Lance Randall will be named the new assistant

Still no schedule though.

At this point, we can probably piece the schedule together by looking at other teams... but I can surmise from a season ticket brochure that Point will have home games on 11/21 against Wisc Lutheran and 12/29 against St. Thomas.  This is in conflict with Frodotwo's post that stated Point was playing out in Tacoma.  Wisc Lutheran doesn't have their schedule up either, but both Whitworth and UPS have Point on the schedule... so it looks like the trip to the Northwest is on.  That's just a few short days after a trip to Collegeville, MN to play St. John's and is followed by a trip to Madison to play in the Edgedome @ Edgewood.

First home game isn't until the Dec 2 conference opener against Stout, and then two MORE away games at RF and at WW.  That's 6/7 on the road and two of the four longer conference road trips right off the bat.  If the St. Thomas game happens on 12/29, then that would be 2 non-con home games (Elmhurst would be the other on 12/12)... and potentially still having Wisc Lutheran coming to central WI at some point too.  That would be 23 games... I think that's the limit for teams with a conference tournament.  No NAIA teams are in that list, which is a potential addition if 23 ISN'T the max... Never mind, I checked last year's schedule and there were 25 reg season games, plus the conf tournament.

Throw Viterbo in there... Point's played Coach Wagner's V-Hawks every year in recent memory.  No Carroll... they've posted their schedule on their website (not up here yet).  UST has the trip to Point on their schedule, so you can ink that one in too... just missing 1 other game then?

Point's schedule is now up: LINK

I was nearly right with my pontification yesterday...  Season starts with 6 of the first 8 games on the road and then 6 straight at home.  Two MIAC opponents, including St. Thomas, who knocked Point off last year.  In fact, 7 opponents (5/8 non-con) ended the year in the top 25.

Also, no Viterbo.  All non-con games are against DIII, in-region (at least administrative, in the case of Elmhurst).  And after Christmas, only two "long" trips... Superior and Platteville.

Another interesting point... 6 out of the 16 conference games are at 5:00, with one at 3:00.  The other 9 are at 7:00.  I don't remember there being so many early games in the past... though I do vaguely remember a discussion of a story about changes in game time earlier this year (couldn't find it though).

re: the Randall hire

Stevens Point Journal Story

It looks pretty good to me.  Coach Randall certainly knows how to win and he's got experience on many different levels.

My only issue about Randall has been his vagabond work history.

He was an assistant at U of St. Louis
Leaves to take over Oshkosh West (was there for 3 years)
Leaves to take a college assistant job at D1 Loyola of Chicago (was there for a year)
Returns to WI high school bball taking a job at Cedarburg (was there for a year)
Applied for and was a finalist for the UWP job
Accepts the lead assistant position at UWSP

If I was Cedarburg High School I would be upset.  I'm wondering if there is more "long term thinking" to this hiring?

Rico Burkett, former D2 Wayne State Coach was also a finalist for this job.  Frankly there was some very high calibar candidates for a D3 assistant's job!

I hear you with that... but...  "We've (my family) been searching for a place that would push me professionally and be a great fit to be the husband and father I want to be. We decided this is the league (Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) we wanted to be in."

He has three kids (6, 4, and 1) and had moved around quite a bit.  He may have gotten some... nudging... to settle down!

UWSP is one of the premier jobs in the conference, if not the state (or all of D-III at that).  Historically, top assistants have done quite well and Point is a great place to live and raise a family.

Everything you've said is true, PS, but let's take a look at his quote when he took the job at Cedarburg High School last year:

“I’m looking at this for the long haul,” Randall said of his new position. “I left a good high school job (Oshkosh West) to go back into college basketball, and it’s just not working for my kids and my family. Cedarburg approached me a couple of weeks ago and it just kind of happened fast. It was a good fit with the dean of students job. It’s a great town and a great location for us. It’s obviously a very charming place with excellent schools."

At this stage, I’m just better off as a head coach,” Randall said. “Personally, for my own personal enjoyment, that’s the way I would like it. Having my own program and having a balance for my family life are very important.”

I'm having a hard time taking his quotes at face value, but only time will tell.

You also notice Point only plays 24 games?  Maybe we can schedule Finlandia or Silver Lake.

Geez, then UWEC wouldn't be able to play Findlandia two or three times each season like it has in the past few years!  ;)

13wapiti

Yeah-UWEC plays Finlandia twice again this year as does UW-Osh, UW Superior gets 'em once.

hickory_cornhusker

Maybe they're trying to play everybody enough times so they can join the conference in men's basketball like they did in men's soccer.

At least we can find opponents in basketball!
