Greek Tragedy

The way I see it...

Oshkosh beat Superior and Whitewater beat River Falls.

If Platteville wins and Stout continues to beat up on Eau Claire...

Point #1 seed (14-2)
Platteville #2 seed (13-3) because Oshkosh would be #4 and Platteville went 2-0 vs. Oshkosh while Whitewater went 1-1.
Whitewater #3 seed (13-3)
Oshkosh #4 seed (9-7)
Eau Claire #5 seed (8-8)
River Falls #6 seed (5-11)

Here is the problem.  WW and PL are 1-1 vs. teams in conference standings in descending order (#1 SP)...but, we can't determine who's #4 and who's #5 (Oshkkosh or Eau Claire).  Likewise, we can't can determine the #4 or #5 spot using record vs. teams in conference standings in descending order because we can't determine if WW or PL are #2 and #3...got that.  That's where the problem comes in.
Exactly my point. You don't need to determine who 4 and 5 are.  You always work from the top down and you treat EC and OSH as a single unit.  WW is 3-1 against EC & OSH, and PLT is also 3-1 against EC & OSH.  In this case it doesn't break the tie, so you move on.

Eventually you separate the #2 and #3 (road record or coin flip), and then there's no problem when you determine #4 and #5.

It's been done that way in the WIAC and other leagues before.  I don't get why they don't remember that this time around.

Greek Tragedy

There's a difference between cumulative record against teams placed higher in the standings and record vs. teams in conference standings in decending order.

The first is a group of teams.  The second is individual teams.  You can't group teams that are placed lower than you.

You can't treat OSH and EC as a single unit.

It's been done before in the WIAC.  That's exactly how they solved the problem in the past.  If the two teams are tied you treat them as tied until you are able to break them up.  I'll have to go back and find the specific instance but I know this has come up before.

Just days after Coach Gibbons said was a "signature win" for the UWEC program over #4 Platteville on Wednesday (which, by the way, brought the team's record to a, insert trumpet fanfare here, 8-7 in conference play and 15-9 overall, and a shot at the #4 seed, perhaps?)... well...

So much for the seeding questions, especially as far as the #4 seed, as the 'Golds took the bull by the horns, taking things into their own hands, by losing to Stout today.

No offense to Stout, but if the 'Golds Wednesday W against an upper-level team was "a big win for our program," what was today's loss against a team that finished 2-14 in the conference?

After Wednesday's win, Gibbons was not going to think too much about the seedings (for a possible #4 slot and home game) heading into today's game against Stout... He told the Leader-Telegram, "We're just happy to be in that position right now," he said. "We'll just let the chips fall where they may. If we have to be on the road next Tuesday, we'll be on the road. If we're at home, then we'll be at home. But this team will be ready."

Perhaps he forgot they had to play today?

Hey Titan 2000 sorry you were disappointed today as the Titans took care of business and beat Superior.  As someone who has been watching WIAC basketball closely for the past 10 years, and especially Oshkosh, I am always amazed at your whining and sarcasim over TVD and the program.  You obviously were a former player who could not hack Ted and are trying to get back at him and the team.  Would really like to meet you to discuss this.  See you after the game Tuesday downstairs where the team comes out and we could chat.  The Titans are playing pretty good basketball right now, even after a lot of people had them wriiten off.  Tuesday's game with EC will be a war, especially after all of the comments that were made by EC players after their last meeting.  It should be a great WIAC tourney, as always.

Forget about T2000, that's old news.  I am curious about what the EC kids had to say after that last meeting.  I, too, have always felt that TVD tends to get a bad rap when all he ever does is recruit his type of player, coach every game hard, tell it "the way it is" to the media, and go about his business in a pretty successful way year after year.  We talk to Bob Burnell who covers your Titans all the time and he pretty much isn't afraid to "tell it like it is" as well.  Bob has nothing but respect for the way that Ted goes about his business.

The WARHAWKS scored the first 10 points but River Falls rallied back and with 9:47 remaining tied the game 15-15.  Five ties and eight lead changes after that a Matt Goodwin dunk gave the WARHAWKS a 34-32 lead to close the half.  River Falls scored first in the second half but the WARHAWKS answered and got up by five before River Falls came back and tied the game 40-40 with 15:30 to play.  After the two teams traded the lead Tyson Kingsby hit a three-pointer to put the WARHAWKS back on top 46-43.  WHITEWATER would hold the lead, which never was larger than six points, for the next six minutes before Jontae Koonkaew drained a three-pointer and put River Falls ahead 57-56.  WHITEWATER responded holding the lead for a couple of minutes but Brady Hannigan hit another three-pointer and River Falls led, 62-61, with five minutes remaining.   WHITEWATER would take the lead again but couldn't put the Falcon away.  Jake Voeltz made a layup to give River Falls their final lead 66-65 with 1:25 on the clock.  A Myles McKay jumper put the WARHAWKS back on top and McKay later made a pair of free throws to make it a three point difference.  A Kori Vernon free throw to end game made the final 72-68.

River Falls didn't shoot that well, 39.3%, but went 7-19 from beyond the arch.  The WARHAWKS shot 50% from the floor, 5-9 three-pointers.  There were a total of 30 ties and lead changes in the game.  WHITEWATER'S 10-0 run to start the game was the largest lead of the game.  Free throws were a factor as WHITEWATER was 19-28 and River Falls 13-16.

Myles McKay led the leading scorer in the game with 29 points and tied for a team high 6 rebounds.  McKay finishes the regular season as the leading scorer in the WIAC.  Chris Vines put down 11 points and pulled down 5 rebounds in extended playing time.  Billy Kolinski and Matt Goodwin each had 6 rebounds and Kori Vernon finished with 5.  Phil Negri led the team with 4 assists.

Jontae Koonkaew led River Falls with 19 points.  Koonkaew also had 4 assists.  Jake Voeltz scored 11 points and he and Steve Farmer led with 5 rebounds apiece.

The two teams meet again Tuesday.

Sounds like a wild end to the season.

Someone asked about Koebl being suspended for our final game.  He had a confrontation with one of the officials earlier in the first half, before the botched call, and I think he was officially warned.  I'm guessing the suspension either related to that, or to his angry protest of the reversal.  Neither event resulted in a t for him.

Re: how did Oshkosh lose to Superior at the end of last year. Superior won twice and then took Whitewater to overtime. They were a different team last year OR nobody was ready for them. Maybe a combination. Everybody was ready for them this year and we couldn't sustain offense or defense.

On the up side, Saturday's game--if it had no other up side--saw a very nice distribution of points. Five players in double-figures; that's a good start. Too bad it came at the end of our season.

It's too bad Oshkosh can't get a quality and experienced official like this to work the clock for its home games, maybe if they did they wouldn't have so much trouble with their score keepers in the future.
