports All-Time Basketball Team

MADISON, Wis.--Four former Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) individuals have been named to the Inside Wisconsin Sports magazine All-Time Collegiate Men's Basketball Team.

UW-Stevens Point's Terry Porter (1981-85) was named to the "starting five", while UW-Platteville's Merrill Brunson (1995-99) and UW-River Falls' Rich Melzer (2000-04) were selected as "bench players".  UW-Platteville's Bo Ryan (1985-99) was chosen as the head coach.

Porter was joined in the starting lineup by Marquette University's Bo Ellis (1973-77) and Dwyane Wade (2001-03) and University of Wisconsin's Don Rehfeldt (1946-50) and Michael Finley (1991-95).

Brunson and Melzer were joined on the bench by UW-Green Bay's Tony Bennett (1989-92), UW-Milwaukee's Larry Reed (1959-60, 64-67), University of Wisconsin's Rashard Griffith (1993-95) and Alando Tucker (2002-07) and Marquette University's George Thompson (1966-69).

How many players in the WIAC take at least two years to fully develop their talents.  95% of players in the WIAC "need a lot of work as a freshman.  Chip was a solid role player as a sophomore and has developed into one of the three or four big men in the WIAC.  If you aren't convinced, ask Jeff Skemp.

But then UWW is catagorized each year as a bunch of great athletes that don't play team basketball.  For those of you that think that - rip off an email to other coaches around the league and ask about UWW's play.

Should be a great day  on Saturday at the the Auggie as opposed to Bo Ryan and Bennett Courts!
