WIAC men & women go 6-0 in round #1.  Only one of the teams (Point women) had a home game.  Some tough ones tomorrow though.

Can't wait to read badgerwarhawk's re-cap of the WW-Elm game, considering his personal involvement in the game.   :)

If this isn't the greatest set of second round games one Sectional has ever had, I don't know what is.  For the WIAC to advance three would mean they would have beaten #1, #2 and #3 all on the same night.

The Elmhurst broadcaster was very confident that Wheaton would "roll" through their regional. I don't know how you could be confident about anything in this Sectional.

To expect Wheaton to "roll" through was a bit much.  He may have been a bit 'punch-drunk' since the Elmhurst regional alone was tougher than any sectional outside of the "bracket of death".

The main D 3 page used the word preposterous to define the Bracket of Death- definition: completely contrary to common sense, absurd, senseless. Any others someone wants to add? Don't forget to comment on .."Elms 26-1 losing in  the first round after not playing any strong team on the way to that "impressive" record...

Who the heck is Elms and how did they survive the dutch epidemic?  ;)

It was an incredible game from the opening tip off to the OT buzzer.  The first 15 minutes saw 6 ties and 8 lead changes.  During that stretch Elmhurst's largest lead was six and the WARHAWKS' was three on a McKay three-pointer that opened the scoring.  McKay was incredible. Elmhurst seemed unable to match up with him and took the defender off the dribble time and time again.  With about 5 minutes remaining McKay stole the ball and scored on a break away dunk that put the WARHAWKS on top for the remainder of the half and the lead was expanded to eight, 46-38, when it ended.   WHITEWATER built the lead to a game high 11 points in the second half and stayed in front for the first twelve minutes but Elmhurst came storming back and recaptured the lead, 66-65, at the eight minute mark.  After that there were 3 ties and 4 lead changes.  Elmhurst led by two points, 74-72, when Matt Goodwin made his only basket of the game to force the tie and a solid defensive effort in the last five seconds forced Elmhurst to shoot an off balance three-pointer which missed and sent the game to overtime.  WHITEWATER scored first in the overtime on a Kori Vernon layup.  Elmhurst went back on top with three minutes remaining.  But the WARHAWKS went back on top after a pair of free throws by Tyson Kingsby and after Elmhurst went ahead with a pair of free throws Kingsby made another pair and put WHITEWATER back in the lead, 80-79, with just over a minute to play.  After McKay blocked a layup Kingsby was fouled again.  He made one of the pair to put us up by two with 1:14 to go.  Elmhurst missed a three pointer but stuffed a lay up attempt by Kingsby and had the final possession with 17 seconds to go.  Once again the WARHAWK defense rose to the occassion forcing an off balance three point prayer which missed the mark and ended the game.

McKay was controlled in the second half so whatever the Elmhurst coach said his players during the intermission was taken to heart.  But he was unbelievable in the first half.

Kori Vernon picked up two quick fouls and only played a minute and fifty-five seconds of the first half.  He ended up playing only 19 minutes in the game.  Dustin Mitchell and Chris Vines played some really good minutes off the bench replacing the foul plagued  Vernon.  The pair finished with 26 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.  Goodwin wasn't scoring but he did have four assists, a block and a steal.  Kingsby went 6-8 from the free throw line and was a deciding factor down the stretch.

Brent Rusch was a monster for Elmhurst.  He was big and broad and a load in the low post.  Once they got the ball to him he just backed down his defender and powered the ball up to the basket.

Wash U looked pretty good.  Lawrence had a chance but their player took the ball coast to coast and short armed the layup that would have tied that game and sent it into overtime.

It should be a heck of game tonight.  I'm already hoarse.

I drove all the way to Morango and then realized I'd forgotten my tickets in WHITEWATERDoh!  Fortunately some were still available at the gate.

D 3 is a contrived tournament to permit teams like Elms and any other type school get some press- It is not designed to pit the best teams against the best teams in the nation. Far from it. The intent of the Bracket of Death is so obvious it kind of makes a mockery of the whole D 3 process, and who suffers? Quality players from high quality programs who put their heart and soul in to playing at non-scholarship schools and they get shafted by some totally biased and self-interested committee members who want all unknowns to have a shot at the title. SPoint, ST, WW and PL all in the same bracket. Where is D 1 fairness seeding when you need it?

BW,

I posted this, and for some reason it didn't post  But my emphasis was on the student section and their behavior..

Greek Tragedy

ESPN was on and were talking about D1 tourney and projections..."The top 4 seeds have to be the 4 best teams in the nation..."

If only D3 was that fortunate.  I'm not saying Platteville, Point and Whitewater are three of the best four, but splitting them up would be nice!

I'd sacrifice a "close proximity" game to send someone to the East or Great Lakes (or even the South) if that meant increasing their chances of seeing them in Salem or at least making it to the 2nd weekend.  There is a good possibility that all three WIAC teams will be making tee times on Sunday, and it's not because they choked...
