Are the WW wheelchair guys all disabled or are they just required to play in wheelchairs?  How is this sanctioned and what type of surface do they play on--rubber, wood, etc.?  What is a foul and what is an unfortunate accident in this sport?

Did Illinois get $$ from the sanctioning body to fly to WW or did they have to take a bus since it was under 500 miles from Champaign?  Or do they just hitch them on the back of semi trucks and let them ride up for free  ;D

Kind of cool for Whitewater, almost as good as dime taps at Mitchells.  8)

The National Wheelchair Basketball Association is the sanctioning body for collegiate wheelchair basketball.   All of the athletes are disabled.  To be eligible they must have an irreversable lower extremity disability which consistantly interferes with functional mobility.  They play on a regular basketball floor.  Our wheelchair players play in either the main gym which is wood or in the fieldhouse which is rubber.  The floor must be at least 84 feet in length and 50 feet in width.  The main body of rules are those of the NCAA though some NBA rules apply and there are modifications because of the use of wheelchairs.  Interestingly there are no divisions in collegiate wheelchair basketball so small schools play large ones and UW-WHITEWATER is a national power.

My daughter once traveled to South Carolina where she was introduced to a young boy, 9 years old, who was wheelchair bound.  She was wearing a UW-WHITEWATER sweat shirt at the time and when the boysaw it he got really excited.  He knew all about WHITEWATER'S program and wanted to come to school here after he graduated from high school.

A couple years ago a few members of the WW wheelchair team came to Platteville and played against a few of our student athletes and coaches.  They were amazing.  The player that was featured in the Nike ad was draining 25 footers like they were free throws.  Picture yourself sitting on a chair shooting 3 pointers using only your arms.

Well, it's the main page of D3hoops.com -- you should always go to it. Don't you like to get the news?  :-\

Pat:

The folks in the "news" business lately have really dragged us down.  Thank god for D3 Hoops.  An oasis in the desert.   :)

A couple of years ago one of wheelchair basketball players took on Michael Jordan and beat him one on one.  Michael wasn't that good in a wheelchair.  ;D

These kids really are an inspiration.

I have not in the past ... guess I'm going to have to start ... my apologies for not being better educated!

In order to get to the message board, d3boards, you usually go to d3hoops.com and then go to the "post" link at the top, right?  Or, do you just have the d3boards.com link saved as a favorite?  I guess I don't understand how you don't go to the front page first.

I wasn't trying to insult you, whether you are new to this or not.  But, a lot of posters fail to realize what a great informational site this is and just treat it as a message board.  And I'll disagree with you, I don't think it's that tough at all for newcomers, IMHO.
For what its worth ... I go straight to the d3boards.com ... I wasn't offended and didn't mean to seriously sound that way either!

On that last point we'll agree to disagree!
I'm also apt to go straight to d3boards.com and find it rather difficult to navigate to the mainpage of d3hoops as the banners up above tend to disappear and pop up with other random things (such as the d3hoops on facebook thinger).

simple solution.  Go to d3hoops first and if you want to go to the message board, go to the post up link...

even simpler, i'll keep my favorite pointing to the only board that I care to read and the admins would make sure there is always a persistent link somewhere on every page of the boards directing us to d3hoops.com or d3football.com  --there are right now, but I don't trust it to remain that way forever.

I thought you skipped the front page of D3hoops.com because we deign to cover women's basketball.

There's a link for Posting Up above the scroll at all times, above the masthead for D3hoops.com. Don't let that be your excuse.

True.  it takes 5-10 seconds out of my life to figure out if the paragraph i'm reading deals with a sport i'm interested in (men's basketball), or one I'm not generally interested in (women's basketball).  I could be the only one who feels this way, but I doubt it.

I definitely do appreciate the links as they are now listed up top as "the network"   quite handy.

Marinette's Ben Kitkowski, Oshkosh West's Paul Wojahn and Appleton North's Sam Mageland have decided to attend UW-Oshkosh and play basketball for the Titans.

Kitkowski, Wojahn and Mageland join Wisconsin Dells point guard Jade Royston as members of the Titans' impressive 2009-10 recruiting class.

Kitkowski, a 6-4 wing guard, averaged 21.2 points per game and earned first-team all-Bay Conference honors as the Marines finished 5-16.

Wojahn, a 6-6 wing forward, averaged 11.8 ppg and earned second-team all-Fox Valley Association honors as the Wildcats went 14-8.

Mageland, a 5-10 point guard, averaged 12.5 ppg and received second-team all-Fox Valley Association laurels for a North squad that went 2-19.

Wojahn is currently ranked No. 24 and Kitkowski No. 25 on the list of the top 50 seniors in Wisconsin by Wishoops.net.

A couple of letters to the editor have been published recently, and then there's this column today in the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, suggesting UWEC should name the basketball court after coach Ken Anderson...

  http://www.leadertelegram.com/story-sports.asp?id=BJHRBVSRJ18

What do you guys think? He was, in his 27 years as a coach in EC, one of the nation's all-time winningest coaches in all of college basketball, with a .806 winning percentage (631-152).

But in your minds would he, for this honor, have had to have won NCAA titles like Bo Ryan and Jack Bennett did?

Just curious what you all would think???

Just Bill

It would have been really hard for Ken Anderson to win NCAA titles, since UWEC was playing in the NAIA during the vast majority of his career.

Dick Bennett never won a national title for UWSP, although they were NAIA runner-ups once, and he was honored with Jack, FWIW.
