Ever wonder where players from the past go? How about Jon Krull from UWSP?

Spartans open with last-second victory  -  Saturday May 9th, 2009
Anthony Johnson threw for three touchdowns, ran for another and Jon Vojta kicked the game-winning field goal with less than five seconds left Saturday, lifting the Spartans to a 38-35 victory over the Northern Wisconsin Wolverines in the season opener.

Jon Krull, a former UWSP basketball star, was on the receiving end of two of those touchdown passes and Frank Minervini caught the first touchdown in Spartan history. Kevin Thompson added a rushing touchdown.

The Spartans hit the road next week to take on the Fox Valley Force in Appleton, they will be back home on May 30th as they face the U.P. Arctic Blast at Stiehm Stadium.

In response to Brian Carroll: Viterbo could win because Stout plays typically plays so inconsistent throughout the course of a season. However, Stout has Enerson-Matthews and Thomas coming back as well as some other role players. They are plenty good enough to beat Viterbo. Viterbo's recruiting class isn't great and I would probably take Thomas over Buschman in the post anyday. When Stout has a good chance to beat someone, that "someone" is probably a cupcake like Viterbo....

Anyways, I agree with wiz, I still like Will Ryan until they release the name for sure. Although that was a really interesting story in the Dubuque paper. Great find palum! Unless the Dubuque paper is getting there information from Stoutguy, it sounds like its a done deal!

The Dubuque paper would do well to check with me regarding upcoming news as I told about their upcoming football star coming this year way last year.  It's true.  Just ask Badgerwarhawk. 8)

Congrats to Oshkosh SID Kennan Timm for receiving the Warren Berg award from COSIDA.

Philosophical question: When an SID gets an award, does he have to write his own press release?

Beat me to it WizKid...

Jeff Gard has officially been named the next Head Men's Basketball Coach at UWP.

Question for Pioneer fans.... Are you happy with the decision to hire Jeff Gard?

Personally, I thought that Lance Randall and Will Ryan would have been better hires for the school.

Not Lance Randall ... some college assistant coaching experience ... but nothing longer than a couple of years ... success at Oshkosh West ... but given the lineup they strutted out wasn't too difficult.  He's moved around quite a bit recently ... if I'm Cedarburg I might be getting nervous!

I was pleased with all the finalists, Coach Gard has the ability to have a smooth transition given his experience in the program.  I thought Will Ryan would of had the inside track but part of me wondered why he would want the job. I went ot work for my dad after school and following in you fathers foot steps is not as easy as some think.  If you suceed dad gets all the credit, if you fail its all your fault.  Good luck Coach Gard.

Even with Will Ryan's bloodlines and PR potential, the fact remains that he's just 30 years old, has never been a head coach and hasn't really even been an assistant that long.  If it wasn't a WIAC school, but another similar upper level D-III team, I doubt know if he even gets an interview.

Gard is the safe choice.  He provides continuity and hopefully sustainability.

It really depends on your evaluation of where UWP is currently.  Are they perenial WIAC and national championship contenders ... if so then an argument for Gard is pretty strong.

If you deem their recent success as due to the Skemp, Lohoff et al ... how much of their recruiting and development do you credit to Gard ... if it is significant then Gard is a good choice.

These are things I don't know and UWP's administration would know!

I just think recruiting to Platteville has got to be a tough thing ... it is in the middle of no where, it is one of the least populous areas of the state and there are no population centers close by (Dubuque doesn't count).

Sometimes it takes some out-of-the-box thinking and change to sustain progress.  In that regard I would have go after Will Ryan.

I think Gard is a curious choice. He's never been a head coach before - this has to be the first time in a long time that UWP has hired someone with no head coaching experience. I was always told that Todd Adrian was pretty much responsible for the recruits that have led to their success the last few seasons, and that Gard was the hard worker that got things done but did not have as big of a role. I thought that Adrian was the safe choice - he's been a head coach with success (although it is in an inferior conference). It will be interesting to see how Gard does. And I agree with wcbsas - recruiting to UWP has got to be very tough. Tradition only goes so far - and the kids today don;t care much for history.
